  • In this video we will be looking at a Husqvarna 129L string trimmer that won't start. The reason isn't a common one but the lesson you'll learn is an important one. #smallenginerepair

    The contest is over and we have a winner! I ran off for a French Dip at Arbys and when I came back three of you had the right answer an hour previous to this posting. I said that when the piston moves down it draws air into the engine but thats incorrect unless you're working on one of those dirty disgusting four strokes that swim in their own filth. Air is drawn in on the up stroke on a 2 cycle and Ted Neitzel, Alans.4658 and Jamiewykes8585 all corrected me. I don't know who said it first so all three of you get a carb stand. Email me your address and I'll ship you a carb stand. Congratulations for being a 2 stroke genius! scottseidl1@gmail.com

    "Scott, line 1 please...." sent a shudder down my spine. Great. Nothing like having your job interrupted. It's amazing you can even get things done. And the sound editing is fine, i'm just happy you finally updated us on your Arby's intake. Thought maybe you went vegan...

    • @TheGreasyShopRag

      Constant interruptions are a problem and we've tried to fix it but its not working. Answer phone, sell equipment, handle questions from the counter, fill LP tanks, load landscape materials, help other techs, the list goes on. I'm not getting yelled at for being behind so I don't complain.
      I did a video a long time ago about curly fries. I wonder how many people remember that?

    Great ‘a-ha’ moment for me when you explained how to adjust the high speed jet without a tach. Great vid.

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Theres a problem with using a tach that a newb might overlook. If the spec calls for lets say 12,000 rpm and peak rpm is 13,000, you can't just find 12,000 and call it good. 12,000 will occur twice. Once on the rich side of peak and once on the lean side of peak. Not knowing the difference can cost you a top end. Thanks for watching!

    Great catch! I could see how your muscle memory 1st wiggled the carb and found it loose before just digging into it and finding nothing wrong. I wonder how many people would chase their tail for an hour for not doing that 1st?

      Plenty. My favorite work orders start by saying, "had it at another shop..."
      But its not necessarily the shops fault. Finding help is tough these days. We lost some major talent over the last few years and I feel we are just now getting back to that level of knowledge we had back then.

      I have and I've followed the wrong path many times but then I put a new carb on it 🙂. Seriously, the reason I like working on small 2 cycle engines is that they are pretty basic, making the success rate high. The problem is contained in a small one cubic foot area. Elininate the stuff thats working correctly and whats left is the problem.

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you can get both results depending on how plugged the screen is, if the muffler gasket is good, and how many times you pull the cord. In either case you're right about the muffled sound.

    Got it to “pop off” or start but not run to an idle. Which later you did not test the spark plug because you got it pop off, just not run to an idle.

    Plugged spark arrestor won't allow fuel to be drawn? I always thought is would cause overheating issues.

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If the screen is plugged then air can't move through the engine. If air can't move through the engine then fuel won't be pulled through the carb, and the engine won't run.

    Great video as always Scott, I learn so much from your content! I am in the fortunate position to have access to Husqvarna service hub for my Husqy/Jonsered repairs. I’ve had a couple of 550/2253 that wont connect to Service Hub for updates. In one case I found the reason; busted wires close to the ignition module. But I’ve had a couple that wont connect and I can’t figure out why. The saws run fine, everything is connected properly, clean and in good working condition. Any ideas? My local shop didn’t have any tips.

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I also have that problem some times or it will connect but not upload firmware to a saw. My answer is to go back to the old Common Service Tool and perform those updates. I thought it was my old laptop that might be the problem but am not sure.

    Bad Crank Seals Would Cause a No Fueling Issue 😀

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thats very true and probably the reason so many saws with destroyed crank bearings still have a good top end. The broken bearing pushes the seal out and now it won't restart. I realize you know this but there are a lot of new techs that follow these videos and suck up this knowledge like a sponge.
