    I have a "panic mode" poncho that I bought for $1.99. It weighs in at 40 grams! I get the last laugh when it starts bucketing on short hikes/walks. An umbrella is another super cheap option to mitigate both heat & rain, but both are useless during a scramble climb. Good comparisons. Arc prices have gone parabolic. Alpha SV $900!?

    • @Backcountryskiingcanada
      @Backcountryskiingcanada  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, the price is sure right but not sure I'd trust it to repel a super-strong storm, luckily it has built-in passive venting since it's a poncho!

      Hi Isaac, that's a great question and while part of the answer is personal preference the other part comes down to how each jacket faired in our detailed review which you can find here:
      www.backcountryskiingcanada.com/Best-Rain-Shells-of-2019
      Both The North Face Drizzle and Black Diamond Stormline received the same 9/10 score, however for very different reasons, so be sure to read that full review and then you should be able to determine which is best for you. Hope this helps!

    • @Backcountryskiingcanada

      We covered Montane in the past but they declined to be involved as did mountain equipment as they are a UK brand and cannot compete directly in Canada with MEC. Similarly no interest from berghaus, mammut, and patagonia. All we can do is offer and see who is interested, but trust me we try! Each year the comparison reviews will be different brands depending upon the products they have which are new and who is interested. Thanks for the comment and interest in those brands as well!

    Thumbs up for the reviews man. Thumbs down for the prices... agree that quality costs, however, these rain shells seem to be more of a case of paying for the name, than the actual product should cost. Definitely overpriced like so many other products in our society.

    • @Backcountryskiingcanada
      @Backcountryskiingcanada  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it does seem like brands are charging more and more for products Troy but it doesn't add up as I don't see any of them recording record profits so maybe costs overall are high or competition is reducing volumes with would also increase costs. It is perplexing and also staggering the cost of things these days. I think we're starting to sound old! :)

    • @Backcountryskiingcanada
      @Backcountryskiingcanada  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would worry about the quality of an $18 jacket and I guarantee the 'waterproofing' is just a laminate and not a 3L jacket using a proven fabric like gore-tex. 10k is ok but not the industry standard of 20k but hope that it works for you.

    • @pmue437
      @pmue437 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rukka is a longterm and very good Brand from Finland. They know Rain. There is no reason for 3 Layer. Waterproof is based on a good material. If you wish you get a 200 Dollar Jacket from Rukka too.

    • @pmue437
      @pmue437 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a general issue. Those Gortex Jackets are safe vor max time 4 hours. The more rubber like material in Ponchos from various Producer are significant better. Exped and others. When you walk across Scotland for three days a large Poncho is fine, your Pack is still dry and with a Gortex Jacket this will not be the case.

    • @Backcountryskiingcanada
      @Backcountryskiingcanada  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Christopher, just so you know we approached most brands to participate in this comparison review (although not REI) and several just didn't make the cut or didn't submit a jacket. Mont Bell (who I think you are referring to) submitted two jackets and both were well-performing so they scored high in various categories. There is no sponsorship from any brands, a brand cannot buy their way to a well scoring review. The product speaks for itself, if it is good it does well, if not, then it doesn't-this is why we use a five-category points system and just don't simply say "we like this one best, it's great". If you read the review you will see all the hard work we put into each jacket review and why each one is ranked as it is. Accusing us of a sponsored review is not something we take lightly, so, please, read the review and you will see we've done our homework and didn't simply take the manufactures word (and money) for it.
