About weighted blankets: nobody-and *especially* not an infant-should be using a weighted blanket they cannot remove on their own. If they can’t get the blanket off of themselves, it’s too heavy for them.

Sounds like a useful metric. I've heard that front carriers (once kids can hold their heads up) that face forward provide a boost to brain development, since the baby is positioned to look around at things and see what Mommy is interacting with and therefore gets more stimulation and better guided experiences to learn from. Similar to how using baby sign language speeds brain development by making communication faster and easier before the mouth parts have caught up to the act (also, less frustration all around).

At least in the UK, sling libraries are a thing in many places. You can try different slings and borrow one that fits you and the baby. I don't know if they exist in other countries, but worth looking into.

Pro tip: most of the huge consignment sales like the Rhea ones have special rules and considerations for foster parents. Some let foster parents shop first and then also shop last through the donated pieces “left over”. Though it may seem crazy, oftentimes items like baby carriers are set to be donated. If you can do it, it’s totally, totally worth it every time.

I have a granddaughter due in a couple of months. She most likely be born with drugs in her system. We already have our first grandchild who was born addcted. I feel best if our soon to be granddaughter go to someone else. It wouldn't be fair to give them both the best chances of a normal life if I have to work with both. In a way I'm devastated feeling this way. I know a wonderful couple who have been through the foster care/adoption classes. They have experience with drug addicted newborns. I'm being told I can let CPS know about them after the baby is born but it most likely won't matter. They have no other children at this time. As everyone knows, the system sucks.

Is it possible to get into a “close family friend” situation with them? Like, the third line of defense: 2. Family 3. Friends? It might be a fair shot if you identify her as a solid “close family friend” who has the means, stability and would love to care for this baby.

@@mmorris284 that’s the heartbreaking part about so many of “these cases”- there isn’t a crystal ball to see how things are going to go. I think it’s worth it to see how the couple feels about it anyway- maybe they’re “up for the ride” or okay with being there for the baby as long as he/she needs them to be. Or, maybe it’s possible this couple would be willing to be there for you in a way that would allow you to keep the baby at least temporarily. Anyway, I’m rambling, but it’s totally worth the conversation with the couple to see how they feel re: the uncertainty.

Are there options to feed foster babies breast milk? Obviously fed is best, but is breast milk also an option for foster families?

I know Della Vlogs are using a donor breast milk for their adopted daughter. A lot of women choose to donate when they either have a huge over supply or have finished breast feeding their own babies. I’m not sure what the laws are regarding that with fostering but would always be worth checking.

Yes if there aren’t concerns for substances, often their mom can still breast feed at visits 💛

@@ericadavenport2039 I’m going into midwifery/lactation consulting, I know all about the downsides of formula. But even if a foster mom chooses to induce lactation, that will still take a while. I’m not sure why the exact rules are considering milk donation/pumped milk from bio mom for foster babies, that’s why I asked. It’s better to feed a foster baby formula than to not feed it anything at all.

What happens if a breastfed baby is taken into foster care? Is it possible for some moms to pump to give milk to the foster parent? I've heard that's especially good for kids with NAS because their mom's milk will have small amounts of the narcotic and allow them to wean off of it more gently.

So they expect newborn babies to sleep alone in a crib with no swaddle? That's honestly heart wrenching and completely unnatural. Imagine going from the womb to alone in a cold crib. The newborn startle reflex is so bad they wake themselves up constantly. That's why I swaddle if we're not cosleeping.

It says in the guidelines to use a sleeveless sleep sack because there is evidence swaddling coming loose can increase the likelihood of sids or swaddling too tight where they can’t move their legs can cause hip dysplasia and other issues long term
