    This jacket (got it in 2020) was a paradigm shift for me. I’ve always loved the rain, but I do not believe in (carry around) umbrellas and I never owned a raincoat until this one. It’s great! The price was a great entry point into the rabbit hole of wanting a more high end gortex shell jacket. Great entry level product

    Your channel is a real gem! Helped me a lot deciding which Jacket to buy. What would be really interesting next to the upper price Segment, if you would also make reviews about Budget jackets as from decathlon and how they are different (or maybe equal?) compared to the upper price segment. I think this would again push your channel in views.

      This jacket is nice, but heavier and not as packable as many others. That is, I'm guessing, a reason why the jacket is cheaper than others. If packability is important to you, than this may not be your best choice.

  • @Errcyco
    @Errcyco ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have the Rainshadow with the stretchy 30D face fabric for their H2NO and the Torrentshell is just a more rugged version that’s a little cheaper. It’s a rain jacket that would work for 95% of men women and children. And feel good knowing Patagonia is an ethical company making environmentally friendly rain gear with their H2NO versus other companies membrane based waterproofing.
    The Torrentshell uses almost Cordua thick face fabric and has a membrane and the tricot backer. It has technical gusseting and a technical hood.
    Where it’s lacking (from the highest end raingear) is non-stretch, flaps instead of rain taped YKK zippers, baggier fit and it’s going to need DWR treatment more often then a lighter technical shell.
    For $175 you’re not gonna find a better and well make rain jacket, and again, it was made ethically.

    If you are patient and look around a lot you can find this jacket for $100.. which is incredible for 20k/20k performance and pit zips. I have had it in very rough winter weather and it performed very well. The biggest downside is packability but for the price point it is an incredible value. If I know it is going to rain, I bring this jacket, I’ll leave it out of the pack during spring/summer/fall for my Antigravity Gears jacket if rain chance is low to none. If very heavy weather I will grab my Helly Hansen Odin 9 World Infinity.

    • @kerPlanck
      @kerPlanck ปีที่แล้ว

      Why is packability a downside? Is it not packable enough?

    • @Smashycrashy
      @Smashycrashy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kerPlanck yes. But I find myself grabbing it over more packable options. But if I am heading out in a Salomon Adv Skin 12 with a full loadout, taking the Torrentshell isn't realistic if I am not planning on wearing it the whole time If I am running a 30l pack, I will find the room.
      I saw a 20/20 jacket on sale that was is more packable, the Innov8 storm something or other, they have last years model in blue (check sale section of website). Or the Montbell Versalite is the ultralight backpacker high end option but I have never bought either.

    • @meandmyjackets
      @meandmyjackets  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kerPlanck You can pack anything, but what I've learned is that people who are hiking or carrying backpacks over a long distance want their packs to be as light as possible, and their packed jackets to take up as little space as possible. So, to many people, it's important. I just want to show those points about packability for those who are interested in that.

    • @rodrev_hiking6757
      @rodrev_hiking6757 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Im a long distance backpacker but even the Montbell Versalite will wet through after 1h in good Rain. 2 or 2.5 Layer Jackets are lighter but less rainproof and durable than 3L jackets . Thus why im buying the torrenthshell. Its twice the weight of my Versalite but i need a not so fragile and more sturdy jacket

    from what i understand H2NO is not a fabric but a standard that patagonia uses. Any fabric can be H2NO as long as it handles the tests.

    • @meandmyjackets

      Yes. It's a waterproof membrane that Patagonia uses in their jackets.

    Hi Criss,
    For someone looking for a highly breathable rain jacket, check out the Outdoor Research Motive AscentShell or any one with the AscentShell technology in the same brand. I have 2 Guardian AscentShell (no more in production) bought in 2019 wich are totally waterproof and highley breathable; they are my prefered rain jackets and at a reasonnable price. I used the large one up to minus 20°C , with proper layering underneat, for high output activity like shoveling. I would avoid most down jackets however wich are often less breathable. My Guardian have pit zip and hand pockets with netting as inside fabric for added breathability when opening the 4 zippers.
    Thank you for your excellant review!

    Would this be good for skiing and snowboarding to be used as a shell?

    • @meandmyjackets
      @meandmyjackets  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a heavier weight shell with a "stiff" thick fabric. I'm sure that you could wear it skiing, but I would think that there are better choices. To me this is more of a general purpose, lower cost shell for multi-purpose use, or even just everyday around town. It is a heavier shell, so it should be durable, but it does not have a lot of features that a ski shell would have, such as a powder skirt, a pocket for your ski pass, a larger helmet compatible hood, etc. Patagonia simply calls it a "Rain Jacket".

    H2no is not a face fabric, just like goretex isnt a face fabric. They are the membrane. All face fabrics are ripstop nylon.

    • @meandmyjackets
      @meandmyjackets  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're right, it's the membrane. 🙂

    • @Errcyco
      @Errcyco ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, H2NO is a “standard” and not a proprietary membrane like Gore Tex. So each H2NO piece made was designed individually.. which makes Patagonias H2NO gear some of the most versatile and environmentally friendly gear on the planet.
      Personally, I like the Rainshadow best but the discontinued them. I’m using mine for another decade or it falls apart on me.

    Is Arcteryx Beta LT worth the price increase over this one?

    • @meandmyjackets
      @meandmyjackets  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They are a bit different. The Torrentshell feels heavier, stiffer, a bit bulkier. They also have different membranes, The Arc'teryx is GoreTex, the Patagonia uses their own H2NO. I look at the Beta as "more technical", and the Patagonia as more of a durable all round jacket for everyday or mountain use. That's just my opinion. They both are good jackets.

      @meandmyjackets  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just recently did a video on the Rab Downpur Plus 2.0. That was a nice lightweight piece for rain. It's not as heavy, which you may or may not want, but it's in that price range. Also I did a video on the Helly Hansen Loke jacket. I like that one a lot. It's a very popular jacket in the Helly Hansen lineup.

    4:13 does that mean that the Triolet is less noisy?

    • @meandmyjackets
      @meandmyjackets  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wouldn't say that the torrentshell is more noisy than the triolet. Most Goretex jackets that are 40 denier or more will be a bit noisy too. The heavier, the more "noisy", It seems to me anyway. But the two jackets are very different. The torrentshell is heavier - thicker than the triolet, but I feel that it's more of an everyday, general use jacket, while the triolet is designed and perfect for rugged mountain activities such as climbing. With the triolet, your paying for that Goretex membrane, and all the features that it has. The torrentshell is much cheaper, not as packable, but still nice, will keep you dry , but I think better for just everyday use, casual activities or just around town on a rainy windy day.

    H2no is Patagonia version of gortex, it’s cheaper for them to use as it’s their tech. Hence why jackets with H2no are cheaper.

    H2NO is not a membrane but a standard.
    Cheers.

    • @meandmyjackets
      @meandmyjackets  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True, but it refers to the membrane that Patagonia developed and uses. It's their own product. It's not GoreTex, Dermizax, etc. It's their own. Many other articles and reviews refer to the H2NO membrane that they test to meet their standard. It's a bit confusing. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate your clarification.
