I saw Primus close with this in Philly 2004. And the answer is YES I lost my shit. It may be one of the greatest concert surprise moments I’ve ever witnessed. And I still have the soundboard till this day to remind me of that incredible show and that incredible moment.

Rush and Yes are 95% of my listening thing but in particular Pork Soda is a great album. Every song is great. This is everything a cover should be, not only a good rendition of a song by another band, but not just playing note for note, and adding on the band's own flavour onto said song.

Beyond that, however, I have to say that I thought the guitar here sounds out of tune and a bit rough in places. But while Les's can be a bit repetitive, I thought he sounds really good.

This is one of the most intricate instrumentals Rush ever put on vinyl. Rare is the group that can even come close to the original. But if you want Rush's original version, go buy a copy of Hemispheres. If Primus wants to offer homage to Rush by covering it, let 'em...they're one of the few bands out there that can consistently pull it off.
I love how they made a nice jam session out of the intro, it feels like i'm in someone's backyard or basement. Perfect feeling, good cover (TOUGH song to cover well). Imagine sitting in with Rush in their jam sessions back from 75-79? Heaven.
This is a pretty decent cover. As a bass player who worships Geddy and that has mixed feelings about Primus I think they did a good job. Stayed true to the song for the most part but put their own flavor into it. The band are huge rush fans and Claypool is a admittingly a really good bassist.

Love Rush, love Primus, however beginning right around the 3:20 mark is one example of many where I wish Les would step back a bit, turn the bass down and give one of his exceptionally talented band mates the opportunity to shine. This is one of the most iconic Lifeson guitar solos, Ler is absolutely nailing it, but it’s hard to hear as the bass is still front and centre.
i've heard live clips where the guitar is impossible to hear or the other way around with the bass. i assume it is because whoever is in charge of the sound has the wrong extreme idea. on the albums, the bass might be a touch higher, but both instruments are prominent and compliment one another. i understand he could roll back the volume, but in the heat of a technical song like this that is not optimal, and it may be tough to tell whether or not you're playing over someone or their gear is just not set up in a way that you can hear them clearly
That drummer played it almost perfectly to Neil’s!! It's amazing, I never even heard of these guys before today. Just looking through the Rock Band 3 set list and noticed one of their songs. I put the band name here on TH-cam and I haven't stopped playing there songs! There so catchy! But then I read bios, that they love Rush. And what a coincidence, I've been a fan of Rush forever! Are you sure you're not thinking of the Roll The Bones tour in 1992? Primus didn't release an album until Feb. 1990. I saw them open for Rush on the Roll The Bones tour. Oh well... I also got to see them open for Public Enemy and Anthrax in 1991.
Instead of criticizing this, I will say that I think it is awesome for a talented band like Primus to pay tribute to Rush. Rush is one of the greatest of all time. Primus is great too, but a newer generation. Primus is just paying well-deserved honor to the Old School. Thank you for doing that Primus, and BTW good job!
I don't think either bassist cares which one is better... neither do we. This is just an interesting take on a classic. IMO the drumming is what shines and adds flavor here.
@TheCityOfKingsALC Yes, I believe Primus toured with Rush it was the Roll The Bones Tour if I remember. Geddy gave Les his Ric after seeing him play. Rush as always enjoyed touring with smaller groups to help get the smaller guys out there. Both great bands!!

Huge fan of both and knew Primus does covers. Never new they did this and they made a helluva good shot here. It wasn't recorded as well as it coulda been and sure they didn't do it perfect, so what. @TheCityOfKingsALC Yes, I believe Primus toured with Rush it was the Roll The Bones Tour if I remember. Geddy gave Les his Ric after seeing him play. Rush as always enjoyed touring with smaller groups to help get the smaller guys out there. Both great bands!!
Wow. The guitarist also does a good job giving this a "... Stage Left" feel, particularly around the 3 minute mark. Good cover of one of my favorite songs ever.

I absolutely loved when Primus would open for Rush and say we are Primus and "we suck!", then Les would completely shred the bass..

I LOVE Rush.... and Primus is awesome!... this is a great cover of this song... and a very difficult one to perform just due to all the time/rhythm changes this song goes through.

Huge fan of both and knew Primus does covers. Never new they did this and they made a helluva good shot here. It wasn't recorded as well as it coulda been and sure they didn't do it perfect, so what. If someone wanted to pick it apart they can, I heard the Rush version enough times to have it memorized and picked out everything but I will NOT complain here. Helluva go at it!
