    Tony is a brilliant singer!

    I'm obsessed with Gary's "Oh yeah!" at 1:15. So relaxed and natural.

    Everything about this quartet is incredible. Match, blend etc. But most of all it's Tony and Joe's ability to be on the same page and know the other so well. Watch at 6:23 during Tony's post., and again at the end of the tag. He looks at Joe, and Joe gives back a little wink acknowledgment. Not sure what the communication was, (likely length of final chord or something) but you know by their looks that they knew what each other meant. Absolutely fantastic. Only a few quartets in history changed barbershop, and Platinum was one of them!!

    It takes a lot of skill to blend that well. Singing isn't always about showing off how good our own voice is.

    So I was on a trip to DW in Orlando in about 1997 or 1998, and saw Tony singing with the Voices of Liberty (along with Gary & Kevin). Tony didn't know me, but I had met him a few years before as a freshman in college in Tampa with Keepsake. I was awestruck, and of course hooked really hard on barbershop by Keepsake. Tony was totally friendly and approachable, and after some small-talk about bbshop, he said, "yeah actually we've just started a new quartet with Gary (standing there at the time), and Kevin over there (across the atrium) and Joe on lead. We're pretty excited about it." I had no idea what a crazy congregation of talent was about to be Platinum.

    I've always wondered about that, but I'd like to see it when they're all on different parts... Like, De Rosa on bass, Connelly on bari, Lewis on lead and Oxley on tenor. Probably still better than most of the quartets out there.

    @Jackman24601 12 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds to me that on the final chord of Undecided Medley, Kevin is singing the root, Joe is an octave above him, Tony's the third above that, and Gary's singing the high fifth. Can someone please clarify/correct me?

    I haven't seen Kevin Miles doing any barbershop since 2000, which is a great pity, he's brilliant! Where's he got to? By the way, Tony, EPIC post in Auld Lang Syne!

    @XarionGod If we weren't in different parts of the country, I would say we should put a quartet together. I think we could ditch this "rivals" thing and be Most Happy Fellows.

    What if Gary Lewis, Joe Connelly, Tony De Rosa, and Jeff Oxley started a quartet? Best one ever?

    • @chosofps
      @chosofps 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BMath850 they cant because that platinum you can only have 2 people from a quartet to make another one.

  • @Jackman24601
    @Jackman24601 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Kinda the point, you're meant to hear the lead and, to an extent, the bass, but the bari and tenor should always be background sound...

  • @mattdre88
    @mattdre88 13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm sure it's dealer's choice, but would it have been more appropriate for the baritone to take the "gotta say yes" at 2:05?

    It would probably be more of the standard Old School barbershop style to give the bari that line, but that would leave him without a lot of time to sing the pick up that leads into the final Revival of the refrain =P
    And besides, they're just mixing it up a tad, The Rapscallions...

    As good as Gary is on tenor, I am sorry to announce that he isn't able to sing tenor that well as he used to. He's losing his tenor. But what Gary can do is sing Bass and Lead (and obviously baritone).

    how f*cking good is gary Lewis?!
    also i do prefer tony in a baritone, rather than lead role. I'd still like joe connelly to hold back on occasion rather than giving it the beans, surging...i realise thats who he is, but it's still a preference worth stating.
    overall i'm so consistently thrilled by -repeated - listening of this.
    Talkinshop you are a LEG END and i hope these remain on here for EVER...
