  • Well I finally got through moving and am happy to be back, this time sharing my pre-practice warm-up! This routine has never been more vital to me than now, for I couldn't practice throughout the moving process and so my technique has suffered quite a bit. With careful daily practice and warming up, I'll get it back!🎹❤️😀

      Thank you so much!😊Practicing is coming along well and today I worked on a Prelude & Fugue which I hope to have as a video for next week. We shall see how things go!🎹

    Good to see professional musicians are hard working to stay on their level - keep it up Penny. I do practice a lot of chords and finger isolation at the piano (as a bass player), of course I do balance on a Slack-Rack for the inner core muscles and do Forrest Yoga hand stretching (opening with the other hand the finger movement radius in the negative range - soft and with a 5 sec. pause for the muscle relaxation). My best wishes from Berlin, Germany.

      Oh how interesting, thanks so much for sharing your exercises! I had not heard of them and it’s refreshing to hear of other musicians’ routines for keeping healthy. Greetings back to you from Fort Erie, Canada!🍁🎹

    So glad you have landed and returned to videography! I too think double thirds are an indispensable exercise; they wake up my whole hand and my brain, and they were the most efficient route to getting past my perennial old problem of chord tones not sounding together.

      Thank you so much! I can’t tell you how happy I am to be back!🥰 Yes, double thirds scales are great for exactly the reasons you said, plus they are especially useful for Bach players as the added note in each hand is a bit like voicing and makes one have to listen and work a bit harder than in a regular scale. They feel quite satisfying to play, like you’ve really gotten a nice workout!😀

    Sooooo good to see you back!! You sound happy and settled. Looks like the piano is in a very nice location in your new home!! Could you give us a tour of your new digs some time soon? Loved this video and seeing your warm up process!

      Thank you, Roseanne! I am so relieved and content, comfy and happy!🥰🎹I sort of “styled” another room upstairs to look nice on camera for any videos where I’m talking about things away from the piano, so at some point that will be seen. I call it my listening room but it’s really a man cave for a girl.😅

    Exercises are so important. I remember when practising guitar if I didn't do hand stretches and drills, I'd have a stiff painful hand afterwards

      Oh thank you so much!!💛 Looking for a place that would look nice on camera and not present me with backlight issues was a bit of a nightmare. It would have been much easier to find a place as a non-TH-camr!😅

    I'm so glad you're back, Penny! Your new home looks beautiful and so glad you are getting back in form -very wise insights into the physical challenges of playing piano 🥰 (I am just a former child player and sometime 'piano Mom', but I really admire your talent, knowledge and interpretations.)

      Thank you, Mary! It’s so true, with technique it’s use it or lose it! Having not been able to play for so long what with moving and all, I was reminded of how good piano playing is for one’s health. I can’t think of any other activity that demands such physicality from the hands. It’s such good exercise on top of the music being a comfort. My circulation and dexterity are all better off because of playing piano!🥰

    You can use that fingering for all major scales, even F major or f# major?

    • @pennyplaysbach
      @pennyplaysbach  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There's a different fingering for those keys. The fingering I showed in the video (p. 61 of Marie Prentner's book on Leschetizky's teaching) works for the double thirds scale fingerings for the keys of C, G, D, A, E, and B-major. Folks can view the other fingerings online, as it's available at this link: archive.org/details/leschetizkysfund0000pren/page/60/mode/2up 🎹

      Thank you, Lawrence! Indeed, physical activity is a must when learning to play the piano. I believe it was Vladimir Horowitz who said that "if I don't walk, my fingers can't run." 😀
