I love Steve Morse. I love Alex Lifeson. I think La Villa is the most challenging piece of music Rush has ever done. I'm very happy that Morse has paid homage to Rush's work by doing this piece. No way am I going to compare them musically and make it into a contest. At the rarefied levels of musicianship and creativity that Morse and Lifeson exist, we can only marvel at the wonders they have wrought.
100 percent insight and understanding kudos too you Its my lifeblood and also yours i think Without performers like that life would feel a bit pointless
What an honor ! I can’t imagine be so respected that some of the greatest musicians of the world pay tribute to you and dissect your music and play it ! Port not, Morse and and the master Mr Sheehan ! Insane
This version is cool, different from the original. Alex Lifeson contributes his thing to a musical masterpiece. It took 4 guitar players, all of whom are good, to play what Lifeson does on his own on the original recording and live, which speaks to what a good composer and player he is. Forget who is better and just enjoy.
Yes! There's a lot of players that can totally kill this. Steve, obviously is one of them, and like any cover, the original is the original. Steve is one of my favs, along with Tommy Emmanuel, Beck (jeff), page, and all the rest. Great music is great music and to cover a tune like this and own it is something in and of itself! Same when the Foo Fighters do YYZ. Much respect!
Wow! There are so many intelligently formulated uses of language and sentence structure here as well as gracious responses to many comments. Just Enjoy.
I'm a huge Rush fan and I've heard very few Rush covers that do justice to the original. All I can say about this particular cover is..."very well done." These guys stick very close to the original and yet still manage to infuse some of their own unique style. Fantastic.
Truly, we have been blessed to have true sculptors of time like Steve Morse, Eric Johnson, Mike Oldfield, and Sonny Sharrock show us all how an electric guitar can carve out awesome pieces like this.
I grew up on Rush and the Dixie Dregs, they were both ahead of their times, Rush had more commercial success but musically they were both Kick-Ass. I find it only fitting Steve honored his good friends with this beautiful piece.
regardless if you like this cover or not.. you have to respect that this song (what i consider to be Rush’s most complex piece of music) was just covered by another group of incredible musicians. super cool to see how different legends approach the same song
I heard this version before i heard the original, i could have sworn it was Rush who did this except for the last solo lol, wasn't expecting that. In my opinion these guys did an AMAZING job keeping with the feel and sound of the song and the band who did it. Awesome song and great cover. The middle solo with the volume swells is just beautiful.
Perfeita versão, também com essa turma só podia esperar uma obra assim. Todos mestres no que tocam e Steve Morse eu chamo o MIDAS da guitarra, tudo que ele toca vira ouro.
+Tracy Eaves while I love Steve Morse, I'm gonna throw my weight behind Jeff Beck. But what does it matter, both guys inspire me to play more until I realize its hopeless and I start thinking about making my guitar an ashtray or something useful.
I'm tired of people saying it took four guitarists to do what Lifeson did. Lifeson didn't do it all at one time. That's what the studio is for. All those guitarists do the same thing. They play rythm and play lead over it and add classical guitar over it if they want to. They're all equally good as Lifeson. It's just that Lifeson composed a kick butt legendary instrumental. They're all accomplished guitarists just as Lifeson is.
During the era this song was written Alex was actually playing these songs note for note live. There were very few sections where there was more than one distinct guitar part. They mostly wrote the way they played lived, purposefully putting guitar solos over bare bass and drums. And they are the one and only band I have ever seen that not only played exactly what you heard on the album, but even got the same sound live. That blew me away more than anything the first time I saw them play. Alex has earned the legions of fans, many who are themselves musicians, like Steve Morse and John Petrucci. But art is only a race for the weak of heart and mind, to compare them is absurd and I'm tired of that just the same as you are.
I'll take that as a very high compliment indeed, as a fellow Rush and Morse mega-fan... and as the guitarist that actually played the solo in that spot ;-)
overall, nice version, nice solo, it's not supposed to sound exactly like the rush version--it's a "tribute" to them. go listen to rush if you want to hear the rush version.
Agreed. I didn't particularly care for Morse's interpretation of the main solo. Missed all the emotion of it. He's a hell of a guitar player though, no doubt. I'll go watch Rush in Rio version again, Alex's guitar screams in pain in that one, and it's beautiful
Simply mesmerizing - each artist bringing in their own distinct style, fit together into a cohesive and tight package. The extra little flourishes that each of these guys just can't help but to add do keep it interesting.
to have these guys mimic your music, great tribute! Just shows how good Rush really is...Great musicians in there own right showing respect. Alex Lifeson, the most underrated guitar player ever!!!
Always been a fan of Steve Morse and Rush. This was fun to stumble upon. The guys had fun playing around with the song. You can tell the drummer has studied Rush: he incorporates the drum beat from Body Electric off Grace Under Pressure at 3:40 and at 7:50 they do the corn dog little break that Rush often does in their live shows playing La Villa. Thnx for posting!
@bohs1984 I'd say Alex's technique was pretty spot on when he played La Villa Strangiato. Cant really improve much on it with overdoing it. Also Alex's vibrato... is just amazing... Ahh i love Alex Lifeson
No doubt Morse is amazing! The comparison between this version and Rush's original is apples to oranges, though. Lifeson's solos come out of a place of palatable emotion - though not as technically proficient as Morse's cover. Morse, who's always been a compassionate and humble monster gives a fitting tribute to Alex's ultimate instrumental rock composition and I'm sure a warm and respectful nod to Rush's axeman for his substantial contribution to the guitar. I'll take emotion everytime.
I'd say that James Murphy played the first guitar(electric) melodic section, you can hear that metal based staccato picking and his signature squeal, check out Disincarnate for a good taste of what Murphy can do, oh and of course his time with Chuck Shuldiner in Death
its funny cause they are all capable of playing each others riffs note for note. its all about interpratation, feel, creativity within the notes, timing, and of course the instrament of choice and the overall sound created through personal preference of amplification and effects as well as there settings. its mind blowing !!!
There was a time Steve Morse band opened for rush, so did Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert w Mr big other great guitarists opening include Vinnie Moore Eric Johnson and if I'm not mistaken Gary Moore
Yes, Gary Moore opened on the grace under pressure tour, at least for my first RUSH concert in Vancouver may 19 1984.....I still have two copies of the local poster… That was the beginning of my front row obsession with rush
Gotta agree with you there. The original solo by Alex is much tastier and appropriate IMHO. Although Morse's solo is cool to, it doesn't really hit me at the same level as Alex's, just seems more like a bunch of fast notes that don't reach toward the apex like Alex's solo does. I must admit that the solo by Alex is one of my favs in all rock music so I'm a bit biased! Definitely a fan of Morse too though; Dixie Dregs etc.

@toneclub Steve says in interviews that he sacrifices speed for control based on how he holds the pick. Most great artists are their own worst critic. I also read where he referred to Petrucci as having the right hand from hell. Petrucci cites Morse as a big influence.
@Dannymusic1999 I feel Steve Morse's solo was simply heart-searing. Not too much shred. And his classical intro speaks for itself. He knows how to build a melody and emotional intensity. This solo was done with much taste to savor. I'm sure Alex would definitely approve of this solo. As far as the other guitarists, I don't know much about them. The rhythm is great. The integrity of the song was maintained.
@Bifrons I respect and understand what your saying, but maybe i'm just a old school rush fan and i feel anyone who wants to represent anything they've done should respect playing it like they did sorry but i feel they "rush" did it dead on with no room for improvements.. And also to add maybe i'm wanting 3 people to show the skills to do there music and maybe pick up where rush is going to be leaving off soon. I respect your comment and thank you for being civil about it.

@SciMasterGeneral And yes LIfeson is soulful if you dont notice that, then you might not be a very soulful musician... or whatever... and Lifeson is at the level of Page cause after all he has made some of the most epic riffs in the world (Might wanna check Ghost of a Chance, Limelight, Tom Sawyer, Far Cry and every piece by Rush). Lifeson is as equal ammount of a good guitarrist like SRV, VH, Jimmy Page and tons more, I just like him more
Nice interpretation, however, there is nothing like the original. I had the album initially and attended the tour in '78-79 which was my very first live concert. I remember falling asleep to this song with my Walkman. I've probably listened to this song more than any other by Rush. I also enjoy Steve's and Billy's axe work on this version; it definitlely stretches areas of the song to new places. It still amazes me how far ahead Rush is from the average musician...good vibes!
I agree. This isn't about "who's better". I lover Rush, and I also love this cover. I think this cover is AWESOMELY good. But never forget: Rush CREATED this song from thin air. It's easier to improve upon a creation than it is to creat a creation.
Agree with fmbakowitz comment. To SOME of you: You guys ever listen to anything not rock.? God forbid you get into symphony or jazz music. Pieces are performed by hundreds of different artists on hundreds of recordings. Except in those genres people understand you can explore a piece and be creative with it without getting in flame wars about if Cannonball Adderly could kick Stan Getz's ass or if he's playing a section "wrong" according to you. This isn't sacred stuff gang- it's a song.
If anything, this interpretation by some great players just goes to show us all what a phenomenal trio Rush are. It's always a daunting task to rework an original... of anything.
@SciMasterGeneral In my opinion he is the greatest guitarrist ever although there might be faster, nobody is more creative more inspiring or more soulful than Lifeson.
the only reason the solo wasnt bad its cuz lifeson is kinda of a shredder... i liked this version... but im out to listen the original cuz its 1000x better
Well put. Anyone who knows about Steve, knows where he's coming from. "Major Impacts" anyone? Fanboys can get pretty territorial, though, as they struggle with maturity.... and just plain old learning how to f-in RELAX!!!!!!!! :D
Anyone notice how much energy goes into comparisons of "who's better than whom" as if all of life was some kind of competition? Artistry is expression of mind, heart, and soul. We may have personal preferences, but how ridiculous is it to say that chocolate is "better than" strawberry?! Alex is Alex - Steve is Steve. Enjoy the music.
Sorry, but that is not always the case. For many artists it's natural and easy to emulate certain other artists who have a similar technique, style or influences. Though that seemed to be true for many of my peers, for me playing Rush songs was extremely easy. It came naturally right away, and I soon could play every song of theirs note for note. I've had friends who could play Hendrix naturally like this, others could emulate Stevie Ray Vaughn extremely well and seemingly effortless, yet for me SRV was a lot harder to nail at the start. Now: just because you preface your comment to imply that _anyone who might disagree with you_ is not a _quality_ guitarist, does not make it so. That only serves to limit _your own personal_ experience. Because the _quality_ of any art exists _purely_ in the eyes, ears, etc of the viewer/listener.
Aylbdr Madison Sure you could play note for note what Alex played, but you need to understand that "God" is in the creation, not in the fucking replication.
Every once in a while I need reminding of how awesome Sheehan is on bass.
I love Steve Morse. I love Alex Lifeson. I think La Villa is the most challenging piece of music Rush has ever done. I'm very happy that Morse has paid homage to Rush's work by doing this piece. Its my lifeblood and also yours i think
Without performers like that life would feel a bit pointless
I think you nailed it, Andy Harman.
Actually, this song is incredibly easy to play haha. YYZ is more technical and "out there" honestly, for all instruments.
Andy Harman bloody well spoken
Amen Brother. Amen.

Potentially the best cover of la villa Strangiato, by anyone…
I grew up on Rush and the Dixie Dregs, they were both ahead of their times, Rush had more commercial success but musically they were both Kick-Ass. I find it only fitting Steve honored his good friends with this beautiful piece.
The Dixie Dregs were a badass band.

Damn......Billy NAILED it @ 5:42. Yeah I know you purists will say he added a note (or two), but that is perfectly ok.
I heard this version before i heard the original, i could have sworn it was Rush who did this except for the last solo lol, wasn't expecting that. The Triumvirat abides! Wow, this if fantastic…awesome effing musicians playing and awesome effing song from three other effing awesome musicians.
A prime example of a cover done right!
3:15 to 4:55 - as time passes and scrutiny will reveal Morse this centuries most accomplised guitarist if not already.
+Tracy Eaves while I love Steve Morse, I'm gonna throw my weight behind Jeff Beck. But what does it matter, both guys inspire me to play more until I realize its hopeless and I start thinking about making my guitar an ashtray or something useful.
+yossarian9985 Music is all preference. I just happen to appreciate Steve Morse the most.
I agree. stellar. just like julian bream
He may be but unfortunately was not able to capture the brilliance of Al's work :)

Exactly, like Steve Morse couldnt play the song in its entirety. Greg Howe's solo on this very song is superb as well..
@@Shredboy1 Greg didn't play on this version... he is indeed an awesome player though!
@@JamesMurphyProducer I meant Greg's own version of this song off his Ascend album..
What this simply some of the best musicians in the world paying homage to a fantastic piece if music .Ŕush couldn't be given a bigger compliment
Wow, killer cover by a killer guitarist! One thing that always awed me was the unique way he holds the pick.
6:20-7:10 Steve Morse from another planet.
I'll take that as a very high compliment indeed, as a fellow Rush and Morse mega-fan... and as the guitarist that actually played the solo in that spot ;-)
@@JamesMurphyProducer Two years later.............I stand corrected. Job well done sir.

wow a kpop listener here!
Thanks Mike for the great hommage the late Professor. Best cover of la villa
My favorite Death Metal guitarist James Murphy and my favorite gutarist of all time Steve Morse with Sheehan and Portnoy = HEAVEN!!!!
Simply mesmerizing - each artist bringing in their own distinct style, fit together into a cohesive and tight package. The extra little flourishes that each of these guys just can't help but to add do keep it interesting.
+Betsy Sommer Well said - my favorite being SM version. Steve is blistering and tasteful

This is the first song of Rush I've heard at 17 years old and since, I've always loved them;)
I dig Portnoy’s work, on this piece 🤘🏻
I'm blown away.
2:53-3:09…..you’re welcome…..one of the best Melodic rock bass solos sections in History…
Portnoy knows how to get noticed. The good way.

Wow... really cool to hear this version of a classic Rush tune... very nice!
It's Great to see such accomplished musicians give PROPS to my favorite band!
This is AWESOME!!!! Loved it!!
I think the intent here was to rock it out even more. success or fail is up to the listener.
Wonderfull
@boomnsy The first solo was Morse's. Murphy's was the wacky ( I don't mean wacky as bad. maybe I should say 'strange')one at the end.
that was an aesthetic choice made for a reason… And the reason is because Alex‘s ending solo for that song is a bit wacky as well… In a good way!
Awesome version , very tight .
Excellent cover/interpretation.
