The minor screwup method you mentioned is exactly what we do in the professional voiceover studio. If I make a mistake I stop, go silent for a few seconds, then restart that sentence. It gives the editor a visual reference of where the mistake happens and also gives the editor a nice clean starting point.
Very relatable, thanks! I'm now at a point of filming 1 video in about one hour, but it used to be much longer. Since I film videos in English and English is not my first language, I actually find a bullet point script to be less efficient than a written out script. When it's just bullet points, I take much longer to get to the point and I make more mistakes in English. So having a written script works better for me.
Love these tips. Just a note: you can speed up workflow on your clips by not starting and stopping the actual recording. You can just leave a big pause gap. They're easy to find in the editing process. This saves a lot of hassle hitting the record button over and over again and getting re-situated.
Thanks for sharing, from a time savings standpoint, I understood that doing ONE take, even though some parts will be taken out is more efficient. My process is as follows: 1. Writing script 2. Shooting in one take (30min for a 8min final video..) [Guys.. I have A LOT of bloopers!] 3. Trimming: go through the whole 30min to cut bad scenes out 4. Real editing with animations and transitions
TimeFlies - Time Management mines pretty much the same thing except mines a little bit faster. Just based on the fact I’ve been teaching swim lessons for over 7 years so I pretty much know what I’m going to say anyways lol. I still have so many bloopers and many times where I’m just starting at the camera thinking about what to say
Swimology right.. but being a very good expert doesn’t mean you’re comfortable on front of a camera 😰🥴 but you get better with time that’s for sure.. thanks!
My process is pretty much the same. And I'm right there with you...I have sooooo many bloopers. It's amazing how hitting record can just mess up your ability to communicate in coherent sentences...lol.
I don't have scripts or do I talk much in my videos, which makes the process even more faster. Editing with sounds, music and graphics take more time than the filming itself. LOL
I got the idea of writing a script from one of your videos and it changed by my life!! Before, it will usually take 2 hrs to make a 10 min video. After I tried making a script, I can finish in less than an hour! Game changer indeed!
OhMyGosh your tip about 'filming in chunks' has just made me feel like I might ACTUALLY be able to film my 1st video. I have been SO stressed out (okay, I AM so stressed out) about filming that I am literally paralyzed by this fear. I'm gonna try this today. Thanks a mil for all your awesome videos, I really appreciate the work you do ❤️️
I was skeptical of filming in chunks but it worked amazingly and seriously cut my editing IN HALF!!!😅😮 Game changer!!! Thank you for this video and I appreciate you and your channel!❤️
Vanessa, a few months back, I desperately wanted this info and I asked you. So I waited for a response and a video. When I didn’t really get one soon after, I thought, ok I will have to figure this out by myself and maybe get a teleprompter because I really can’t seem to be able to memorise my script. Today you have made a video answering exactly what I needed to know. You did answer me through this video. Thank you so so so much!!!! Sooooo helpful. Thank you dear!! May God bless you. Another question if you’d ever like to answer. How do you keep yourself motivated to do videos when you’re feeling down. This is just a bonus question. You don’t have to answer this. Thank you again! This video is so helpful. Thanks again.❤️❤️❤️
HERE is a video summary of what I just learned from banessa's video! 1. Do not over script! Just use bullet points instead 2. Film your self line by line and do not be so hard on yourself when you mess up! You can just delete the clip instead of reatarting your entore video. 3. Invest in Camera equipment like a remote control to eliminate the hassle of re adjusting constantly. Love you content Vanessa! Thanks for sharing! Time to execute and stop watching videos! Hope that helps! :)
Bullet points are key!!! When I work with clients, they can riff with billet points but asking them to do a script takes FOREVER! Even with a teleprompter!
I've been on a big learning curve over this year as my channel has started to grow and I've been taking it a lot more serious. I have to massively thank you for your channel - you talk about ALL the things I'm going through now I'm trying to up my efficiency. Keep it up!
The "Filming in chunks" part was sooooo helpful! I was struggling with that for so long, i believe this can boost my efficiency more than 100 times, thx for sharing!
This is the best way to film!! i used this method to film my last two videos, & I will continues to use it. Very time efficient & also makes editing videos 100% more easier!!!
Have been pondering using bullet points instead of a script. Gotta just try it. Taking me 1 hr 20 min to film at the moment and with 30 min to set up it's a big time investment. Thanks for the tips!! The remote tip is gold!!🔥🔥❤❤
I normally dont comment on posts but girl you saved me lol. Ive been looking for a video like this for over a week now. It seems no one goes into depth about how to record! Whether a large clip is good or mini clips are better. Thank you!! I love your content.
Scripting can also take extra several hours. If the topic is technical or demands a common thread of what you say, then scripting everything may still be favourable. I realise that I need to upgrade some stuff. Cheers!
I 100% agree-> "If the topic is technical or demands a common thread of what you say, then scripting everything may still be favourable." I have a science and technology channel and I absolutely need to script so there is flow and so my message is super clear.
i just realized i was SERIOUSLY overscripting and decided to change the way I script yesterday. you're video is so reaffirming and i'm looking forward to improving my filming and video production ✨
I'm so glad I discovered entire manuscripts and filming chunks were hindering both to my recording process and my sanity. I tend to operate I'm an intro-body-outro clip style with the 'body' being split up if I find I talk a lot on one point and my recording time is almost up (PowerShot SX730HS goes for 30 mins/recording). Sometimes I'll leave a slip-up in or make a blooper for the end since a common phrase on my channel is "English is hard guys."
Thank you so much. For showing to me that I am not the only one making mistakes. And not able to get it right in the first go. Thank you for making it sound like we are human and the people who get it right in the first go have also gone through the phase when they didn't. 😀🙌
This video really helps Vanessa. I struggle with verbal fluency and word recall and 1st mistake I overscripted 2nd mistake I was filming in big chucks and the amount of times I had to re-record bc I messed up. I was recording for 6 whole hours yesterday. I even allowed myself to go there saying it’s bc of my verbal fluency problem thinking I wasn’t good enough now but I am good enough now I just need a better process. Thank you Vanessa
When you film everything in one take and mess up, you don't need to start all over again. You just resay the part you screwed up and continue. The mess up can be edited out in post. It's actually quite simple.
HOW do you replace video photo with slides on a Google video? HOW do you smudge light reflection off the wall to make the whole wall the color of the wall?
so true. my first how to video was fully scripted. and not only did it TAKE FOREVER, but it was so terrible i never put it out. love this video! 🙋🏻♀️ thank you for making it
This is so helpful. I've done the no script which hasn't been great. Great video! I’m starting to try the bullet points now too, I feel like it really helps. Still fairly new, so still working on different techniques. Chunking is a big help for me too.
As someone who can't resist winging it, the tip for a structure for the script (as opposed to a full script) is great. I find myself talking at the camera veering off all over the place, planning it out before turning the camera on is probably super obvious to most people but I'm sure will help me. Loved the chunking idea as well.
Great review, Vanessa. I do agree, I use PPT Mirror tool trick to convert slides into teleprompter software, then I deal with bullet point structure to avoid over-scripting, which is a definitive guide that keep me maintaining eye contact with the viewer and I don't read word, therefore my speech remains natural.

Awesome tips Vanessa! I remember my first couple videos took me like 12 hours to film, edit and finish, now I can do it in WAY less time haha! I also spent a lot of time fully doing a script, and now I save tons of time by simply following an outline I create and I speak a lot more free-flow now. I found I was feeling robotic early on too! Love your tips Vanessa, really important points you made! PS - would have watched and commented yesterday but we lost power for 2 days due to the hurricane passing through! Fast talking Vanessa! Thanks I learn a lot from you-- that I share along with my experience to spiritual and healer types who are just starting on TH-cam who I coach. I translate this into their language given my background as a yogini and meditation teacher.
I definitely overscript, which makes me more confortable. I rehearse though, before filming, and make adjustments... Which makes filming less longer. Works for me but I definitely wanna try not scripting as much.... We'll see how I feel about if for my next video...

Yeah, thoughts crystallize, and they're best recorded at the moments, when they do. I also record videos for my friends at the moments, when specific wording crystallizes in my mind, on how to say it to make them get it quickly.
You are amazing!👏👏👏I have the worst Adhd but I stay fully engaged to all of your videos and you have helpful answers to most of my questions. Thank you!
Best strategies clearly compared to any video I've seen. I will be starting my youtube channel this week. Thank you for being human and showing exactly what your struggles are. Keep up the good work.
Some great tips there as usual Vanessa. I would just say that I find it much quicker to film in one go. If I make a mistake I just start that bit again and edit it in post production. When I used to film in lots of clips it took forever to organise them in my editing suite, at least with one long clip its in order.
I filmed in chunks for the first time on Friday. The video was filmed in like, 20 minutes and i finished editing in about 30 minutes. It was great. I also used to overscript and then I wouldn't follow it that closely 😂 so now its more of an outline/bullets like yours
Thank you for this video. Especially about doing the video in chunks because I need to do this. I do mess up just like you shared. Appreciate you sharing that
the only thing I hate about youtube is waiting until the video is uploaded + processed and then fill out all the description and tags. Over time its just a non brainer.. :D besides that absolutely love the platform and creating content!
I’ve never done videos of myself. So haven’t scripted. But I do art videos. So have to set out colours and an idea of what I need to paint.. so it’s not necessarily scripted... but will use these tips if I ever do talking videos.
Vanessa seriously, you inspire so many people!!! I thought I was the only one who scrumble the words on the sentence and try it again lol I am defo doing the filming in chunks next time and hopefully it will save me lots of time in editing
Thanks for making this Vanessa. I am preparing for my first video and have struggling with script a lot. I wrote it word by word and have been thinking of how to shoot it. Thanks for sharing how you do it. It saves me a lot of mistakes and time.
Wow seriously pro-level information here Vanessa amazing job. I really enjoy your content and will definitely incorporate these gold nuggets into my TH-cam workflow.
I appreciate this video. I've been getting so discouraged because I've been making videos for years, and still have to edit out so many mistakes. I have a hard time not comparing myself to other youtubers who can just talk fluently all in one take, with little to no edits. We can't all do it that way I suppose.
Thank for sharing your tips on how you film. This have helped me a lot. ❤️ the tip on filming in chunks. That’s so much less stress. I am going to download the app that you mentioned too. 🙏
Sabrina & Alex it does take forever. It’s all about how good you want it. If you don’t care so much about the quality and care more for quantity then you can still edit them pretty well in under an hour and a half.
Hi Sabrina & Alex! Editing can take a while, but as you keep practicing it will get faster and faster because you'll become a lot more efficient at it! My first few videos took me like 12 hours it was so slow. But now my quality has improved a ton and it only takes me a couple of hours now to do a video! Keep going, you girls are doing great! ❤
Great video. On the point you make regarding having a remote, I use an Elgato HD60 S to stream the 1080p footage from my Sony A6000 into my PC via USB. I bring this footage into Open Broadcast Software (OBS) and then use an Elgato Stream Deck to control OBS such as starting/stopping recording, switching scenes so I can go from talking to the camera to having a presentation behind me, etc. It's super useful. No SD cards neither as the footage hits my Network Attached Storage (NAS) straight away over a gigabit ethernet connection. And I can control my lighting from the Stream Deck too, so I basically sit down, bring up a script (I use ClickUp), turn on my lights, hit record, do the thing, stop, turn off lights, upload footage :-)
I'm mainly doing tutorials, and I found it useful just keep recording one long clip as I'm using multicam for multiple angles. I do follow the bullet technique but pause between sections makes it dead easy to edit directly on the timeline.
These are some really great tips! It's interesting to hear your method of filming in chunks. I've got to give this a try. I normally film in one big bulk shot but I don't stop or start over if I mess up (and I mess up a lot...lol). I've just got really good at editing and I've learning not to do crazy things with my face when I screw up. I just pick a good point and continue that thought. I've really excited to try the "chunk" method. I have a remote I just don't use it for video so it's time to give it a try. Looking forward to part two!
I love how you included a clip of your 'mess ups', gives me a ton of confidence that my videos will get better!
Who else feels this way?
I love to keep my bloopers!

Yes, the bullet point script format is so helpful.
This video really helps Vanessa. I struggle with verbal fluency and word recall and

Vanessa Lau you’re very welcome. I can’t wait to hear more from you! 🙏
So informative! Thanks, I think this is a really good method to organizing your video stricture. And the button is a life saver!
Dylan Shaye yea I’m going to start doing this now
Vanessa seriously, you inspire so many people!!!
I thought I was the only one who scrumble the words on the sentence and try it again lol I am defo doing the filming in chunks next time and hopefully it will save me lots of time in editing
I appreciate your work vaneesa. I love the way you teach in your videos. It's fun and excitement. Thank you
Thanks for making this Vanessa. I am preparing for my first video and have struggling with script a lot. I wrote it word by word and have been thinking of how to shoot it. Thanks for sharing how you do it. It saves me a lot of mistakes and time.
Great tips. Thank you so much for being genuine and personable.
Wow seriously pro-level information here Vanessa amazing job. I really enjoy your content and will definitely incorporate these gold nuggets into my TH-cam workflow.
vanessa, this is pure GOLD
this helped thanks! I'm at the point of switching from 100% written script to bullet point script :)
I appreciate this video. I've been getting so discouraged because I've been making videos for years, and still have to edit out so many mistakes. I have a hard time not comparing myself to other youtubers who can just talk fluently all in one take, with little to no edits. We can't all do it that way I suppose.
Great advice about filming in chunks, Thank you! Hello From Buenos Aires
I'm about to try your method Vanessa, thanks for the tips!
This information is golden! Thank you so much for posting this!!!😍😍😍
Thank for sharing your tips on how you film. This have helped me a lot. ❤️ the tip on filming in chunks. That’s so much less stress. I am going to download the app that you mentioned too. 🙏
This video is so helpful, thank you for sharing... sending love from South Africa 🇿🇦
@@VanessaLau eyyyy south Africa!🇿🇦
🤜🏼🤍 Keeping it Real!!!!! Live it. This video is SO refreshing. You just described my bad awful habits. Thanks!
It seems like the editing takes foooorrrreever 💀💀💀🎃
Sabrina & Alex it does take forever. It’s all about how good you want it. If you don’t care so much about the quality and care more for quantity then you can still edit them pretty well in under an hour and a half.
@@Swimology thanks for the tip 😁
Sabrina & Alex you’re welcome
Hi Sabrina & Alex! Editing can take a while, but as you keep practicing it will get faster and faster because you'll become a lot more efficient at it! My first few videos took me like 12 hours it was so slow. But now my quality has improved a ton and it only takes me a couple of hours now to do a video! Keep going, you girls are doing great! ❤
@@TimRoseOfficial Hi friend 👋❤
This video is exactly what i need right now. Thank you Vanessa.
Vanessa you have SAVED MY LIFE. Ugh I have the habit of starting all over 😭
Great video. And I can control my lighting from the Stream Deck too, so I basically sit down, bring up a script (I use ClickUp), turn on my lights, hit record, do the thing, stop, turn off lights, upload footage :-)
love your videos, super informative and to the point, definitely the best channel on this topic out there, keep it up👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I am new to all these. TQSM Vanessa. Fantastic Tips! So glad I found you! God bless you!
I'm mainly doing tutorials, and I found it useful just keep recording one long clip as I'm using multicam for multiple angles. I do follow the bullet technique but pause between sections makes it dead easy to edit directly on the timeline.
Agreed!
Your videos truly never disappoint. Thanks for all the tips, you truly share what most people want to keep only to themselves
Thank you Vanessa! This is exactly what I was looking for. Starting my actual TH-cam channel. Love your content!!
These tips are very important to the new & prospective TH-camrs. More value as usual. Good job, Vanessa...
Paul Lusambo yea she doesn’t leave me with questions still at the end of her video. It’s like she’s making the videos just for me lol.
She is amazing coach..
This is very helpful. Thanks for sharing.
