Agree with Shannon Sharp's comment, I was also floored when I first heard this way back when and have always held it out as probably the best cover I've ever heard. True to the original, very true, and also changed it and made it their own. Rare when you value the cover as highly as the original, and this one blew me away. Vocals make it, and tight tight band behind it. Stu Hamm always rocks. For those Rush purists who nay-nay on this, I've been into Rush since Day 1 and just happened to enjoy Hemispheres yesterday. This takes nothing away from original, and it's the best cover I've ever heard.
Say what you will.... However, when I heard this for the 1st time in the 90s, I was absolutely floored & had to find out who this kickass vocalist was. This was my introduction to the almighty Devin Townsend & I'm forever thankful because of it. Love live RUSH & Devin.
this is the Best vocals for any cover song ever. Such diverse vocals (normal, melodies, growl, death vocals, emotional, operatic, falsettos, everything). If you cant seem to appreciate such talent, u need to clear your ears. Even Rush would amazed. If u want to hear a cover exactly the same, go listen to the original album.
When I went to buy my first Rush album, I accidentally bought this album: the tribute. Took me forever took realize what was happening. Anyway, this song is one of my favorites of all **** time, man. Seriously. Thank you.
I LOVE THIS FRIGGIN ALBUM !!!! this was my first introduction to all things devy. I was a huge RUSH fan and had to goto the US to get this disk. On the way down there my best buddy introduced me to an artist called DevinTownsend...odd i hear hes on the Rush Tribute i am gettin.....and a devy fan was born !
This is the best cover on this tribute! Not too mention the most eclectic grouping of muscians. Devin Townsend, James Murphy, Stuart Hamm, and Deen Castronovo!?!?! Amazing!
I was fortunate to find this tribute album in the store shortly after it was released. I was like, 'Ok, I'll bite. Let's see what this is all about.' In a weird way, it's even better than Rush. Of course, it's one thing to perform the song and another to compose it, but this is one 'tribute' album that lives up to the hype. I think it's just a really strong endorsement of Rush as songwriters. Rush is touring again this summer, you know!!!!!
Guess you never played a cover song for a bar audience. Unless well advised, people don't give a rat's arse for the musician who practices hours of no end to perform a single song. If I'm wrong, sorry for the rant.
I appreciate the interpretation of the tune. The respect for Rush is evident in the performance. Instead of trying to evaluate it as better or not, I recommend looking for what these artists were able to bring to the song. The drumming is very impressive.
This is more raw than the other covers on the album. I know many of the other musicians on the album are more highly regarded, but this cover kicks ass.
I actually have this record and as an avid Rush fan I think it's damn good. Geddy even said in an interview once that he appreciated bands doing their music. Neil on the other hand not so, Neil is a very private and even said in an interview as well that he idolized the who but didn't want to emulate Keith Moon. He's all about creating your own stuff which I also respect..
I though it was well done!! Love hearing others cover RUSH. Don't really think anyone else musically could play their songs better than this WORKING MAN line up, but I will give a listen. Does anyone know who else has been so daring to try and succeed??
I've been a big rush fan for years, seen them twice live, but this version hands down, blows the original away. It's Rush with a set of balls, best song on the tribite CD. I loved it back as a teenager before I even heard of Heavy Devy. James Murphy on guitar too, dang son.
Amazing... nice.... some may say that the original is better... i think the same but... the feeling that they put in song.... wow.... wonderfull... deen is blowing the drums.....and the vocal is trully amazing.. nice work guys...
@ViciousAlienKlown It's not supposed to be Geddy Lee. It's not supposed to be a pallate swap of Rush. And this isn't. That's why it's a cover song. And it works. And Devin's voice fits perfectly with it.
No, that's a cover, a homage, a tribute. And still, if someone thinks Devin's perfomance is better than Geddy's... It's okay, because it's an opinion, a simple matter of tastes... or are you going to say arrogantly that he is stupid for having different tastes than you? Who cares? really?
So when speaking of creative endeavors, yes it's entirely possible for a copy to be better than the original, because anything you have to say about the quality of a creative endeavor can only be expressed in terms of opinion. It just depends on the point of view from which you look at it. Your comment is absolutely case and point of idiocy being the coin of the TH-cam realm.
He isn't talking about creative endeavors, he just stated his opinion by saying that Devin's perfomance in this song is better than Geddy's. That's all.
I was about to click the like button, suddenly, wait, I'll make some comments in this channel. I have this album when they released. I think Portnoy was the 'mastermind' for this awesome project. Thumbs down now for Portnoy because he left Dream Theater.
I shat my pants at 2:24. And you are not a true rush fan until you learn to listen to Mire than the beginning. It blows. The rest of the song is now one of my favs.
Eh, I kind of understand the criticism here. This was from when Devin's voice and production skills weren't half as good as they are now, and covers have never been his strong suite. It's good enough for a fan of Devy to enjoy it, but the heart of the song doesn't really translate so I can understand why Rush fans might not. I'd reccomend everyone check out his own stuff - like The Death of Music, Bad Devil, Judgement, Triumph, Deep Peace, Supercrush... Devy's a genius in his own right.
More idiocy. Let me demonstrate.... Devin had creatively mimicked a performance of Geddy Lee who originally sang and cowrote the song. That is a creative endeavor.
@SeeDutor Idiocy. It's not possible for a copy to be "better than the original" when speaking about creative endeavors. But then, this is TH-cam where idiocy is the coin of the realm.
I think it is better. Cudos to Rush for creating the song and the cover is just great I think an improvement. Singer is great, adds a lot of emotion Geddy is usually pretty flat and unemotional.
i'd say devin was one of the seminal modal cathartic slipweights of calypso thrash there are definitely a few covers that are better than the original. they sound bteer anyway. and that is what counts ..unless you're some kind of prog fusion tit
Like alot of songs, the vocals can ruin everything. The playing is actually good. The final note in the last solo, at 6:40 is a "must have to be there"...he didnt play it.
leaving aside the Geddy vs Devin discussion, what's with the amateurish acoustic strumming - I'd be embarrassed to lay that down. The rest of the track is fair - I wanted to like it more based on DT's other work.
Perfect recording, excellent performance. vocals so so. You sing great but it just does not work with the style... I must agree with the 90s/grunge edgy comment. It just not does the work for a Rush fan like me.. But maybe it is just me... Only for vocals. The rest is excellent. I hope my English is not offensive and that I can translate my French thoughts with enough clarity.
It's people like you that sometimes make me ashamed to be a fan of Rush. Somehow because you listen to a band that a lot of dedicated musicians deem to be awesome, it somehow makes your opinion the only valid one. Yeah, in my opinion this cover blows compared to the original, but that's just it, it's an opinion, and regardless of whether or not 99% of the world population agrees with me, or just one person agrees with me, it will never amount to anything more than an opinion.
Yeah, but that's just their opinion. And it is possible to be better than the original... if that happens to be one's opinion. Butthurt Rush fan can't stand somebody doesn't agree with them, so he attacks their intelligence.
So true. These vocals may appeal to the death metal crowd, but IMHO have no place in the Rush pantheon. I do have to admit though, however played the solo was pretty in touch with the vibe of the original.
I can't stand the vocals for this. the guitar was pretty damn close tone wise. I was impressed with the guitar work. This is not a song where you fill the sound space with ohhhhhh woooooooooo yeeeeeahhhh that's what makes Geddy great he knows when to shut up and let the music speak for itself. Less is often more. Most people fuck up rush by doing to much where doing less is what creates the vibe of the song. I think the guys voice is good for other music I just didn't care for it here.
Tyler, this is the Best vocals for any cover song ever. Such diverse vocals (normal, melodies, growl, death vocals, emotional, operatic, everything). If you cant seem to appreciate such talent, u need to clear your ears. Even Rush would amazed. If u want to hear a cover exactly the same, go listen to the original album.
This is hard to listen to. I almost made it to the end but my head was about to explode. That being said, you people should stop picking on "SeeDutor". If he thinks this is better than the original, that is his opinion. He may think dog vomit tastes better than cheesbugers, or having 10 sweaty fat guys rubbing their armpits all over him feels better than a hot asian girl giving him a full body massage. That is his opinion: even if it IS wrong!
Agree with Shannon Sharp's comment, I was also floored when I first heard this way back when and have always held it out as probably the best cover I've ever heard. Purists are a bore!
Say what you will....

I didn't know this existed until last week.
Wow
I've been a fan for 10 years & only just discovered this.
this is the Best vocals for any cover song ever. Such diverse vocals (normal, melodies, growl, death vocals, emotional, operatic, falsettos, everything). If you cant seem to appreciate such talent, u need to clear your ears. Even Rush would amazed. If u want to hear a cover exactly the same, go listen to the original album.
I'm blown away
well, we weren't trying to "be better", we were paying tribute.... big difference.
So, is David Townson a real person?
He is another omnidimensional being like Ziltoid.
James, any new music coming soon? Miss your music man.
One hell of a tribute James. Art begets Art.
Amazing vocals throughout, best RUSH cover I've ever heard!
When I went to buy my first Rush album, I accidentally bought this album: the tribute. Took me forever took realize what was happening. Anyway, this song is one of my favorites of all **** time, man. Seriously. Thank you.

5:24 that sounds like spongebob
Been looking for this cover since it first came out! Thanks!
Best RUSH cover I've ever heard! :) Amazing.
Deen Castronovo - is a killer drummers...
I'm a RUSH and Devy fan...good time, good times!
Devin and Rush combined? Now THIS is awesome with a big A.
Yup!
Great! Great version!
This musicians give us a great closed up to the Rush music contribution.
I was fortunate to find this tribute album in the store shortly after it was released. I was like, 'Ok, I'll bite. Let's see what this is all about.' In a weird way, it's even better than Rush. what a voice! master singer at hist best. Love Devin 4ever
Just fearless and wicked!
I appreciate the interpretation of the tune. The respect for Rush is evident in the performance. Instead of trying to evaluate it as better or not, I recommend looking for what these artists were able to bring to the song. The drumming is very impressive.
Nailed it! And the high pitching vocal is hilarious, yet so fitting :D
This is more raw than the other covers on the album. I know many of the other musicians on the album are more highly regarded, but this cover kicks ass.

I bet $5000 to anyone that the bassist, keyboardist, foot synthist, and vocalist isn't 1 guy.
I've been a big rush fan for years, seen them twice live, but this version hands down, blows the original away. It's Rush with a set of balls, best song on the tribite CD. I loved it back as a teenager before I even heard of Heavy Devy. James Murphy on guitar too, dang son.
As James says, it's a tribute, not a one-up or exact copy. As an alternative version, I think it's great, as is the whole album.
One of the greatest vocalists in the world. Covering. One of the greatest vocalists of all time! No one sounds like either or!!
AWESOME
I know rush fans that hate this.....but I love it
This is very excellent!
Timeless.
Wicked!!!!
❤️
I had no idea this was out there.
F*ckin awesome
I love this!
Amazing... nice.... some may say that the original is better... i think the same but... the feeling that they put in song.... wow.... wonderfull... deen is blowing the drums.....and the vocal is trully amazing.. nice work guys...
outstanding
i agree, awesome.

badass!

4:42
Very foda!!!
So when speaking of creative endeavors, yes it's entirely possible for a copy to be better than the original, because anything you have to say about the quality of a creative endeavor can only be expressed in terms of opinion. It just depends on the point of view from which you look at it.

i cant find this album =( maybe i need buy it for internet
Excelent song ;D am a rush'fan so 5/5!
He isn't talking about creative endeavors, he just stated his opinion by saying that Devin's perfomance in this song is better than Geddy's.
That's all.
Nice originality!
I was about to click the like button, suddenly, wait, I'll make some comments in this channel. I have this album when they released. I think Portnoy was the 'mastermind' for this awesome project. Thumbs down now for Portnoy because he left Dream Theater.
Devin est trop hot. De loin le meilleur cover de l'album.
who plays the drums here? is it gene hoglan?
Googelbeast
It’s Deen Castronovo (former drummer for Journey). Gene Hoglan is largely influenced by Deen according to his interviews.
I shat my pants at 2:24. And you are not a true rush fan until you learn to listen to Mire than the beginning. It blows. The rest of the song is now one of my favs.
Fuck yeah!!!
Devin should have just done everything but the drums. I mean he's freaking amazing at everything he does.
Stuuuuuuu
@SeeDutor i love devin but no way is this close to the original
pure sorcery i tell you
Eh, I kind of understand the criticism here. This was from when Devin's voice and production skills weren't half as good as they are now, and covers have never been his strong suite. he wasn't thinking, he was inhaling helium at the same time.
More idiocy.

@SeeDutor
Idiocy.
It's not possible for a copy to be "better than the original" when speaking about
creative endeavors.
But then, this is TH-cam where idiocy is the coin of the realm.
Absolutely ditto to the comment below!
Not trying to take away from the work and talent put into this, but they just played it, they didn't write it. That's why its a Rush tribute.
I think it is better. Cudos to Rush for creating the song and the cover is just great I think an improvement. Singer is great, adds a lot of emotion Geddy is usually pretty flat and unemotional.
gargigulos Geddy flat? Well maybe the last 25 years his phrasing is but the 70's songs/recordings are loaded with emotion
Check it out
i'd say devin was one of the seminal modal cathartic slipweights of calypso thrash
there are definitely a few covers that are better than the original. they sound bteer anyway. and that is what counts ..unless you're some kind of prog fusion tit
Rodrigo says "who cares?". So, essentially he's eliminated any notion that his opinion matters at all because he simply does not care.
Idiocy abounds.
Like alot of songs, the vocals can ruin everything. The playing is actually good. The final note in the last solo, at 6:40 is a "must have to be there"...he didnt play it.
At first I didn't care for this version..... but yeah, this is better than Geddy Lee. :)
I like Devin and Geddy's vocals 🌝
"90s/grunge edgy"
I lol at that.
not nuff djent
the singer i can do without.
Not a Devin fan?
leaving aside the Geddy vs Devin discussion, what's with the amateurish acoustic strumming - I'd be embarrassed to lay that down. The rest of the track is fair - I wanted to like it more based on DT's other work.
I just happened upon this and although I'm not super crazy about the singer.... The drummer did an excellent job staying true to Neil.
If it ain’t broken DON’T FIX IT! Neil is and always will be a god to me! I was NOT gonna change a thing with his drum parts! NEIL=PERFECTION
@ViciousAlienKlown Way to not be pretentious. This cover is equal. Also, this is not grunge. At all. Devin is not grunge.
Except not...
Yeah, but that's just their opinion. And it is possible to be better than the original... if that happens to be one's opinion. Butthurt Rush fan can't stand somebody doesn't agree with them, so he attacks their intelligence.
The vocals are awfull, did Devin Townshed really like this song "5:24"?
I don't even know where to start apart from saying "Thanks for making a complete fuckup of one of my fav songs"
instrumentally, this is pretty good...but the growling James Hetfield-esque are way out of place.
Lol saying Devin sounds like Hetfield. James doesn't have one tenth the vocal skill Devin has.
It seems the singer is taking a -pretty heavy- shit during the intro.
I mean emotionally...
Pretty much overacted
I like the guitartone and drumming.
This is terrible
Not a Devin fan?
wow this is really annoying. I'll stick with the permanent waves version
i think if you are a real rush fan do not buy this album...
glintscollide wrong. It's the best rush tribute album ever recorded!
No thanks
Vocals aren't for me...
That's how a lot of people feel about Geddy Lee so in that way it's fitting lol
i definitely love devin....but natural science is too difficult song to cover....this is not so good...
My god that singer is terrible.
tom Harris, big mistake...
Rookie mistake
People think the same about Geddy Lee.
Well this was a waste of time
