  • Before he became James I of England, James VI of Scotland nearly died in a terrible storm at sea - which he believed was caused by a spell cast by witches. In this episode, Tony Robinson takes a look at how black magic and witchcraft tangibly shaped the society of our ancestors.

    Along the popular line of Witchdom and Witching, was that masterstroke of Margaret Hamilton's portrayal of The Wicked Witch of the East, in the film The Wizard of Oz.
    About her portrayal she later remarked:
    Almost always they want me to laugh like the Witch. And sometimes when I go to schools, if we're in an auditorium, I'll do it. And there's always a funny reaction, like 'Ye gods, they wish they hadn't asked.' They're scared. They're really scared for a second. Even adolescents. I guess for a minute they get the feeling they got when they watched the picture. They like to hear it but they 'don't' like to hear it. And then they go, 'Ohhhhhhhhhh ... !' The picture made a terrible impression of some kind on them, sometimes a ghastly impression, but most of them got over it, I guess ... because when I talk like the Witch, and when I laugh, there is a hesitation and then they clap. They're clapping at hearing the sound again.
    From her quite good Wikipedia bio.
    No other witch portrayal cackled quite as well or entertainingly as did Margaret Hamilton's.
    Also, for a trip back in time, do seek-out "The Witches Tale" with Old Nancy and her black cat Satan. It was a radio program that started back in good olde 1930, at the beginning of the Depression, and it was a hit. Here we can get a good idea of how old New England witch-talk might have sounded.
    Fortunately most all of the episodes were transcribed for circulation around the States for radio broadcast, so we now have these to hear as preserved.
    Old Nancy weekly introduced tales of terror to her audience with black cat Satan's most essential help.

    this still happens in some places of the world. Haiti for instance, I just read of a woman accused by her neighbour of having "turned into a cat and killed my baby".....when the police arrived to arrest her for this horrible crime, she had fled leaving her husband and children. so the police arrested her husband, leaving the children orphaned who were then taken into an orphanage. Imagine a place where the police also believe this nonsense and anyone can accuse anyone else and no proof needed. this also happens in african countries.

      @Asier Linazasoro Exactly. Witch hunting really took off in Denmark under the protestant king Christian IV. I really wasn't a thing in catholic days. It was somewhat different in other countries, but in general protestants were superstitious and dangerous. It backfired at last. The priest in Thisted was sentenced for hunting witches and demons and lost his title. That was in 1696 (and really a story). Murdering and attacks on witches continued in a few cases.

    • @Lightice1
      @Lightice1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@typograf62 It is indeed true that witch hunts occurred more often in Protestant than Catholic areas, but that does not mean that Catholics were not involved, as well. Germany, where the witch trials were the most common, had both Catholic and Protestant areas with little difference between them in terms of witch trials: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_trials_in_the_early_modern_period#Peak_of_the_trials:_1560%E2%80%931630
      As for superstition, that's pretty evenly distributed between denominations. When your faith relies on magical thinking to begin with, there really isn't avoiding superstition, be it in the Medieval times or the modern day.

    The story of the Pendle witches is tragic because in a sense, the accusations were possibly slightly true. A girl--probably only a teenager--named Alizon Device asked a man for some pins. It's not clear whether she intended to buy them or if she was begging but either way he refused and so she cursed at him. He fell down, partially paralyzed, and never fully recovered. It's likely he suffered a stroke. Being cursed at may have actually caused the stroke--not through magic but just because his fear or anger raised his blood pressure enough to trigger it. Alizon was stricken with guilt and begged him for forgiveness and when it came to trial she made no effort to defend herself. She believed she'd caused him harm through her curse. Maybe she even had. This kind of story is probably why people truly believed in the power of magic--without science, magic seems like the only explanation.

    For the common people, who were uneducated and told what to believe by the state and church, their superstitious fear is understandable - even if it was based on a disgusting sexism and prejudice against women where any woman who was different was a target of abuse. However, the people who were educated and wrote those manuals knew they'd conjured them up from their own fantasies and based them on the confessions of tortured women or outright heresay. Even the Romans knew anyone would say anything under torture.
    How easily did these witch-hunters ignore reason to satisfy their own obsessions?
    Also, these women were incredibly easy to torture and get to "confess" considering all the powers they were meant to have.

    England was no longer medieval in the 16th and 17th centuries, just a detail but there you go. And also, why weren't men accused of wizardry? Why was it only women who were tortured and burned to death? Methinks this documentary hasn't answered all the questions concerning witches!

    • @annkelly0072
      @annkelly0072 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Men were accused, tortured & murdered for witchcraft just as women were. So were children. Women however made up the bulk of victims for a myriad of reasons & have been romanticized within literature & movies, which is why witchcraft is associated more with the feminine.

    I don’t think, that you understand why this happened, because people want to held some kind of power, and it can happen both ways, either for good or for bad purpose. And we only put our eyes on witchcraft , because it does harm to the community. But I grew up and seen people filled with demons possessed, and I didn’t understand how to treat them, but thankfully for the grace of God, that they been healed, but now I know we can rebuke that evil spirit, by the name of Jesus Christ. I heard people still do witchcraft, but I haven’t met one yet.

    I wonder if the belief in magic or the fact that people would be scared to investigate magic or investigate new disciplines like science, this belief and punishment may have set us back 100s of years. Think about how much we accomplish in 30 years in medicine, so if we were to scarred to talk about our findings well that’s not how you become smarter. Meant wise thus witchcraft meant
    craft of these wis and the wise knew that anything negative.was not wise and would never yield anything worth worthwhile and that ignorance lacked light which was commonly known to be information
    Thus the expression"s
