Insta360 ONE RS Review - My First Impressions

  • The Insta360 One RS is like two cameras in one. The most exciting improvement is the larger 1/2" sensor in the 4k lens. But having two cameras has other benefits that I'll talk about in this video, as well as some drawbacks.

    Great review Jeff. I’m considering Insta360 One X2 to compliment my GoPro, especially as you mentioned during races. Based on your insight I don’t need the One RS, I’m happy and familiar with my GoPro. Thanks for this, very thorough!

    What a great video!! Really enjoyed the initial comparison. I watched another video comparing the two, and it seems like they had similar reactions to the video and audio quality. They investigated photos as well (I imagine you'll do it in your deep dive video), which seemed better on the Insta360, so I think it depends on how you plan to use it. I love my GoPro and your footage is always so amazing, it is hard to see moving away from it (at least for now). Thanks for the great video, as always, and providing fair opinions without bias. I've been looking forward to this one and am so excited to see more! Thanks, Jeff. 🙂👍

    Nice video Jeff! Thanks for sharing. I've had my finger on the trigger for the One RS. One issue I had with the original One R and GO2 is what you're seeing around the 8:26 mark. When you're in a forest with trees and a bright sky the branches of trees tend to "ghost" a bit while the stabilization tries to keep up. That drove me nuts! Unfortunately it still seems to be there (although better) on the One RS. Keep up the good work dude!

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yea, that ghosting still seems to be a problem. I suspect it’s something in the algorithm, but it’s way less of an issue with the GoPro.

    I LOVE the idea of the Insta360 One RS 4K Boost sensor or even the 1" senor, BUT, the GoPro10 still seems to excel in audio. Comparing the two videos from your video, I also liked the contrast of the GoPro just a bit more. Colors just seem to pop better with the GoPro... Great review, but looks like I'll still be saving my pennies (TH-cam ad revenue) for the GoPro10.

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, that’s about the only use case I can think of. But that’s going to take up extra space on your cards and hard drives, plus I think limits you in frame rates you can use. Fake pans never look quite as real as in-camera pans anyway where the perspective changes slightly.

    The 6k extra wide would be great for recording my son's basketball games with a set it and forget it approach. Do you think this would work well for this in an indoor gym?

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t see why not, provided there’s enough light. These action cameras tend to get quite grainy in low light.
      You’d catch more of the action to the sides, and then could ‘pan and scan’ in editing. Sounds like a good use for the 6k!

    • @ChristianElrod
      @ChristianElrod 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeffPelletier Is there a better camera for this specific need. I want to tripod it or magnetically attach it to the Gym wall center court and then just let it run. It needs to be able to record at least 1 hours non-stop.

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A GoPro could work as well, although they’ve been known to overheat. I’d recommend buying this one from a retailer with a good return policy so you can test it out once to see how it works.

    Honestly, I don't understand why someone doesn't try partnering with Apple for a camera like this. Iphones have had the best small factor videos for years and years. I can't even imagine the millions they spend in r&d and they're still so, so far behind.

    • @panzerswineflu
      @panzerswineflu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apple wouldn't partner and would make their own if they decided it was a market they wanted to go for, which i doubt they would

  • @dealerslicenseops

    I don't understand. How is this an "invisible" selfie stick? How does that work?

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  ปีที่แล้ว

      On a 360 camera, where image from the two lenses meet is where the selfie stick would normally be seen. It gives the appearance that there is not stick, although the shadow can still often be seen.

  • @danlovaj
    @danlovaj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The audio on the Insta360 is a no go for me. You can't adjust your grip at all, as it picks up on the movement and records a shuffling noise, like rubbing over the microphone. Terrible and useless for vlog style. There's a reason why there is always music overlayed in the Insta360 videos. GoPro has the much cleaner audio. My suspicion is the modularity of the Insta360 is picking up on that movement, as it requires a cage, and the vibration/noise is being transferred from the grip thru the cage into the internal mics.

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard this too in some of my tests, but I assumed it was the way I had the two cameras mounted side by side causing some kind of rubbing. But I think you’re right - it’s something with the modularity of it.

    Hahaha!
    No nd filter support for the insta360 rs 4k boost lens.
    Good luck shooting at 24fps with a shutter speed of 1/50 in daylight.
    Raising the shutter speed to balance the shot eliminates motion blur.
    Insta360 doesn't support this product well.

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a good point! The only challenge though IMO with using ND filters on an action camera is that it ruins the stabilization. In my experience, you need to shoot at 1/120 minimum on the GOPro for the stabilization to perform well.

    • @osbaldoalvarez6695
      @osbaldoalvarez6695 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeffPelletier I agree. I would like the option to use a nd filter.
      Also, they have nd filters for the previous model. Why not make them usable with the new model?
      And if the stabilization is bad with nd's, why not make a video.
      Show the world, Insta360
