    Hi Robert... Many thanks for your no-nonsense style: Much appreciated.
    Been a manual box guy all my driving days (50 years & counting) but have had to move to an auto box. (As my wife has back & Leg problems.)
    So, I now have a Volvo Xc90 V8.(2009) ...and I am loving it....super vehicle.
    Had a rad problem a week or so ago & installed a new rad: In doing so, I lost some 'oil' from the lines: The "oil" was that black I thought it had an engine oil cooler!
    There is no towing hitch on the car and as far as I can ascertain: It has been dealer maintained all its life (160,000kms = 100,000 miles) so it would appear to me that the previous owner was paying through the nose...Mmm? The ATF should not be in that state, I'm sure.
    So, a flush & change is urgently required.
    Handbook states the Fluid is to Volvo Spec JJ3309, capacity 7 litres.....How much am I looking to buy for a flush....14 litres? Seems rather "overkill" to me....
    BTW: Of the two lines: Which is the return? I imagine the lower hose?
    Again. Thanks for your experience in all these things "Volvo"....!!

      My guess would be that the transmission is failing. You can keep clean/good fluid in it and keep driving it until it finally implodes. When fluid gets hot it deteriorates the inside of the transmission quickly.

  • @Cars0666
    @Cars0666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is incredibly insightful. I just commented on your other video and this describes my situation pretty well. The car I'm looking at had a transmission line come off and it overheated. He immediately towed it and replaced the fluid but the CEL incorrect gear ratio won't go off. Otherwise it works fine. I think it may have burned the vehicle speed sensor because that code also shows but it's not going into limp mode. I'm puzzled.

    A lot of people say not to change the fluid because the clutch particles in the fluid have altered the viscosity and it'll fail faster if you put new fluid in, but I don't believe that. If the transmission is so close to failing that changing that fluid is what does it... you were going to need a new one very very very soon regardless. If it's only slightly worn... well that could be the difference between another 5,000 miles vs 50,000 miles out of a transmission.
    I buy most of my vehicles between 90-120k miles, and every. single. time. the fluid is brown and old. Sometimes it smells slightly burned, but often times it's just old. That being the case I ALWAYS flush the transmission thoroughly, typically replacing about 90% or more of the old fluid. Doing more than a drain and fill would require a lot of expensive specialty equipment I just don't have for my vehicles, so drain and fills are what I do. That being said I've never had a transmission fail on the 4 (all now over 130k) vehicles I've purchased.

    I just got my 2015 XC70 back from a Mercedez-trained mechanic, specializing in all European cars. The car is almost new, 34000miles, but I wanted to drain the trans fluid in addition to oil change while I knew no mechanic would recommend doing so at this mileage. However, he said the typical dealership-mechanic thing that it's lifetime, it's sealed, no bolts/screws, don't touch, but he also said he has the special pipe and flush machine etc. The conclusion I think was even at 100k miles, this guy wouldn't want to touch my trans fluid....now I will head elsewhere.

The other day when it was cold, it seemed not to be finding 1st or R as it barely moved, but then 30 seconds later it went into 1st and reversed as normal. Hi Robert, first of all, thank you very much for your videos, they are really great and have been very helpful for me. I live in Sweden and have a 1998 v70 AWD. It used to be a police car the first 6 or 7 years and I have had this car for 5 years now. The transmission oil is brown like in your 850 example. It has 211k miles on it and according to the service history that I have on the car it seems that the ATF fluid has never been replaced. I consulted a few mechanics on this and they adviced agains changing the AFT fluid if it has never been changed as changing it at this point could result in that the gearbox will slip and will not engage gears correctly. What is your opinion on this? Many thanks and all best.

    Hi Robert great video very informative as usual. I have a 1996 T5 Turbo with an auto transmission, that has been stood for most of 7-years with an ocassional start up & run round the block. I recently got it back on the road with the aim of it replacing my NA 850 manual, which is in need of some work. The transmission warning arrow came on as soon as I got it up to about 60. If I stop overnight and run it again the light goes out until I reach about 60 again. I have taken it to an auto transmission specialist & they tell me that it is "flaring" ( ithink that means slipping) between gear changes from 2nd to 3rd & 3rd to 4th. They tell me it could be number 1 shift solenoid or it could need a complete transmission overhaul. Have you had any experience of this problem & do you have any opinion on what the most likely cause is please I don't want to spend money on solenoid changes only to find it is the gearbox is shot. It drives really well with nice smooth changes up or down. cheers.

    new transmission fluids will certainly last the entire duration of the warranty, especially sealed transmissions. in fact my dodge automatic transmission fluid is good for 120k miles on a new vehicle, if it was a sealed maybe a bit longer. that is well past the warranty. though it is by no means a lifetime fluid- i had the service done at 154k miles, i was told the fluid was dirty but there was no troubling signs. had i not done it i bet the transmission would not have made it past 200k miles, and a new transmission would have totaled the vehicle.

    • @sienile
      @sienile 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those transmissions have drain and fill plugs. Depending on the model the fill plug may be deep inside a hole and require a special tool to remove and an adapter to attach a fill hose to. You should look for a factory service manual for your particular model for specifics because the procure can vary greatly.
      At my shop we recommend fluid and filter changes between 80-100k miles regardless of manufacturer. Never flush a transmission as it may damage the seals. (I know that part conflicted with Robert's advice, but I've seen far too many transmissions damaged from flushing.) If the fluid is burnt, do several fluid changes within just a few miles of use between them to get as much of the bad fluid out as possible.

    Filter Replacement? We have a 1995 Volvo 850 (no turbo), and the automatic transmission does not change from gear to gear as it should. We did a 3X fluid change as you advised, and this improved things for a few months, until now. Then a friend suggested we change the transmission filter. If there is one, where is it located and can the replacement be easily done? Also we discovered that the oil pan for transmission is not horizontal as in most other cars and not easily removed. So if the filter is inside the transmission, what can a DIY person do to replace it? Thanks again.

    An easy way to replace a lot of your transmission fluid is to just do a series of drains and fills. drain and fill, drive it a little bit, then drain and fill it again until the fluid you drain starts looking clean. you might waste some fluid doing it this way but it is the most DIY friendly way to do it.

    Robert let me pick you brain for a sec. Have a vehicle with about 240K original engine and trans. Drain and fill preformed after 180K with original fluids not sure if synthetic, Fluids inside was dark brown. After awhile the car stopped shifting into any gears. Dropped the pan and changed the filter and fluid with Valvoline Max Life. A year later the car wasnt getting power to wheels. Drained fluid it almost looked darker and had some metallic flakes. Dropped pan again changed filter and refilled with valvoline maxlife a synthetic fluid. transmission sounds like its engaging every time I select gears on auto trans. However still no power to wheels. Do you think its done for?

      @RobertDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @deelee3462
      @deelee3462 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a FWD Car. The Cv Boots are torn, It doesnt look like axle came out of the trans. When the front of the car is lifted the wheels will turn very slowly. It doesnt seem like it wants to roll in neutral or if it does it has much resistance. When lifted and in neutral the wheels do spin freely or atleast the fronts, rear wasnt checked, So calipers arnt sticking and brakes will stop the wheels when applied to the slowly rolling wheels jacked and in drive.

The symptom is that after a few minutes the car looses all gears completely. However before that everything works perfectly well.
