  • Vocal Coach Ken Tamplin Reacts to Marc Martel's fantastic LIVE In One Take performance of BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY!
Usually when I hear a singer imitate another singer, it sounds cheesy to me and disingenuous.
Karaoke meets bad Las Vegas act or something.
    HOWEVER:
In Marc Martel's case, it's amazing.
He sounds just like Freddie (in a great way), has killer tone, pitch, phrasing, range... you name it!
I personally like his version of Queen songs above Adam Lambert.
I am glad they chose Marc to sing the Freddie Mercury parts to the recent Bohemian Rhapsody movie.
    Marc did a stellar job.
So I chose to do a vocal coach reacts to Marc Martel!

@@suprnatrulcat It's doing two things at once being difficult rather than just focusing on one.
It's easier to juggle than it is to juggle while riding a unicycle. In other words, doing two things is more difficult than doing one thing- that's what Daniel DeSouza is trying to say.
Also, don't believe so heavily in this "natural talent" bullshit. More often than not, people that truly love something will "learn" it faster because they put in the time and effort in that thing. Yes, there are those rare cases where people can instantly play whatever they hear/see, but they are simply wired differently and that's not what we're referencing.

His singing is flawless, and definitely stronger in the high register that is so much needed for the Queen catalogue, plus he has all the other characteristics that is needed to front the band: showmanship and command of the stage, chemistry and friendship with the band members, sense of humour and light and camp personality that fits Queen's style.

Hey Ken! Marc is a friend. Not super close but he knows me when he sees me. He had a gag order and wasnt even allowed to say he sang in the movie for quite some time. They apparently didnt want to spoil Ramis Oscar chances. Eventually an article was written in rolling stone about Marc but it was a sidenote that never really caught on. Then Marc did this video around that same time when the gag was lifted and as you see it has millions of views. He told me he didn't care about not being a part of the Oscar party. He was just super thankful to do what he did. Very nice guy.

The NDA is still in effect. He gets around it by not disagreeing with interviewers who say his voice was in most or all of thesongs. He just smiles and looks around, innocently. Marc was at Abbey Road Studios for QUITE some time. You have to know his voice was layered with Freddie's almost(?) 100% of the time, to bring the vocals up to standard for Dolby Atmos.

Hi! Thanks for the awesome breakdown. Marc Martel is a beast :)
Actually, when Rami Malek said he sang to all the songs he meant he didn't mime the songs but sang along, not that it was his actual voice in the movie. He wanted it to look as real as possible, so he sang his heart out :) and got pretty hoarse in the process.

I saw Marc with his band Ultimate Queen Celebration live and recordings and videos do NOT do this guy justice. His show was just over 2 hours with only a small break for him while he changed outfits and while his guitarist played a solo. Then Marc was back on stage, sounding amazing and wowing the audience with his singing and story-telling. None of the other band members spoke. I was all him putting on the show. He owned that audience right from the start. Marc has it all, charisma good looks, stage presence and an amazing voice. People who say he is lacking stage presence obviously have never seen him live. AND he sells out everywhere he performs.

The quote from malek is that he did learn to sing the pieces so he's singing during the take, but was overdubbed with marc. He had to sing in order to preserve the visual aspect of singing on camera so it didn't look like he was just lip syncing. It's not his voice used in any of the cuts from what I understand. He does mention it specifically in a couple of interviews that they don't use his vocal track in the movie takes, only marc's. The only time I think it's actually malek singing is when he's doing the first read through of another one bites the dust.

    • @lurkingknight
      @lurkingknight 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Also, in every interview, malek thanks just about everyone he's ever worked for or with in his career right down to every casting director he had to audition for in pretty much all his parts, he thanks costumers, makeup artists, everyone. For him not to credit someone would be completely out of the pattern and character he's established.

Marc Martel I feel is the closest thing to seeing a Queen concert the beats sounded so similar to the original music and his voice is close to sounding like Freddie too he’s literally just missing the London England accent I wish I was born earlier in 20th century so I could seen the original Queen but I am glad there is someone like Marc Martel honoring his legacy I was really impressed by the live concert

Can I just SAY ~ Marc Martel ~ not only can he sing a cover of Freddie, incredibly he is absolutely nailing his interpretation of this song on the piano, holding perfect tempo, rests, etc. to accompany his voice. He is 100% 'all in' this song both vocally and musically ~ with outstanding unbelievable passion. His CHOICE of the scale on the middle of the song is fantastic, and natural. I hope SINCERELY that Marc starts to go beyond tribute covers and launches into a creative process. My biggest sadness is that Freddie left us with too much potential ahead of him. Please ~ This guy can carry the ball forward. What a talent.

I love Mark he has an amazing range and plays his instruments well. I love his cover of killer Queen because he's having fun in his own style rather than showing us how like Freddie he is. He covered I will always love you and that's amazing I also love his love of my life cover too his voice makes me melt and he's a lovely person

OK Late to comment on this one, but I saw Marc live in South Florida in Dec '22. He did the Queen tribute set and was amazing. He's a much different singer to my ear than Freddie was. Live, Marc's smooth voice pierces through in the mix and he has that perfect vibrato. Marc goes all in on the big notes and hits the ones that Freddie was known to duck live. He has a spectacular instrument for sure. Freddy, is so very unique with what I perceive as a fast asymetruc vibrato with a bit more attack than Marc. One last impression: Marc brought in a large group of curious youtube watchers that night and left with legitimate fans of his talent. He's that good.

I confirm what Ken says about those shows all being scripted. One of my greatest friends and old bandmates participated in The Voice (of Holland) and he had to sign a myriad of paperwork about not speaking about how it was scripted and also that they would just get into a room and discuss his aspirations and then base on that whether they wanted him to win or not.
On top of that, he sang a few covers in the Voice studios, but every single time that was on the radio he would get absolutely NOTHING out of it. Crazy world.

That’s what Freddie Mercury was. He was a great composer/lyricist who went from one emotion to the next and to the next. He was very colorful and used all the colors and invented some too. For me Freddie was the best showman for any rock band and of course that incomparable voice. Oh my God that little singing you did, wow. These shows are arranged from the beginning.

Now, the question of who should be touring with queen is up for debate. I think adam should be there and so does Roger and bri. As good as martel is, hes pretty boring and doesn't have the charisma of Freddie or adam. I'd rather watch adam any day.
