Not sure if everyone agrees, however this is not the performance you must begin with, to be introduced to M S Subbalakshmi. A legend in Carnatic music, M S is renowned for Venkateshwara Suprabhatham. Suprabhatham is sung by the priests every morning in the temple premises of lord venkateshwara. However millions of Indians listen to MS version every morning. Many believe that her voice transports them to the threshold of lord venkateshwara. Her other famous songs include Bhaje Govindam.

Well while suprabhatam and Sahasranamam are popular recordings, MS Amma’s true prowess was stage performances. It is hard to explain how she could hold an audience spellbound! Even the uninitiated.
Yes, whoever referred this is probably a victim himself of the "pearls to the swine" syndrome. The lady deserved a better introduction and reference. Maybe a song from the film Meera or its opening remarks of Sarojini Naidu or a fast subsequent song, something like Raghuvamsasudha

This song Kurai ondrum illai is actually a Ragamalika (A song with multiple Ragas) which starts with Raga Sivaranjani, then Raga Kapi (3:51) , and finally Sindhu Bhairavi (5:11). "Kurai ondrum illai kanna" means "I have no complaints, Lord Krishna".

When Gandhiji asked MS Subbulakshmi to sing "Vaishnava Janatho", she said "I don't know the song, sorry". She suggested, in her trademark humility, she ask some Hindustani singer to sing it. Gandhi begged her to learn the song for him, and she did it - in one day. She got the song in the morning and recorded it that night in time for his birthday the next day. Usually it takes up to a month to learn a normal full-length Carnatic song. Such mutual respect from two of the greatest indians who ever lived.
She sang with pure devotion, that's why her songs have such a different vibe. Just her voice is enough to awaken the Divine in you. Most South Indians wake up to her voice. I can't live without her Suprabhatam, Saharasranamum, Rama Namavali, and Hanuman Chalisa.

You have to listen to "venkateswara suprabhatam" - the alarm clock of south India immortalised by MS Subbalakshmi. Make sure someone translates it (or get it from the wiki)
Our first Prime Minister Nehru once had to attend a meeting in Madras (now Chennai) in the early 1950s. The meeting was postponed and he decided to attend a concert nearby, where MS was performing. The hall was full and he was standing in a corner. He was so mesmerized with her singing that he bunked the meeting, and when the people in the hall requested him to sit in the front, he said "Who am I, a mere prime minister before The Queen of Song?" There's not a day in South India when you wouldn't hear her voice (if you wake up early enough :p)

She is perhaps the most recorded artist and arguably has more record sales that anyone on this planet. A lot of it is uncredited and unaccounted for because for MS, music was pure love and devotion. Not a profession or business. She gave all her royalties to charity.
As we say in tamil, it rains for the benefit for all of humanity because blessed souls like her have walked on this planet.

The meaning and story behind this Tamil song is so deep. Rajagopalachari a.k.a. Rajaji was one of the founding fathers of modern India. Along with Gandhi and other Indian lawyers, he had quit practicing law in British courts in protest of British rule. However, there was one case of a lower caste man who was arrested for entering a temple to pray. Rajaji decided to take up this case and defend the man. Rajaji then wrote this poem "Kurai Onrum Illai" which means "I have no regrets" from the perspective of the devotee running into the temple to worship despite being discriminated against and barred from entry.
It also often amazes me that he can pen such lyrics given the time in his life that he wrote it. His wife had died years prior and he raised 5 kids on his own while fighting for Indian independence. Several of his friends and comrades were killed along the way. His son-in-law (who was also Gandhi's son) died. And after all of this, he can still say "Kurai onrum illai."

A humble request to you guys, before reacting to some videos please learn or be informed about the person you are watching or showing. If not all, at least the legendary ones. MS Amma is considered to be one of most respected woman in Indian history. She was one of the most respected person by Mahatma Gandhi to Shri Abdul Kalam (Former President of India). Almost all former Presidents to legends were her fans. She was not only a singer but a great philanthropist too. A casual display of a song or a video of hers as someone wanted you to react on that is actually an insult than appreciation. We are not expecting a wow reaction to it, but, a few words in the beginning, respecting her achievements in life and a dedicated hearing after knowing the meaning of the song she's singing.
