Is patrolling in still the best method? I thought there was a "stop" and then "attack" that was possibly better for ranged units, after a relatively recent patch/update, but I might be wrong. Would appreciate any help on the matter, cheers.
cool tips. Number 1 was new to me and seems super helpful. About tip 3 Stand ground: You can also hold the control-key and focus a unit with that. it works the same way and you don't have to switch stance. You can also shift-que your scouts away after a focus kill with control on vill for example. Got this tip from Survivalist.
It's content like this and guys like you SOTL, T90, Viper, that has helped this community grow and prosper. Thank you for the effort and amazing content. Will definitely use the scout patrol in front of my archers next time I play.
You don't have to use stand ground with melee anymore. Simply hold CTRL before right clicking. They will focus only on the specific unit you click to attack
Fantastic video, I overvalued the line stand ground formation for arbalest, literally had no idea how powerful staggered is! These uploads have been godlike lately, keep up the great work.
Wow man. I honestly regret not watching your videos BEFORE I started playing the game. I thought I had the combat figured out but I genuinely didn't know any of these tips and tricks. It's mind blowing the amount of tactics and strategies that go into this game. Thanks a lot for sharing them with us man. I really believe videos like these will make more people feel more comfortable when playing the game and it will grow even faster. Bless!
Holding alt while targeting to avoid firing at buildings deserves an honorable mention. A lot of beginners and even low elos with some experience don't know this. It's huge for raiding with archers - makes a big difference.
Can you explain this more? Does alt work with patrol so I can raid an enemy and walk through his base without targeting buildings, or does it only work if I specifically alt and right click an enemy unit?
Agreed, this should be mentioned as well. You can use it when raiding with melee units as well - you can just alt-click them in the middle of enemy base and don't risk accidentally targeting a TC or a farm. Btw it only works with right-click-targeting afaik.
Hera I have pro tip for you can control right click the spear or any other unit and the army will ignore everything else and just kill this unit. So you do not need to use stand grand anymore and snipe monks easily. This works for almost year now
Thanks for the video!! I've been watching a lot of AoE2 for the last couples years and also playing, but this is the first time I get such a detailed explanation about formations and fighting mechanics! This was really useful. Keep up the great content!
These are the video's we're looking for Hera, these tips videos are awesome and aren't widely available nor explained that well, a great follow up on the 5 tips for each unit type. How about 5 tips for siege or monks? Would be a great addition I believe.
haha, Hera apparently missed the introduction of ctrl click? you can do the point 3 without stand ground, just ctrl+rightclick the unit you want to target. was introduced a year ago or so. another fantastic video otherwise
Thanks bro! I was just wondering why my scout rush felt so clunky when trying to attack just one villager, as opposed with older versions of the game, stand ground solves this! Cheers from Mexico!
Anyone has tips for best usage of control groups and overall about selecting units? In early game it's easy to have control groups because you make like 4 scouts or 10 archers, but in late game when you producing units from dozens of buildings and they get scattered all over the map it becomes really difficult to even select a combination of units you want... And control groups becoming useless cause units die really fast and get replaced by new ones almost immediately...
Hi Hera. I've been playing Age of Empires ever since it came out. I was a 2.1k cba hero player on Voobly in 2015. I was not extraordinarily gifted but an excellent TG player. What I really don't understand is why you of all people do not happen to play 4v4 cba hero scenario, which requires a lot more skills, stamina, endurance and perseverance. Why isn't cba hero as popular a game as RM? I'd be more than happy to narrate your games. Playing cba hero all comes down to not only your skills and but more than that how much of a tg player you are. I know numerous top players play cba hero in order to learn how to be better in combat. As smurfs, of course :) I used to teach slam how to use his army more effectively while we were playing cba hero together. He was the only one to use his real nickname as he played hero with us.
Just something to mention, as theviper found out recently when teaching Grubby, patrol and attack move is no longer better than right clicking a melee attack command, when you right click the closest unit. The units will engage properly if you right click.
1:58 since i found this from the start as i was "looking for the function". for gamers, this is like when you push the attack key then target the ground behind the enemy to order your character to attack everything in it's way. Exists in every strategy game but AOE2 is indirect about it sadly
Hey Hera, thanks for the tips! Question: when an oppo uses the runner trick, what is the counter play? Manually retarget the clumps of your archers firing at the runners? Disengage? Curious what you would do in that scenario.
Yeah its interesting usually ill back off since he commited alot of actions to setting it up, or i would manually focus other units if its small number fights
This is truly one of your best videos and that’s saying something!! I was expecting some tips that are too advanced to even attempt. But some of them seem possible even at lower level, plus I’m proud to say I already knew #3 :)
Its pretty insane. My opponent tropped a castle to me yesterday, he had about 12 longbowmen and few a kinghts out, i patroll killed them so fast with my xbows. its powerful
@@HeraAgeofEmpires2 Can't believe I knew something Hera didn't. :D Ctrl trick is better for us low APM guys because after the (let's say) scouts kill the targeted unit they will continue to attack others, whereas with stand ground they will just stand around doing nothing.
Hey Hera! Can you maybe do an updated video about archer micro? I'm not really sure how to best micro crossbows running away vs knights now for instance. I generally walk and do target micro but it doesn't work perfectly with overkill and is sometimes tricky with getting the right hitbox. I know before people did some walk away + attack move micro but I see in a lot of video's that the way that works changed a few months ago. Is this still the best method and if so how does it work? In red bull I saw most strong players not using target micro so I guess they use some other trick!
hello, I want to know how to control mangonels when mangonel x1 vs mangonel x1. For example, if I see the guy shoot, should I move backward, or make horizontal shifting? which one can be effective?
That is awesome, can't wait. Just my 2 cents. Saracens is the best if you are playing on Arabia. You can just put 3 on wood and the rest on food in dark age. Then you FC really fast with the cheap market and mine/stone with the better market rates.
have you tried a stand ground staggered formation patrol with melee units? I think if your units start more spread out you might get a better "concave" than the opponent to borrow some starcraft terminology
tried it 50 v 50 champs, the difference didn't seem noticeable, random bumping seemed too variable, and for some reason blue "player 1" seemed to win regardless of how the 2 armies fought not sure if that's some sort of pathing thing for the "ai" player
This is legit one of the most useful guides on aoe2. Very rare that this type of stuff is covered in a practical way.
Hera's a beast!

I could not agree more
Couldn't have said it better myself. Amazing content!

How to form a staggered formation. How do we spread the units???
This content is gold. I can't believe we've never had videos with this kind of detail, but you do it. We want more!

Do you make use of speed bonus of formation? Viper used that a lot to chase army with archers.

When he says patrol into does he mean the patrol command next to guard, follow etc.
or does it just mean move onto with normal movement click ?
