I saw Queen live 4 times and had the great pleasure of meeting Freddie in person in 1977. He was shy and polite and extremely generous, with his time and also gave me some signed records and a patch that the tour crew had. He was a genius musical performer and also a gentleman who gets a lot of grief from people who didn`t get his lifestyle. The world lost such a lot when he passed and I`m not over it yet!
Wow damn. As a 2005 fan of Queen and Freddie mercury I feel sad I never had the chance to see him on live, it must had been INCREDIBLE, they were so talented
I’ve seen Freddie in concert once. Memorable doesn’t even cut it. What I’ve recently learned is Freddie’s death was caused by Dr Anthony Fauci. Look up HIV patent in the USA & Fauci’s injecting gay men in NYC against ‘Hep B’ but it was really HIV/Aids.
I saw them 3 times.. first one in Jan. 1978.. I was 17... and we got to meet the band briefly in a Holiday Inn lunch room.. Freddie was just as you described.. he signed autographs, and was basically very shy and sweet.. the rest of the band were also funny and Brian May even had the presence of mind to ask us when we asked for an autograph: "ought we to sign TWO?" -- and we were so dazzled, we had never even thought of that... lol.. YES, please?
The 80's were such a bigoted time in the U.S. for LGBT people. SMH

My biggest regret will always be being born too late to see Queen live and in all their glory. Freddie... good God that man can sing, and the charisma he brings on stage. He has such a commanding presence while looking completely effortless, yet you can see he is leaving nothing behind.

Possibly the top contender for the best live performance is Bobby Hatfield singing “Unchained Melody” in 1965 on the Andy Williams show. The video is on TH-cam. Check out his voice control and the incredible high notes he hits at the end.

Your right. Watching Queen live gave one a supernatural feeling. I knew I was seeing something I’d cherish forever. All four were talented and Freddie sang with such beauty and pranced with such charisma it was amazing 🤩 Freddie had 4 extra teeth, a massive jaw, 4 octave range, a faster than most singers vibrato, could use his false vocals to sing like Tuvan singers, double jointed fingers, a natural ear, excellent posture and oozed energy. It’s like he was created to be a rock star. All 4 members were so talented and professional!
Obviously he was created to be a sensational singer/ performer/songwriter/ genius!

Fun fact: this song was chosen in 2005 by one of the biggest global tv audiences to be the "greatest driving song of all time".
For the record: the pause in the beginning isn't Freddie 'resting his voice', it's him leaving room for the live audience to sing along, which they did, but the old school microphone just didn't pick it up, hence it feels like a pause.
And the song listens like an race engine running, revying up and down and changing gears. Also good to see Freddie playing the piano as it looks the cylinders of an engine up and down.
That's a great observation. When she spoke of his choice to take a breather there, it just didn't ring true for me. Your take makes more sense.
Queen live with Freddie Mercury was an awesome experience, I was fortunate to see them 4 times with Freddie, 2 of the shows I saw were at the Montréal Forum in November 1981 I was 16 yrs old what an experience it was & the shows were being filmed to be shown as a live concert movie to be shown in Theaters & in smaller markets where they were not able to play, ( this was just before MTV was around & Queen were huge at this time)
Anyway, the concert was eventually released as a live CD & DVD titled Queen Rocks Montréal, & of course I own both, I occasionally like to revisit that great experience & live show from my youth.😊

I was there both nights, tickets were stupidly cheap back then, then were around $20.00 a ticket.

When Freddie approached Brian and Roger when they were in Smile, he didn't change their lives, he changed the world. You bring up difficult songs, and mentioned "Bohemian Rhapsody" ... as so many people do. Brilliant as it is, and it is truly a masterpiece, it isn't even the best song on the album. If you really want to see some brilliant vocals by Freddie, listen to "The Prophet's Song" (from the other side of the record). It's Brian May's masterpiece, and features Freddie singing echoes with himself. Today it would be done with technology, but back then they had to string audio tape across the room passing through playback heads on separate tape decks. The fact they were even able to do this is beyond remarkable, but Freddie's vocal gymnastics are spectacular. They eventually were able to reproduce it on stage, using Echoplexs, to my understanding. Give us all a thrill and give it a review ... I'd like you see your take on it. Always great, just always, Bethany!! You are a ray of sunshine on gloomy days.

Agree with everything except Freddie approaching Brian & Roger when they were in Smile. Smile was Brian, Roger, and Tim Staffell on bass & lead vocals. Freddie was a friend/classmate of Tim's at the Ealing Art College in Lindon. All four shared a flat in London! Brian and Tim were friends from much earlier, meeting in 1964, and formed a band called 1984.Staffell left Smile to join Humpty Bong, and then later Morgan. While with Humpty Bong, Tim moved out, and just Brian, Roger, and Freddie shared the flat.
At this same time, Brian was in gradate school at Imperial College of London, and a Math instructor at the school. Freddie and Roger owned a second hand clothing shop in Kensington Square. Ruger was studying to be a dentist. Freddie sang in other bands: Ibex/Wreckage, (1969) which was a Liverpool based band, thus briefly Freddie move to Liverpool. Freddie returned to London joined Oxford based Sour Milk Sea in later that year, but the band broke up in early 1970.
As Freddie was again living with Brian and Roger, he tried to persuade them to return to music. Freddie finally convinced them to restart "Smile". The band changed bass players several times before John Deacon joined in 1971. At that time, they renamed this new band Queen - and honed their craft while still in school/working their other jobs.
Queen signed on with Trident Studios in 1971, but their debut album wasn't released until 1973. In the mean time, Trident hired Freddie as a solo artist, using the stage name "Larry Lurex", producing very heavily Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" singles. One final bit of trivia - Tim Staffell when on to become the Chief Model Maker for the children's show "Thomas the Tank Engine".
They also changed freddies life. Freddie would be nothing without Rogers drumming and backing vocals and Brian's guitar. They all contributed to songwriting too.

I've always loved this song since I was a kid, because it's so upbeat and happy; but it wasn't until I tried singing it for fun one day (at home, alone) that I realized just how difficult it really is 😂 Freddie just makes it look so easy and effortless ❤

The highest most impossible note ever reached in rock music is Freddie Mercury singing "Why?" above Bowie. He goes as high as a human can and then bends it higher when he should be completely out of air. It's beyond incredible.
The song is Under Pressure, just in case you (reactor) don't know. That note is crazy good. Nice to see it being mentioned.

This is s a great performance, Freddie is projecting all the emotion the song calls for. Roger is great on the backup vocals as well. I feel that the video quality is very good for the time and technology available. The lighting is responsible for the softer red tones. This is my go to song when I am in a funk and in need of an attitude adjustment, it really always elevates my mood every time. Thank you for your energetic and wonderful reaction. Freddie has an overbite but more he has overjet, his teeth are fanned out from the root due to a lack of space for all his extra teeth.
I love watching Queen play live, studio tracks just don’t show how amazing all the members of this band are. Somebody to Love, live in Montreal, in 1981 is a fantastic live video of theirs.
One thing I noticed, especially without a shirt on, I couldn't see him taking a breath and he's really pushing the words out and zipping up and down the scale, so amazing!

You mention Freddy's jaw position a few times - he actually had four extra incisors, which it why his front teeth protruded so much and undoubtedly affected the whole way he held his mouth. He was self conscious about it, but didn't want to fix it, in case it affected the way he sang.
He didn'thave four extra incisors as stated in the travesty of a film (I'm surprised that ex-dental student Roger Taylor let that one pass through!) He may, or may not, according to who you believe (Mick Rock or Peter 'Phoebe' Freestone) have had four extra molars (the rear grinding teeth, incisors are the front cutting teeth)

I saw them on this tour in New Haven CT and in 1978 and in 1981or 82. Had the privilege seeing Queen and Freddie Mercury in their best years. I graduated High school in 1979. So I got the privilege to see them back when I was 17 or 18. Absolutely amazing shows!! I want to go back! LOL.

BTW… In this video, near the beginning of the song when Fred stopped singing for several seconds while still playing piano… He had stopped singing because THE AUDIENCE WAS SINGING FOR HIM… The audio mix here is just poor/doesn’t pick up the sound of the audience.
FYI… There IS a fantastic quality, REMASTERED version of the video, where the uploader managed to “tweak” the audio levels so that we CAN hear the audience! (And the image quality is fantastic too, obv.)😻

Awesome song choice. One of my fav Queen songs. What a legend, you and Freddie. He's such a powerhouse and it is such a busy song although he breezes through it like its no big deal. I was going to ask if the new backdrops have a door and light switch option and it seems that they do. Thanks for doing this one. Queen were my first musical love, and still a staple of my playlists. Singing along to Queen songs is an excellent way to stretch your vocal talents too.
I'd say the live aid concert is a good recommendation because often his most spectacular vocals are part of the crowd work he does between songs. Either that, or Barcelona, with Montserrat Caballe.
In my unprofessional opinion, Freddie Mercury is the greatest singer to have ever to walked this earth and deserves all the respect that comes with that.

Got to see them do this live during The Hot Space tour in July of '82 at Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Freddie was simply awesome. Even our Indian Bollywood movie playback singers don't come close to him and we have some really good singers.

Queen is still one of my top 3 fav bands (to include Pink Floyd and Rush)! The Wembley Stadium show from 1986 is amazing (sadly, only experience ! However, I do maintain that the quintessential Queen live performance is their set from Live Aid in '85! They absolutely STOLE THE SHOW!!!!

Although now in this 21st century there is so much mystique surrounding Queen, and particularly Freddie's legendary status...We who were privileged to see Queen perform live, knew instinctively that we were witnessing inimitable greatness. I was so very fortunate to attend several of their concerts in different parts of the world in the mid 80's...This band were the perfect storm, and Freddie was the God with pockets full of fairy dust, who ensured each and every ticket holder experienced the absolute time of their lives. Dear Freddie showed us inside his heart...and we will love him forever for it.❤

I was actually at this concert. They were recording for their "Live Killers" album which probably explains why the recording quality is not awful (even after all these years).
This was after live killers was already released. This was their crazy tour at the end of 1979
@@stephenfrasure9351 You are correct. I did not notice that this was from the Hammersmith Odeon concert. It is so similar to the way Freddie performed the song in Paris earlier that year that I thought it was from that concert. Too many years have passed which makes it easier to not clearly remember everything. The Paris dates were at the end of February and the 1st of March 1979. I was at the February 27th concert that was one of the dates that was being recorded for "Live Killers". The video looked a little bit darker than I remembered but I figured that was because of the age of the video. Freddie sang the song the same as far as I remember which is not always the case from Queen tour to Queen tour.

Another remarkable voice is that of John Fogerty who was the singer for Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their first self-titled album was released August 1968, featuring one of the best vocals is,

In the space of a week I have watched 20 of your clips hundreds of times! I am a mega fan. The way you use language to describe voices, instruments & transitions is examplary! You listen to a wide variety of music which is great to capture new viewers. However I feel you are missing out on one of the greatest vocal performances of all time by not reacting to Queen's full set at Live Aid. It is widely considered to be the greatest live performance of all time and Freddie Mercury's voice from the first word "Mama" to his last syllable is flawless. Only Freddie can make the word 'go' last for 4 seconds and sound amazing! I know I'm new and I'm sure you have many requests. Take this one very seriously! Love you !
I grew up listening to Freddie, he was and I believe incomparable in his live performances ,in other words there's nothing else like him out there, just my opinion, they said he wouldn't get his teeth fixed because he was afraid it would affect his singing techniques, he was a special person

It takes time to appreciate greatness sometimes. I appreciate bands like Queen now where I didn't back in the day. He might still be alive if we understood and appreciated his greatness and communicated it to him more. You break down jaw placement and technical stuff I've not heard. You're pretty cool. There is a Philippine Girl Group called 4th Impact who do a cover video of Bohemian Rhapsody that respects Queen's arrangement and video. They've been reacted to by about 20 Online Vocal coaches who all have been wowed.
He died of AIDS. It would have taken medication which did not exist at the time to keep him from dying.

I love him. For me, despite the critics and fans saying Live Aid was their best, i always will go back to WEMBLEY!!!! It was just memorable and his performance ground braking, that opening with One Vision was epic!!!. Those thousands of people must have had the time of their lives! They won't forget it for the rest of their existence!!
L.A. - Yeah he wasn't at his vocal best in that, he had been recovering from illness. "Who Wants to Live Forever" live at Wembley is great.
Freddie is one of my biggest heroes. Would also love to see you do a show on Steve Walsh from Kansas. He’s another of my top influences. His live performances in the mid to late 70s were epic. Maybe a song like The Wall or Closet Chronicles?

I say this because I personally attended the 1979 tour in Dallas, on the 3rd night of the tour. I believe the recording was made on one of the two nights before, in Houston. This was my second ever concert after a lackluster performance from another bend, and "Blown away" doesn't even begin to describe.... Definitely the same show, costumes, set. Does anyone remember the gigantic black crown that blasted off like a rocket uncovering the band beneath, after the opening phrases of "We Will Rock You"? Freddie high over the stage on a high shelf, Brian May on another....
Interesting you mentioned this cut as a vocal rest. Really, the piano pieces were in some part a physical rest, because of the sheer intensity of his movements when singing and standing.

I went looking for the ticket stubs I still had and immediately found Sat, Aug 9, 1980. This didn't square up with my memory of still being in high school (I graduated in '79). I soon realized this stub was for a second show I barely remembered compared to the first. I so distinctly remember the harlequin outfit, and this was the wrong tour.

So, the first show I saw was December 10, 1977 in Fort Worth TX, literally the day before the Summit show in Houston that was filmed. That's why they were seemingly so identical, only one day apart.
I had distinctly remembered it was News of the World, that they opened with the kept promise of We Will Rock You, and the summation of We Are The Champions as an encore. It seems the memories of the two shows had blurred a bit.
Interestingly, the friend who gave me the ticket for Dec 10 1977 had seen them earlier in the year, Feb 25 1977 on the tail end of the previous tour.
I'd like to find a copy of that Summit show. Perhaps you know where to find it?
