Liebestraum No. 3. Translating into English as 'Love Dream', this piece is arguably one of Liszt's most beautiful works, and along with Un Sospiro, is a personal favorite of mine. It's amazing that through his music we can feel the emotions that Liszt felt back in 1850 as if it were yesteday. Since Valentine's day is coming up this week, I couldn't think of a better piece to perform for you. Enjoy ♥

When I found this piece four years ago, I was on the verge of of quitting piano for good because I had lost all passion and want for it and was completely done with it.
Before I was about to throw my keyboard away I began briefly listening to a few songs on it before getting rid of it for good. I was scrolling and skipping most songs but then I came to this one. It immediately caught my interest like no other piano song had done before. It was only a snippet of the beginning of the song, but I still loved it. I listened to it again and again before deciding to search it up on TH-cam. I found a few videos and orchestras but I didn’t really like them and was ready to give up and forget about this song.
But then I found this video.
It was like nothing I had ever seen before. I had never seen the piano played in such a way, with such emotion and grace. I never knew such sounds could come from a piano, let alone from 2 small hands and 10 skinny fingers. I was in love. I listened to it back to back to back for weeks and never got sick of it. I got chills (and still do get chills) ever time I hear the climax of the song.
This song single-handily reignited my passion for piano. It inspired me to keep going, so that maybe one day I could learn this song and maybe play it as beautifully as you have. I have now finally begun my journey to conquer this song.
Piano is now one of my most favourite things in this whole world. I genuinely could not live without it, and to think I was even considering giving it up. I have come so far as a pianist and while I do have a bit to go, I’m proud to be apart of this community.
Thank you for this. Thank you for showing me how incredible piano can be.

Liebestraum (German for Dreams of Love) is probably the saddest and most passionate of all of Liszt’s compositions. The meaning of this song is the dream of love - of being reunited with a lost love that exists in your dreams - only to be brought back to reality, where that love exists no longer.

Original Comment (Somewhere in Mid-October): This is one of my “dream pieces”. Currently working on a Bach Invention (F major), haven’t touched Liszt at all yet, but oh how I desire to play this beautiful piece. Hopefully I’ll be able to come back a few years later and say I did it!
1 month update 12/09/2022: Got a piano teacher and set up lessons for 2023 after not having lessons for almost a year! She can play this song very well and I’m hoping to eventually get to the point where I can learn it with her help (maybe 3 years from now?).
2 month update 01/10/2023: It’s the new year and I’ve started lessons once again! My teacher said I’m better at sight reading than she thought I’d be, lol. I’ve got piano homework, including going back to that pesky (but fun) invention I mentioned in October. Looking forward to practicing lots and seeing gradual improvement! As I said to her “My realistic piano goals will keep me motivated in the short term, and my lofty ones will keep me motivated in the long term.”
1.5 year update, 03/21/2024: I’ve taken a break from piano, not because I want to, but with university and not having easy access to a piano I’ve mainly only played on breaks. I also am chronically ill now yay. But I am okay, I will be able to play lots from May-August since I’m on break then :) thankfully before that I made some solid progress. I learned how to play Mozart’s K. 545 sonata in C, 1st movement last year. So I think that’s a good start in developing my classical piano skills.

The beauty of this piece is like no other. This piece embraces the notion of a “Love dream”. Love is an incredibly complex emotion to speak. It can comfort you, bring you joy, and make you feel loved and cared. Love can also tear people apart. A relative passing away is a perfect example of that. Seeing your loved one die is no one’s dream however, it does not mean love is lost.
Love is something that exists like no other. It doesn’t exist like in time, nor in space, yet we still feel it. Love transcends through time and space.
I’ll tell you what I interpret from this piece. I’m not an expert in music theory if you wanted to know. Neither do I play the piano or any instrument(I Wish I could), yet I can still interpret something. That’s how beautiful it is.
0:00-0:38 - For me, this interval is like the seed of love. The beginning of a relationship with a romantic partner. The thing is, love doesn’t just spring out of nowhere, it takes time, yet love is still there. Kind of like the ripple effect. Relationships start off small, yet can develop more significantly than anything else. The most powerful notes I hear are the Middle C, C-Sharp, F, G, and G-sharp. The Middle C is probably the most eliciting one.
0:39-1:12 -For me, this interval is when the relationship strengthens. Maybe you talk to this person every day, eat with them, and spend time with them. The strongest notes are the same.
1:13-1:32 Simple pattern yet complex meaning. What I derived from this is the start of having feelings towards your romantic partner. It starts with small, little, sometimes unknown, to the knowledge of those feelings and the volume of it.
1:33-1:56 Huh. This part was confusing to interpret at first, but what I came up with is something that many people feel today. The idea of “We’re just friends”. In your heart, you know that’s not true and that your relationship is much more than that. However, you feel embarrassed to express it. The strongest notes for me were E and D-Sharp.
1:57-2:38 My favorite part of the entire piece. This part is the reason why the song has left me in tears sometimes. THIS Truly IS TRANSLATING THE FEELING OF EXPRESSING ALL OF YOUR FEELINGS TO YOUR ROMANTIC INTEREST. Kind of like a great cry, “I love you!” The strongest notes here are G sharp, this key makes it so lovely.
2:39-2:53 -Starting a new chapter in life. This time, though, you don’t leave that door without that special someone.
2:54- 3:46 For me, this interval is another love seed. This time, though, you know what true love truly is and you’re eager to give it. Whether that be your kid/ adopted kid. Very similar to the first interval because it has a similar meaning. Same strong notes as 1st one.
3:47-4:28 Going back to your first true love, I think this is a sad goodbye. This is the saddest part of the song for me. However, that doesn’t mean that all love is lost. You still love them even if they’re gone because they aren’t gone. They’re still living in your heart

From what I remember, Liszt wrote this having in mind the message of "loving, and loving again, even when the object of your love has drifted away from you" - as he was a man of many sorrows, with his wife passing away, then both his children passing away, and falling into a depression as a result. But he tried to live on and continue to love through life despite all these sorrows, which have probably given this piece such a greater depth to the word "love"... Liszt eventually became a monk, which we may now see as evidence of how this man struggled to continue loving, even God, to a point that his love matured beyond what initial stages of young love can aspire to.

As far back as I can remember, this is one of the first pieces I heard someone play, it was a stranger on a public piano on a busy street. I asked my parents for piano lessons that night. Now, seven years later, after conquering some Debussy and Chopin, I remembered this piece and printed it from IMSLP. I still struggle through the first 2 pages (up to the cadenza), mostly because my hands are too small, but I'm so much closer to learning it than ever before, and this performance, although it's more flashy than heartfelt, reminds me that if I keep practicing, I'll be able to play it once I have the musicality to sing the melody. I encourage you to listen to a professional musician play all of Rousseau's repertoire, it's truly eye-opening. For this piece, find Khatia's performance!

You don't have to go the classical/traditional route of having to learn to read and playing hundreds of songs before getting to this one. I've personally only learned like 4 milestone songs each taking me a lot but it was a lot more fun than having to learn to read and having to play so many classical songs that I don't like. Fast-forward to now and I'm learning how to play this and it's even a bit easier than I expected it to be (although I'm only at the first cadenza as of now)

    • @opolo704
      @opolo704 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's a lot more effective to just learn a song to get to a level and then grind out a new one that is out of your reach because if you just play it slowly you can literally learn anything.

Last year around may I met a guy who would change my life. I didn’t know it at the time but he’s become a super important part of my everyday life. I started talking to him June July and august and started inviting him with my friends and I because I thought he was an interesting character. We hit it off for our love of classical music and quickly became good friends. Sometime around September he asked me out on a first date. It wasn’t completely unexpected- one of my guy friends told me he had a crush on me, which made me super nervous to be around him- i reciprocated but I didn’t want him to find out! But, when he asked me, i agreed readily. I remember at the time this was one of my favorite songs because of the purple quality of the key (chromesthesia- really satisfying that the colors kinda match up in this video) and his voice often would sound purple to me. I remember after our first date I had work to do in the evening so I turned on my playliszt and this song was there. I remember listening to this song all throughout August, September, October, and a little of November. It was very cliche but I didn’t mind at all; I felt so in love. After awhile, as school started busying me more and more, and my tastes in music shifted as he showed me more music (I showed him music too of course! Liszt is my fav), I stopped listening to this song. I found it again today, January 10, 2020. I’ve been going through a rather rough patch recently and I’ve been trying not to cry all day. Depression’s beating me down and everyday life is becoming more and more of a chore. However, this brought me back to the cold October days spent sitting by the railroad tracks together when I wasn’t so busied and felt truly happy. Thank you, Rosseau, for being a deep emotional part of my memories. I hope one day to find this comment in the future, and I hope I will still be with the most amazing guy I’ve ever met. : )

Once when I was 10 years old, I overheard this piece of music, because it was one of the ringtones on my mom's cell phone. I know it sounds stupid but I fell in love with that music because of that and I really dreamed of learning it someday, so I spent days and days searching the internet to find a free sheet music (maybe now it’s easier but I was difficult back then) until I managed to find one that was in poor condition but could be read, so I printed it and decided to learn it. I only used to play piano for fun, just like today, I hadn’t even taken piano lessons so I read the scores with my basic knowledge and finally after 4 months practicing, I managed to learn it completely, of course never perfectly... in fact my lack of knowledge made me use the left hand to play the right hand parts an octave lower sometimes and vice versa (and many other mistakes). But I didn't care at all, I was so happy to have learned such a beautiful piece complete by myself without any help and for me it was perfect. Then when I grew up I didn't have much time to practice and nobody forced me to do it since it’s just one of my favorite hobbies so I never play with pressure. I'm in college now and even though I play piano sometimes because it's something I love, I completely forgot this piece. I remember the first part and then I get stuck. I‘ve tried to relearn it but it‘s horribly difficult for me and I lose my patience too fast. I always ask myself why it's so hard for me now. It should be easier... my fingers are no longer so short. But I guess it was something that only my passion and patience as a child could do so easily. Maybe I just need to dream a little more...

When I hear this piece, I imagine a love story
0:05 You’re sitting at a coffee shop, minding your own business, when suddenly.
0:30 You see the most beautiful woman.
0:41 You contemplate approaching her, cycling through different possible pick up lines until.
0:49 You get up out of your seat. You’re gonna do it. You’re gaining confidence. But then.
1:00 You start to panic. What if she says no? What if you trip? What if you spill her coffee on her? You arrive at her table.
1:06 After you use one of your corny pickup lines to lighten the mood, you ask her out.
1:17 She pauses. She looks stunned at first. A million thoughts are flying through you’re head. Until.
1:27 That one word comes out of her mouth: Yes.
    1:33
She said yes. She said yes? She said yes! You can’t believe she said yes! You walk back to your table to grab your coffee and back to hers. You sit down with her and start talking. You have a lot in common with her. She’s a musician, just like you. You love that.
1:58 You go home that night thrilled. You’re dog doesn’t know why you’re so excited but loves it. You can’t wait to go on your second date. You start to plan it out and think about where to go. You even go as far as making up scenarios for yourself about what could happen. You start talking to your dog about it because you’re so happy
    2:03
It’s the second date. It’s even better than you thought it would be. You’re going hiking with her.
2:14 You’ve gone on so many dates now you can’t even count. You’ve gone to all of her concerts and she’s been to all of yours. You’ve moved in together.
2:20 You really think she’s the one. You’ve gone out to buy an engagement ring. You’re going out with her tonight at the best restaurant in town. You’re gonna ask her at dinner. You’re nervous but excited
2:27 You finally pop the question. She’s overwhelmed with emotion and can’t even speak
2:31 She says yes a thousand times over. You’re overcome with joy. You’re going to be a husband and maybe even a father. Your mind is racing, thinking about the wedding location, how many kids you’re going to have, but suddenly
2:39 Fantasy falls away like shattering glass, revealing reality. You’re experiencing so many emotions at once, sadness, grief, confusion
2:54 You’re back at the coffee shop. Nothing has changed, except the temperature of your coffee. You look over at the woman. She’s still there, but isn’t looking at you. You’re sad but you don’t have the guts to walk up to her.
3:12 You ask for the check and walk home, thinking about what you two could’ve become. What you thought you two became. The opportunity you missed.
3:46 Your door shuts behind you as you arrive home. You’re dog runs to see you, his tail wagging. However, he notices your discontent and looks concerned, trying to cheer you up
4:02 That night, as you lay in bed. You think about what happened today, and come to terms with it. You were sad, but you were sad about something that never even happened. You sleep soundly, content with the fact that there is always tomorrow.

I've been practising this nonstop for months. I'm finally at the stage of polishing it up. My aim has been to have it 'perfected' by the time I'm back home with my long-distance girlfriend - but as of today, we've broken up. I still find this piece beautiful. I'm still in love with the feeling I get when playing it, but it's such a shame that the first time I perform it, it won't be for her. I'm not even sure how I'll be able to 'perform' when the whole time I've spent learning it, it was with her in mind. The thought of performing it for her allowed me to persevere when it was particularly challenging. In a way, it's always going to be for her - not because it is, but because it was. Feeling this way is probably just because of how recent it is - so it's fresh in my head. But damn, it's hard not to think that. I hope the time will come when I have found the right person, and I feel the girl I'm with then in this piece - so as I play it, it will be for the right girl. And then, I shall finally be able to perform it.
