If you modify the config file to restrict it to VGA only you could probably resolve the graphical glitches at the expense of being stuck in 16-color mode. That first ME boot uses VGA and didn't have any glitches, they only appeared once the hardware detection was performed and the video driver was changed.
Exactly! I was hoping that someone would point that out!
@@SummonerArthur Wow
@@zoszane wow what?
VGA is weird to me because although there are 256 usable colours (yes, I am a Briton), only 16 can be used at a time.
@@QuantumScratcher You can use 256 colors simultaneously, but the resolution is low (320x200 standard, 320x240 with tricks and square pixels, 360x480 giving up on that and 400x600 with reduced refresh rate). Using Windows, even 3.11, below 640x480 is bad, and 16-colors even allow you to go up to 800x600 if you are willing to drop the refresh rate to 50Hz. It comes to no surprise that Windows favored higher resolutions over higher color gamut, since it wasn't exactly used much for multimedia those days.
Also, VGA has 262,144 colors from which those 16 or 256 are picked from. All these limitations are probably due to limitations in both memory size and RAMDAC capabilities.

@@trashplayerclicksubscribe9860 He edited it out.
Given how glitchy "Wiindows" 95 was for you, I’d be amazed if ME would work at all.
Now that I think about it, I’ve had strange mouse cursor issues similar to yours, but it happened when I attempted to install Windows 98 on a throwaway Compaq Proliant server. It would even produce Mainboard failure messages on bootup. But when I reverted it back to a dual boot of Windows 95 / NT4, the problems went away.
Maybe that system wasn't compatible with Win95? I mean it makes a bit of sense to me, newer PCs won't run a DOS-based OS at all, and a quick Google search tells me Win95 was dropped in 2001. Dual-booting with a newer OS may have fixed a compatibility error or something. I don't know too much about this stuff though, I'm just a teen with a hobby in retro gaming lol
The server I acquired originally had Windows 2000 on it, which was a bad choice on a Pentium Pro. I suspect it had NT4 before that, which was usually the optimal choice on such hardware (aside from perhaps OS/2 or Linux.) Neither 95 nor NT gave me any issues, and I never did figure out exactly why 98 gave it so much trouble.
he can just compile bochs for the wii and it will run better

What I’m curious about is if something like Mac OS 9 can run on the Wii, considering MacOS 9 runs on PowerPC, and the Wii runs on the PPC architecture as well.
Dr ROLFCOPTER! What I’m really curious about is if you can make it boot natively, and somehow find a way to flash a Mac OS ROM to the Wii, and turn your Wii into a retro Mac.
try qemu
@@Andrew982_ you can flash the storage chip
No you can't. Changing a system into a completely different system isn't as easy as just plopping a copy of os8 on it...
Would not be easily possible natively due to vast differences in the bootloader and system firmware as well as the way it addresses hardware amongst other things

*DosBox Corruptions*
Windows 9X is generally unstable and dependant on the driver you use, in DosBox its not the Wii itself, and 9X support is kinda "in beta" in Dosbox-X
@@camthesaxman3387 Sounds like the mess called PCSX2.
@@camthesaxman3387 PCem/86Box is the way to go for Win9x/2k.
Having said that, I did install Win 98 JP on DosBox-X (mostly to play older classic VNs) and it works just fine.
@@camthesaxman3387 Unless my throttle happy 4710HQ + 840M can be considered a monster PC, I couldn't see why most people with at least a half-decent PC couldn't use it.
@@camthesaxman3387 By the time you're going for those games, you might as well try to run it on your modern PC. SW Episode 1 Racer is on GOG, as is a lot of other 98-2k Windows Games, while the entire classic NFS games (except 1) have 3rash driver to make it run on modern systems, allowing modern resolutions and widescreen, as well as controller support.
Not all 9x were unstable. 98SE was super stable for example.

@Nicolas yeah exactly.
If the Wii has a PPC cpu why not installing Mac OS ?
Because MacOS is from Apple and is not compatible
@@AlvaroR04 The CPU is
@@AlvaroR04 They likely mean the older Mac OS' such as OS 9 that did run on PowerPC.
@@TheDemocrab Until Mac OS 10.5 PPC was supported so why not give it a try
That would be interesting to see.
I believe the artefacts are due to inaccuracies in the display emulation for Windows on DOSBox. DOSBox was actually forked into DOSBox-X specifically because of the Windows incompatibilities
Keep up the great work these videos are awesome thank you Mr.MJD
Glad you like them!
20:15 That's a Wii crash screen. DosBox itself has crashed, not Windows.
8:03 this is the first time I heard someone be excited about their screen turning black
This exact same thing happened to me when I first tried installing windows 95 in dosbox. I fixed it by changing the cpu type in the config file to 386.
I think the reason you got that error about MSDOS8 is because that's the version Windows ME ships with (it's not a stand-alone version of DOS). I think DOSBox tried to execute Windows using it's built-in version of DOS, which isn't compatible with DOS8, or at least Windows thinks it isn't.
Please keep making these longer videos
Bro nice reference in the video thumbnail xd
I was screaming at my computer Well watching this video. LOL, I installed windows millennium on a 25 MHz Tandy sensation (486sx). All you have to do is launch setup from a command prompt instead of just double clicking the executable.

You gotta admit, at 17:16 that is a pretty rare BSOD right here, because most Blue Screens you see are all the same with the difference being the error codes.

How do you get mouse drivers for the Wii? I have been trying. I have been trying to install windows 3.0 and I got it running, but unfortunately, the mouse doesn’t work unless i use the wiimote
if you want to fix problem with everything messed up, set color to 16, or have a modified s3 trio64 driver intended for dosbox, as i remember dosbox svn daum had it
Ah yes the days of my PC pain. I think I downgraded a week after upgrading to ME.
Oh wow Windows Me runs on the Wii just as well as an AMD Athlon back then. Amazing🤣!
You could have upgraded windows 95 to IE 5.5 or 98 to 6.0 latest direcX and then procced installing windows ME -You could also update windows media player to the latest since it installs media stuff
Seeing how common wiis are on flee markets im tempted to see if its possible to repurpose wiis into school/work budget pcs
Hearing Windows ME being installed on anything gives me PTSD.
The wii has to be one of my favorite consoles to mess with, I'm so happy I managed to get two of them from eBay for like 15€ + about the same in shipping about a year ago, one of them was even the gamecube backwards compatible model so I can play my totally legit gamecube backups on that thing through an SD card, they just play a lot better with a real GC controller instead of using an emulator
uh huh, "totally legit", sure
I hate it when people break into my house and only steal my video games.
did you install dosbox drivers? like VGA Drivers? there are DosBox Drviers for Video to make this look better and run better
Seeing these installations made me wonder if you have heard of 86box? its technically an emulator where you can pick from the first ibm pc over to virtual pc 2007.
When are you going. To do a face reveal?
Next video: installing windows XP on the Wii
Windows XP Is NT Based And Will Not Run ON Dos, But I Think It Can Run In Qemu Or Dosbox By Booting Into The ISO.
Those display issues are due to the limited cpu cycles dosbox has allocated and you can increase this amount with a shortcut although I forgot what it was
It could also be the drivers that are allowing higher colors and higher resolutions even tho the drivers dont work so it defaults to vga. I believe that since we have seen that it wont go higher than 480p but it is set to 256 colors. Going higher than 480p just shows a black screen. And so the fix would be to set the colors to 16.
This video is so MJD
Imagine calling installing windows ME a upgrade.
You sound like a text to speech voice

How I ran Windows 95 on my Wii was from booting a disk image of Windows 98 which was pre installed on the disk image. It was slow, but on my experience on Wii it did'int have any weird visual glitches, and I tried using it as a personal PC. That was'int a good idea. XD

@Henry Stickmin yea
Good video but how did you record the Wii in widescreen?
12:41 my main PC does this alot when I try to install certain Windows Longhorn builds on a small partition
Your so close to 100k !!!
This is actually amazing
Well, another MJD unique thing
Can't seem to enter the giveaway. Connection keeps timing out when I submit my details?
Wiindows. You missed an opportunity here man. Great video.
**Letting you know, if you search google search you can find video, sound drivers for dosbox for windows 95, windows 98 and me. They will improve the performance and fix all those black boxes !
also to make windows 95 windows 98 and me to run right, you will need to install MS-DOS and booting into MS-DOS before you install windows 95 or 98 or me
What if you create an image with ms-dos 7.1(china dos union has it free), so that you can boot from dosbox into ms-dos? After that, you can install ME or 95 on top of that from within actual ms-dos and see if it fixes some of the issues. have had some luck on baremetal using 7.1 as a base for installing 95/98
MS-DOS 8.00 was command and setup prompt in Windows ME
Have you tried changing the type of the emulated gpu in the dosbox config?
0:00
Smooth intro my guy.
Try changing the display adopter in dosbox config to fix display issues if not fixed try to change cpu type it will definitely fix at some point
I don’t hint dosbox is intended for like os like windows me. I think some clever home brew wii users can make the os in the wii to work so windows me or 95 or 98 98se etc works
hey maybe you could try a vintage version of macOS on the wii
Michael MJD Where do you buy the Windows Operating System?
I might consider doing this
mjd: my goals are beyond your understandings
you could change the dos version reported by dosbox by setver command.
would it be possible to run actual dos on the wii?
linux is possible, and that would remove all the issues with dos box, emulation. clock. ram. and it would be actually running on the wii
Everybody gansta until the Wii displays "Windows Millenium Edition"
It might be the Wii running out of ram? Iirc once installed me can boot with less ram thanks to virtual memory
How about getting a version of Mac OS between 1994 and 2006 on the Wii? The Wii uses the PowerPC architecture.
i was answer Visual Basic 1.0 went under the codename Project Thunder until its release for Windows at the Comdex/Windows World trade show in 1991. A version for DOS would follow in 1992.
0:52 it was "Interface Manager"
You should boot into safe mode and change the color depth to 16 colors. That should help...
i ran into the same graphical issues on DosBox when i changed from 16 color to 256 and above. When i changed the mouse pointer the mouse glitches out even more than the black box. And when i keep rightclicking the desktop i get garbage.
Edit: 1:20 Hey youre using 256 colors. Maybe thats causing the graphical issues, coz 256 colors caused it for me too on dosbox for windows.
That is how BootEasy (the freebsd bootloader) works. It uses F1 through F4 for the primary partitions and F5 for a second HDD. Hence why it only showed F1 and F5 (disk configured with 1 primary partition spanning the whole disk). As for how did you get that bootloader installed without it's respective OS. God knows.
Gonna be honest, I'm pretty sure that the wii screwed up both configuration files for dosbox on your wii and your PC, and i for one wanna know how and why it did it
You don't get graphical problems during the first stage installer because the first stage installer is secretly Windows 3.1.
