ahahaha I love Tony's face when he realises he's just sealed the deal on one of the best chords in barbershop history =P I don't think I've ever seen an uptune with that much energy
What this group has is something many quartets miss...........perfect blend. The tone of all four voices melds perfectly. Its like warm honey............absolutely exquisite. Each one of them could solo with equal merit. Together they are SPBSQA magic!
So many "modern" quartets miss this. The Lead and the Bass are the most critical voices (except for special situations) and the other parts can throw the chord out of balance if they are too loud.
Never heard this song, and had no idea that they had the highest scoring uptune. They're volume control and tuning is beyond amazing, but one thing that really stuck out to me as a new barbershopper was the timing! Just wow.
how fantastic to hear this against the 1999 performance. This is so nailed. Having heard it too many times i am still in shock. Perfectly together, awesome timing, such rythmic precision and swing and energy. I think this is the finest barbershop stuff out there. Joe even reals it in a bit, and when he doesnt there all seem to rise and smash more ff locked chords. WIPE ME DRY
Of course I love Greg Clancy on Tenor (all time favorite over Kipp & Tim) but Gary & Tony just blow me away with all of the parts they can cover and just how musically they always sing!
In my opinion, Platinum kind of got the shaft due to score inflation. I love After Hours as much as the next guy, but Platinum truly deserves top filling.
I thought Lucky Old Sun scored one point less...? Might be my mistake - I know that Crossroads got penalised a couple of points for some reason (never found out why!)
with Tony D on tenor, and (just to mess with people) Joe Connelly on bari pretty much anyone could sing bass and they'd pretty much just have to ask for the gold...
@hewb32 I'm not sure what your 93.3% is referring to, as Platinum scored a 93.9% when they won, not a 93.3% (this is also denoted in the video description). This record DOES still stand, as the second highest of all-time is Crossroads with a 93.7%. Keep the whole world singing. :)
their record score of a 93.92 average stood until 2018 - After Hours averaged 94.70 that year which I honestly don't see being broken for at least another decade, their entire set was utterly ridiculous
@Jackman24601 Are you a Barbershop Harmony Society member? This arrangement is in the catalogue. (There's a handful of different arrangements of this song done by different arrangers, I believe this one was Ed Weasche.) If you're not a member I believe you can still order, call 1800 876 SING and ask for the Harmony Marketplace. They're really helpful and can tell you.
I disagree, that’s definitely Tony D singing his usual baritone butter. If you wear headphones you can hear the bari part on the right channel, so for sure Tony, not Gary!
their singing is wonderful but the performance is borderline creepy on the ballad lol. makes me wonder how judging changes for presentation over the years
@Matthewschneider123 Do you even sing barbershop? Because if you don't you shouldn't be making these ridiculous comments. First of all the most important thing about singing barbershop is doing it properly then humor comes second! Also some quartets don't want to be a "comedy quartet" that is their choice! If you understand the craft of barbershop then you would understand how difficult it is to pull of a performance like that. Your opinion is off of movies so it is really not a educated opini
If you re-read my comment I said FRED has humor while not sacrificing beautiful harmonies and losing the "barber-shop feel". watch any barbershop in any old movie, the originals had humor (or at least enjoyed performing together), these guys have one constant fake smile, its like they are trying too hard.Perfect tone/harmonies is admirable, but at what cost?
FRED is better, so much more humor, while still having beautiful harmonies and staying true to the Barbershop feel. This group is like an over-talented 4-person choir. GO WATCH FRED QUARTET!
meh, like dragonforce of barbershop quartets, just a bunch of extremely good players except in dragonforce they function, FRED is better. FRED sticks to the feel of a Barbershop Quartet that we all think of.
This is beautiful, but if you ignore the lyrics, and listen to how the song goes. It sure sounds creepy. Especially if you just look at Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin) there on the left. He makes some weird faces.
+Goggalor1990 I think he's got a great bass voice, but more importantly, he matches the best Lead ever, so gotta love him just for that! He nails that last note in the second song.
Those E flats in the first song are no joke. Pretty incredibly resonant, doesn't sound too Kermit-y to me. Last note of "Cuddle Up, Sweet Lovey Mine" is a bit froggy, but what do you expect from an operatically trained bass?
ahahaha I love Tony's face when he realises he's just sealed the deal on one of the best chords in barbershop history =P
I don't think I've ever seen an uptune with that much energy
Platinum is one of the cleanest and most refined quartets there is. Smiling Through is an amazing ballad also.
Total nerd out; Gary’s cutoff move at the end of the uptune might be the most epic thing ever
The look on Tony's face on the ending chord says it all "I just nailed one of the best end notes, full voiced." Absolutely astounding!
Tony DeRosa full-voicing that last chord in Cuddle Up A Little Closer is just mind-blowing. Unbelievable.
If you split Tony's talent into four equal parts, those four parts would still win gold.
Gary Lewis is going to win gold on all four parts someday
3:03-3:58 is my favorite part and it gives me chills every time
That first number, Smilin' Through, just melts me away...
Got to love Clay Hine's arrangements
Gary's actually my choir director at Solon Highschool! I feel extremely priveledged to have such a great guy working at our school. /)w(\
You Lucky Luke, you.
That ending. Pur them on top. 😳
Never heard this song, and had no idea that they had the highest scoring uptune. They're volume control and tuning is beyond amazing, but one thing that really stuck out to me as a new barbershopper was the timing! Just wow.
Omg the overtone on the ending of cuddlin up close is mind blowing my quartet watches that to hope that happens
These songs are so soothing these guys are great and I recognise two of the guys one is now with Max-Q and the other with Old School.
how fantastic to hear this against the 1999 performance.
This is so nailed.
Having heard it too many times i am still in shock.
Perfectly together, awesome timing, such rythmic precision and swing and energy.

WIPE ME DRY
Kevin Miles, currently a singer with the Dapper Dan's of DisneyLand! I got to sing with him a couple years back, GREAT guy!
Just to put them in one place...
Smilin' Through arr. Ed Waesche and Lou Perry
Cuddle Up a Little Closer arr. Clay Hine
Clay Hine-an absolute god
That has got to be the best finish to a set in competitive barbershop history!
favorite tag I've heard in international competition....or any competition for that matter
I wanna straight up open mouth kiss you for posting all these videos......
PEAK BARBERSHOP RIGHT HERE
I love this. So, so much! My Wife is sick of me singing these two songs!
You must be a Bari...
I've wanted to hear some pre-Max Q Gary Lewis work. I didn't think it existed. Thank you. And that ballad tag was pure glory.
7:29 this is the bees knees.
That tag was incredible! Love Tony!
Most beautiful Baritone line ever. like buttah.
That last post is awesome! I wish I could hit this high bass note with the chest voice.
One of the best tags ever in the second song.
BEAUTIFUL D chord at the end. Props to Tony’s A4.
Last chord. Omg amaze.
That bass pop at 7:04 is to die for
Cuddle up is incredible!!
Of course I love Greg Clancy on Tenor (all time favorite over Kipp & Tim) but Gary & Tony just blow me away with all of the parts they can cover and just how musically they always sing!
Great stuff !!! Fantastic !!
One of the best, definitely!
Barbershop Gold! Highest scoring uptune ever! And here it is on tape!
Joe Connelley for president 2016!
Kevin Miles looks so excited at the end of the uptune!
Next time someone talks shit about baritones, show them Tony sending that last note in Cuddle Up Closer out of the solar system.
wow.. heard smilin' through on Pandora
Absolutely mind-blowing, but I can't help feeling slightly sea-sick when watching Cuddle Up A Little Closer...
@BshopHero I couldn't agree more. He gets a few lines every onece in a while with Max Q and I always love it.
i’m probably so late to this. but I can’t fathom how amazing this is
Yes!
I've wanted to hear some pre-Max Q Gary Lewis work. I didn't think it existed. Thank you.
7:55 epic win
@10Cnote two of them are in Max Q (Tony De rosa and Gary Lewis) and one of them is in Old School (Joe Connelly)
WOW. That's about as good as it gets.
I'll be honest here. I wasn't particularly excited by this performance... and then 7:50 happened. Clearly I have much to learn.
7:08 is why I love Tony DeRosa. :P
i love the 4:20 chord.... every time i hear it i get chills.
WTG on the ending Gary!
PSA: This quartet scored, in their final, the highest score ever in barbershop history, nearly 94%.
Nikau Wineera Not anymore, thanks to After Hours.
Congrats to them, they deserve it, but still, Cuddle up a little Closer is still the highest scored song yet. That Lucky Old Sun is tied with it.
In my opinion, Platinum kind of got the shaft due to score inflation. I love After Hours as much as the next guy, but Platinum truly deserves top filling.
I thought Lucky Old Sun scored one point less...? Might be my mistake - I know that Crossroads got penalised a couple of points for some reason (never found out why!)
mackindle12345
I had read on here that it was because that the lyric “Lord” in ‘That Lucky Old Sun’ was a religious reference.
Wonder if Tony could try tenor in a quartet and see if he beats Gary to 3 different parts to win Gold
8:01 TONY, TONY, TONY!
I like Gary on Tenor here!
Aren't they the quartet with the highest score ever?
with Tony D on tenor, and (just to mess with people) Joe Connelly on bari
pretty much anyone could sing bass and they'd pretty much just have to ask for the gold...
@TheMjb25 And damn proud of it.
Wanna be a Pentatet? Sing a Low F# at the last chord of the first song at 4:45 ;) so amazing
Holy SHIT
@hewb32 I'm not sure what your 93.3% is referring to, as Platinum scored a 93.9% when they won, not a 93.3% (this is also denoted in the video description). This record DOES still stand, as the second highest of all-time is Crossroads with a 93.7%. Keep the whole world singing. :)
Paul Franek Now it’s 1. After Hours 94.7 2. Platinum 93.9 3. Signature 93.8 4. Crossroads 93.7 unless I’m missing someone.
yaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy
DeRosa head bobble @ 8:01 lol
He must've heard that overtone.
07:48
Kevin miles ( Bass ) has a opera Bass voice
Clay Hine
very very nice
Kevin Miles is a god. I'm just sayin'.
Tony suffocated! Look at 8:02 to him
7:20 the transition here… inhuman.
@Jackman24601 Smilin' Through
that bass is more like a baritone
He was talking about Tony obviously.
That High A at the end.... ;D;
That was pretty awesome, wasn't it?
Just mail it in.
can't close my mouth...
Wow, at 93.3?!! Does that record still stand?
their record score of a 93.92 average stood until 2018 - After Hours averaged 94.70 that year which I honestly don't see being broken for at least another decade, their entire set was utterly ridiculous

thats the guy from old school!!! it is isnt it?
@TheMjb25 Thanks for the lulz!
Does Gary have perfect pitch?
Lol Gorman it's Dave.
4:18
Probably the quality bass.
.....That'S.....BarberShop........
Does Gary lewis take the low baritone part at the end of the first song?
Yes!
I disagree, that’s definitely Tony D singing his usual baritone butter.
If you wear headphones you can hear the bari part on the right channel, so for sure Tony, not Gary!
Why even try to compete against this? De Rosa for President.
their singing is wonderful but the performance is borderline creepy on the ballad lol. makes me wonder how judging changes for presentation over the years
Just like other things, boundaries get pushed I suppose.
@iAmHamlet50 Yes, 93.9%, as it says in the description. And, having watched this video, is there ANY doubt in your mind as to why? ;)
Your single-mindedness is what makes me sad. FRED makes me happy
@Matthewschneider123

Then that is punishable by torture and THEN death, then!
Anyone else find the part when they sing "I wanna cuddle up a little bit close" a tad creepy? :D
FRED is better, so much more humor, while still having beautiful harmonies and staying true to the Barbershop feel. This group is like an over-talented 4-person choir. GO WATCH FRED QUARTET!

Am I the only one who doesn't like the sound of the Bass? It's more Kermit the frog style than a deep, rumbly bass.
+Goggalor1990 Many hardcore barbershoppers and fans idolize his bass. So I don't know.
+Goggalor1990 I think he's got a great bass voice, but more importantly, he matches the best Lead ever, so gotta love him just for that! He nails that last note in the second song.

Demon Voice there's one at 1:04.
Demon Voice Wow! You'd think his voice would get worse with age but that was phenomenal! Super resonant!
