“Upgrading” From Windows XP to Windows Neptune - Is It Possible?

Today we're going to explore if its possible to "upgrade" from XP to Neptune. Even though Neptune predates XP, its NT version number is higher. This makes Windows think that XP can be upgraded to Neptune. So is it actually possible? Let's find out!

There could be 2 reasons why this didn't work:
1. It is possible that you would need to upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP before upgrading to Neptune, as it was looking for a winnt folder instead of a Windows folder.
2. The upgrade probably doesn't work on Windows XP Home Edition to Microsoft Neptune, because Microsoft Neptune is based on Windows 2000 Professional, and for it to be upgraded you might need Windows XP Professional as opposed to XP Home.

Exactly, Neptune came after the NAshville beta i think? (or the Chicago?), and was abandoned and became Whistler -> XP

@Santosh T it was intended as a home operating system, but it used a Win2KPro base, and as far as windows 2000 is concerned it's a professional version

The thought of "upgrading" to a beta version of an OS is kinda hilarious to me. A very interesting experiment!
It's not that Neptune is a beta version, it's that Neptune is older than XP.

At 4:21 Neptune installer said it will do a clean install, so I am predicting that all the theme customization will be naught and all the icons will be gone because it will do a fresh install. Edit: Yup.

@XPCurrent iirc its because neptune setup's version number is 5.5.5111 but the os reports itself as 5.0.5111
You can do that with Windows XP too, IIRC
*What you forgot about:* The windows folder does not contain any personal data or settings nor registry hives. Since it was *just* removing the Windows folder (other than formatting the hard drive) it may keep all your data.
It wasn't just removing the Windows folder. The setup states that all files, subfolders, user accounts, applications, security and desktop settings would also be deleted. It specifically mentioned the My Documents folder as well.
after this upgrade to windows vista because technically vista can upgrade from xp which is 5.1, so it should upgrade from Neptune which is 5.5
Though the Windows Vista setup application might not be able to run under Neptune as some libraries, etc. that are present in XP may be missing from Neptune.

You should try multi-booting as many versions of Windows as you can on one PC. (If you like this suggestion, you can pick any PC you want do do this on!)

You really need a compact flash or SD2IDE solution in the $5 Windows PC®️. That would allow you to easily swap between OSes and load files from your modem PC on them.
try running tweakNT after installing neptune to remove the timebomb.

You should try to install that Neptune to WINNT folder, then boot to any windows installer CD (to access command prompt) and move everything from WINNT to WINDOWS through cmd
I used in the past for such installations without bootable discs simply a ms dos 6 or a windows boot diskette (can be created in windows 98) to bootup into prompt with loaded cd rom driver. Then you could change to cd rom drive in the prompt and type simply setup to start windows installation.
fun fact: when you insert the cd into Neptune, it'll ask you if you want to upgrade Neptune to Neptune, the only thing I can tell is, it's some sort of setup bug, or, while the cd is 5.5.5111, once installed the files are 5.0.xxxx (or 5.5.xxxx less than 5111, I don't know), so the disc recognizes that, and wants to "upgrade" to Neptune, even though winver states 5.5.5111, that maybe only a text change on the window, and the internal files are like windows 2000 5.0.5111 or something
do you think you could edit a windows ISO to change the NT version on a modern windows disc? like from win10 to win8.1?

3. Then Install Neptune

I challenge you to downgrade a fresh copy of something like Windows Vista to an older version (which in Vista's case is probably something like Windows XP or Neptune)
14:38 you are booting Windows XP but using the older Neptune boot loader, so the booting process may look like this
if you install the boot loader of XP, it might boot
I am pretty sure you already knew this but the installation folder does not have to be renamed if you upgrade from Windows 2000
I did this prior to this video.
I had downloaded a copy from winworld Windows 2000 service pack 4 and upgraded to Windows XP RTM
how I did it is that I burned Windows 2000 to a CD from a different computer and installed it on a Toshiba laptop and I had the ISO file of Windows XP RTM I had then extracted the ISO file to run the installation of Windows XP and of course during setup there was the option to a fresh install or an upgrade

I actually have upgraded it before. Don’t remember how I did it. But I remember it worked properly expect for the XP programs not running on Neptune

can you rename the windows folder as winnt before allowing the upgrade to proceed or pull the upgrade files off an xp upgrade disc and merge it with the iso?

can you merge the xp driver folder in the neptune install media and disable the time limit.

Michael, how did you get the original copy of Neptune from Microsoft?
What if its because you used XP home editition. Because you think about there wasn't an home edition before XP and the betas after Xp were always the professional edition.
Seems you glossed over the first screen of the setup wizard that told you it will be doing a clean install. You should try booting the Windows XP CD and run the fixmbr and fixboot commands and see if you can get XP and Neptune dual boot off of the same partition.

(run the exe that you would normally update ex: from service pack 1 to service pack 2)

Maybe you can try using a winnt os and upgrade it to windows xp so it uses winnt as windows directory and you can maybe(it is only a idea ) you can upgrade to neptune from the winnt cd
On the 98 pc you should try a quintuple boot setup with 98, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7
You could have used the original disk.. when it asks where you want to install windows ya tell it windows01 and ya end up with 2 installs a windows folder and a windows01 folder and at start up ya get to choose from either 1
how about
from win2k > winxp > neptune
so it will use WINNT in windows xp since its an upgrade from windows 2000 that still uses winnt folder like win2k or winnt 4.5

Is it possible that you should've copied all install files while still in XP? That should skip the blue screen install and jump straight to the GUI IIRC

How Did The Kernel Of The Computer Corrupt Whilst Installation?
I myself 'm trying to run windows nt 3.1 on a pc which was installed on a vm. I sucessfully installed nt 3.1 to a vm and cloned the vdi to a regular file, of course not at beginning of the vdi file but where mbr inside vdi is. You can use WinHex or some other tool. Then i restored the captured part to the target pc... a pentium 4 1.8ghz with 768mb of ram and 80gb of hdd... and sadly it doesnt work. Then completed the setup in the vm and restored to the pc and sp3 and restored... no joy. Then i installed Acronis os selector 5 to a mini partition and resized and moved the partition and Winnt 3.1 booted and checked the disk and booted ok into nt 3.1. Then i logged in and there was some crashes and nt 3.1 works ok. But after a reboot... no longer works.
Windows All-in-one 2 set dvd you showed in a video has windows nt 3.1 but i guess it's an unpatched version.
Windows nt 3.1 upgrade saga isnt great in virtualbox because you need to delete the vm and reuse the vdi file with a new created vm for the target os to be installed.
Make an upgrade saga of all windows betas (chicago - neptune - longhorn)
would using these dev versions of windows mess up microsofts telemetry collection model
lets be honest, XP was all you needed in a computer. Sure, maybe a better 64 bit port, but if we just had XP for the rest of eternity with nothing but security patches we'd all still be good on it

I'd like to run Windows XP (live) from a USB.. but can't get it to work, presumably because XP doesn't have the USB drivers baked into the kernel, so while installing FROM a usb... and even ONTO a usb.. it ultimately won't BOOT from usb.
The XP source code was leaked long ago.. surprised no one has made a custom version. Perhaps modifying ReactOS or Niso Project (WinXP x86 SP3).
Neptune is an older OS than XP but it has a newer NT version, so does this count as an upgrade or a downgrade? (I don't know)
How about upgrade from Neptune (Build 5111) to Vista Beta 1 (Build 5112)?
Yo unrelated but I found a new web browser that works fully on Windows XP, Will work on 2000 with some kernel extensions & Full updates. It's called K-Meleon based off the Gecko engine. Huge classic look that I really enjoy. Hear it should work on 98 SE with KernelEx, but I wasn't able to get it launched on any 9x build. I personally tried ME as it said on their site thats the version they built it to be compatible with (with KernelEx)

But when that NT-based setup screen came up during the boot, oh my. I was in for a treat.
how about using the /unattend switch? it says you upgrade the OS with it

wow it tells me the same thing even under Windows 2000
since it does not prompt us whether to upgrade or to install a new copy,
so i guessed, no upgrades
