Easy recipie, I made the filling yesterday with chuck steak and added in the Guiness, some for the pie, some for the cook. Absolutely wonderfull, the smell in the kitchen was amazing. Today is PIE day and after dreaming about pies all night, might just do mashed potato toppers on a couple to take to work
Years ago when ships were wood, men were iron… I used to get steak and kid pie from a little fish and chips shop in Slough Bucks. It was awesome. I’ve thought of it many times since.

You are the second "John" I have found whilst looking for good food recipes, the other one is a chap I know of as "chef John". I only need one more for the set.. Thank you Mr Kirkwood for taking the time to film and share your wealth of experience on TH-cam. I have tried and loved your spud, cheese and onion pie. My good lady loved it, and I loved it. Unfortunately my son has cheese allergy so I made 2 pies, (I split the recipe in to 2 halves and use equal amounts of minced beef instead of cheese ), it did not work as well as the cheese, but hay ho that's experimenting for you. I am now looking at your snake and pigmy pie recipe. MMMMmmmmm. looks good and will be nipping down to shop later. Also bought some goodies from your shop today, including the cook book. This is the king of pies in my opinion, next to steak and mushroom, and steak / quality mince pie. When I was a kid in primary school, I pretty much grew up eating mince beef pies, which were good quality back then, without all the fillers (soy etc.) we see used today.

Some people in the Northeastern United States still cook such things. My father was from New Hampshire and I remember his S&K pie with great fondness. He also cooked things like Yorkshire pudding, to go with a pot roast, and baked beans with brown bread, the latter done in a tin can double-boiler. There is a kind of honesty you experience when eating such simple foods. You feel you've done yourself a justice. It's a sensation I now find sorely lacking in our modern, pre-packaged, convenience society.

I lived in England for a few years, and Oh Boy do I miss almost everything you make. Excellent instructions for making a really good pastry for the Steak Pie. And the filling is fantastic, but I took the liberty of adding a few chopped up Carrots and some finely sliced Mushrooms. I also used Ox Kidney to be really traditional and I used Shin Beef as the meat. The result was a delicious pie with a wonderfully crumbly pastry that re-heated very well indeed.

Hi John, we are in lockdown in Sydney so I have been baking to occupy myself. This steak and kidney pie is the best! Made it twice and the second time is even better! The only thing I did differently was to add a good ½ teaspoon of white pepper...really adds to it. As they say...black pepper for show, white for go 🤗. Not as many people like S&K now and it's hard to find. I also made your peanut/chocolate biscuits. Made one batch and then a double batch as I liked them so much? Thanks again, Bruce
Steak and Kidney pie is my all time favorite next to Cornish pasty and fish'n chips. Spent half a year in the UK as exchange student during the early 70th and the english mom cooked some really horrible food. But the Steak and Kidney pies she bought were always delicious. Anyway spent tons of my pocket money on the other two favorites just to survive :-).

I love me a steak and kidney pie, as my mother [I guess it would be 'mum' for the kind of person who would be more used to them!] used to take our little family to this Pub-styled restaurant when I was a boy, and that was something I tried and liked back then and still get nostalgic for today. my Mom taught me years ago that a bit of white vinegar will tenderize chewy meats in stews and braisings. you never taste it nless you go wild with the vinegar. it really works well.

hi john, do you have a recipe for bread pudding the browny cake type, not the custardy milky version. tried making twice now and both times it dried out edges and was still not cooked in middle, great vid as always.
I've got a good one from my daughter[1], takes some of the sugar out and replaces with eating apple. Cook longer and not so hot, did one a couple weeks ago in a big pyrex dish around 2 hours at 150 degrees, it looked a little wobbly in the middles still when I took it out but of course it continues to cook for a while after removal from the oven. I've found for some reason it tastes better after I've frozen it and then defrosted. [1] Don't think it's right to post recipe here unless John says okay

Hi John. Great recipe and I havent had a decent Steak and Kidney Pie for many years but after freezing what is the best way of reheating? Microwave or oven?
John, I’ve just made this pie but adapted it to the traditional Scottish steak pie for New Year using beef short ribs. I’ve never managed pastry like that. Quite superb. Thanks and Happy New Year.,

Easy recipie, I made the filling yesterday with chuck steak and added in the Guiness, some for the pie, some for the cook. Absolutely wonderfull, the smell in the kitchen was amazing.

You are the second "John" I have found whilst looking for good food recipes, the other one is a chap I know of as "chef John". I only need one more for the set.. Thank you Mr Kirkwood for taking the time to film and share your wealth of experience on TH-cam. I have tried and loved your spud, cheese and onion pie. My good lady loved it, and I loved it. Unfortunately my son has cheese allergy so I made 2 pies, (I split the recipe in to 2 halves and use equal amounts of minced beef instead of cheese ), it did not work as well as the cheese, but hay ho that's experimenting for you. I am now looking at your snake and pigmy pie recipe. MMMMmmmmm. looks good and will be nipping down to shop later. Also bought some goodies from your shop today, including the cook book. Once again many thanks for sharing.

This is the king of pies in my opinion, next to steak and mushroom, and steak / quality mince pie. When I was a kid in primary school, I pretty much grew up eating mince beef pies, which were good quality back then, without all the fillers (soy etc.) we see used today.

Some people in the Northeastern United States still cook such things. My father was from New Hampshire and I remember his S&K pie with great fondness. He also cooked things like Yorkshire pudding, to go with a pot roast, and baked beans with brown bread, the latter done in a tin can double-boiler. There is a kind of honesty you experience when eating such simple foods. You feel you've done yourself a justice. It's a sensation I now find sorely lacking in our modern, pre-packaged, convenience society.

Excellent instructions for making a really good pastry for the Steak Pie. And the filling is fantastic, but I took the liberty of adding a few chopped up Carrots and some finely sliced Mushrooms. I also used Ox Kidney to be really traditional and I used Shin Beef as the meat. The result was a delicious pie with a wonderfully crumbly pastry that re-heated very well indeed.

I always love how you always start by being grateful to your supporters. You’re also so calmly flexible which means we learn EVEN MORE everytime we watch. The hard fat around the kidneys can be turned into suet, I’m curious, why discard it?

I don’t know how your videos got on my feed but I’m glad they did. I had steak pie when I visited Gibraltar back in the 90’s. I’ve never found a recipe that looks like it was close. The one I had had peas and carrots in it and was very dense.

Hi John, we are in lockdown in Sydney so I have been baking to occupy myself. This steak and kidney pie is the best! Made it twice and the second time is even better!
The only thing I did differently was to add a good ½ teaspoon of white pepper...really adds to it. As they say...black pepper for show, white for go 🤗.
Not as many people like S&K now and it's hard to find.
I also made your peanut/chocolate biscuits. Made one batch and then a double batch as I liked them so much?

Steak and Kidney pie is my all time favorite next to Cornish pasty and fish'n chips. Spent half a year in the UK as exchange student during the early 70th and the english mom cooked some really horrible food. But the Steak and Kidney pies she bought were always delicious. Anyway spent tons of my pocket money on the other two favorites just to survive :-).

Love your Pies John made the Corned Beef one many times . Can I ask you what food processor do you use as mine broke I bought a new one but had to return it as the blades were only plastic and did not do the job required . Regards David

I had steak and kidney pie my first time while visiting Cambridge. It was delicious! I visited England two more times and I always went back to the same establishment for another pie. It's sad that we can't get the same kind of cooking here in the US.

You can defrost in the fridge then reheat it in the oven or microwave.

Oh this is getting bookmarked. I love me a steak and kidney pie, as my mother [I guess it would be 'mum' for the kind of person who would be more used to them!] used to take our little family to this Pub-styled restaurant when I was a boy, and that was something I tried and liked back then and still get nostalgic for today. They're not terribly easy to find in the US, so I suppose just making my own'll have to bridge that availability gap!

John love the videos especially this one because I love steak and kidney pie, do not know if you have tried this but black pudding in the mix when cooking makes a fantastic gravy to the pie.
Yes I often put black pudding in, but a lot of people ane not that keen on it, it's fantastic in my scotch egg mix.

This was so nice. It took me back to when my Mam did it for us when we were kids. She always used half lard half butter. I reckon it made the pastry easier to handle too. The filling was so lush that everyone said we’d add it to our repertoire. Thanks again.❤

my Mom taught me years ago that a bit of white vinegar will tenderize chewy meats in stews and braisings. you never taste it nless you go wild with the vinegar. it really works well.

hi john, do you have a recipe for bread pudding the browny cake type, not the custardy milky version.
tried making twice now and both times it dried out edges and was still not cooked in middle, great vid as always.

I've got a good one from my daughter[1], takes some of the sugar out and replaces with eating apple. Cook longer and not so hot, did one a couple weeks ago in a big pyrex dish around 2 hours at 150 degrees, it looked a little wobbly in the middles still when I took it out but of course it continues to cook for a while after removal from the oven.
I've found for some reason it tastes better after I've frozen it and then defrosted.
