This man has an incredible understanding of the human voice! We're listening to Marc Martel today perform what he has named The Mercurotti. Not only is he singing Nessun dorma, which is an incredibly difficult aria, but he's doing it in the styles of both Freddie Mercury and Luciano Pavarotti. Brace yourselves!

There was no training. Marc has never studied vocals. Goosebumps!
He is not really an imitator/impersonator. He is a musician with a superbly attuned ear and tremendous ability to encode acoustic information!

His origin is church. Choir singing. Just like Freddie. Also, he is not mimicking. He naturally sounds like Freddie, and he has the unique gift to let us hear him again. Which is why he's super famous.

He has absolutely practiced sounding & physically performing more like Freddie, although yes, he does naturally sound similar to Freddie in his normal voice. He's putting it on, though, too, when he's in character.

Both voices are impressive, but I have to say it's a treat to hear Marc in the lower registers, which he rarely uses. His range is naturally higher.

    • @papabearM3

Actually, Marc's range extends all the way to D2. I agree, it would be nice were he to use it more often live.

Marc is completely self-taught - in the way most contemporary singers just learn from listening and singing along with other recorded songs on the radio. Marc recorded a video a few years prior to this where he's only attempting the classical style, and at that time, he explained that he didn't feel comfortable singing the high note, so it's interesting to hear the progression as he ages and performs the song more. In my opinion, it seems like he's finding a "contemporary style" for this aria.

    • @TheClassicWorld
      @TheClassicWorld ปีที่แล้ว +8

Seems like genetic gift here. He has convinced me that a lot of singing is innate -- not in some strange way as might be the case for other areas of life, but in simply how your entire head/upper-body is created. Freddie was the same way. Very certain foundations in place, regardless of any training or otherwise. Michael Jackson is an interesting one. It seems to not have been quite as natural for him, and he worked almost every hour of every single day to get and stay at that level.; Freddie once remarked that he didn't like to train, ever, but when he met Michael, all he did was train. (Freddie found training, etc. very boring.)

Marc is yet another Canadian. Makes me proud to see how many surprise you (in a good way). Marc was also part of the Queen Extravaganza that toured from 2012 to 2016. I've seen him here in Ottawa and in Montreal. Fabulous singer, a natural mimic, and one hell of a vocal range very similar to Freddy. Thank you so much for these reactions and affirmations. Glad I stumbled across your channel. Cheers!

Marc is a natural mimic; he's said he learned to sing listening to songs on the radio. He had his own band for many years and had so many people say he sounded like Freddie, he decided he should listen to some Queen. After that he worked on it, adding mannerisms as well. He also has the ability to sound like several other singers and does a credible job with all of them!

Hi! I just found your channel not too long ago. I love your videos!
Marc is an incredible vocalist! I don't think I have ever seen him before.
I love how you're searching for a word to describe what Marc is doing. I know know how hard it can be to come up with the "correct" phrase on the fly. Some people might take imitate with negative connotations but oh well, one can't be perfect every time and one can't please everyone all the time.
The word that came to my mind right now was "emulate". I am definitely not trying to correct you. I just love wordplay and keeping my vocabulary sharp. And I love people that stop and try to think of the right word for the (I'm trying to think of one now:0) occasion at hand.

Thank you, Bethany 😊 Although this performance is miraculous, it's the 1st time I'm hearing Marc sing in two voices, I do prefer his classical translation of Nessun Dorma, a solemn one more in tune with the lyrics.
I guess it's because I'm older, and a bit fixed in my listening mode, often playing classical music.
Freddy Mercury's style is more agitated, or so it sounds to me. His body language was like a child's scream, to outrule the voice of adults, similar to the plea in the song of the WHO... "Feel me, hear me, see me, touch me..".
Freddy seemed to shout his life and love into the clouds, unique and powerful in his own way. More theatrical.
I do love low male voices, and I wonder if you could choose Byzantine monks' singing, with solo voices also in the choir, sharing your reaction. 👋🧙‍♀️

    Emulating?...to match or surpass
(a person or achievement), typically by imitation.
"lesser men trying to emulate his greatness"
that word perhaps.... and the vocal transition
perhaps compared to the stretching of a balloon
to get the higher more Freddie sound through the
    nasal cavity?
    Loved your reaction analysis... ;)

This is a video done on a whim by an artist who naturally sounds like Freddie. He intentionally goes back and forth to show the difference in style (Albeit, Marc has never studied singing and everything he does is intuitive, but not precise.) Since Freddie had never touched Nessun Dorma, there is nothing to emulate other than, perhaps, the style. And even that Marc does to explore how the song would sound (loosely) were Freddie to sing it.

  • @1980bwc

This is a perfect example of the existence of God, and Creation. So many people train and devote their entire lives, in the attempts of reaching this level of greatness, and never come close. Marc was never trained to be a opera singer. Nor did he train to sound like Freddie. He was born with these capabilities. There is nothing in the so-called "theory" of evolution, that can explain how things like this happen. Had we all evolved into who and what we are today, instead of being created, we'd all have the ability to do things like this.

As "That'llShowEm" mentioned, no lessons whatsoever. Marc describes himself as a natural mimic.
And, Marc doesn't imitate Freddie. That's 100% his natural voice. As he's said in interviews, all he does is add a "bit" of a British accent, to sound more like Freddie's pronunciation. Btw, the phrase is, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

This was originally posted around 2014-2016ish I think? (He reuploaded it a year or two ago cause I think it got deleted accidentally). So he definitely has had time to do more opera projects etc. In this though, he mentioned in interviews or Q&A’s that this was basically “mock” opera in a sense, just to have fun with it. He did get into an opera fix for a little bit, and did some songs with professional opera artists like Jonathan Cilia Faro who he did an EP with.
