This performance was the springboard to thousands of quartets singing "Bill Bailey" at contests for the next 10 years. Of course no one came close to singing it like these guys!
You could try my approach: I looked online for a cd to purchase and came up short. So I emailed Doug Harrington, and asked if he knew where I could buy one. About a week later I got a package from Sweden with a cd of theirs. My point is he's a really cool guy.
If you enjoy torturing yourself - actually pick your favorite top 10 qtet champs since 1973, then attempt ranking them if they all competed on equal ground. Try really hard to leave biases out...be a neutral judge of your own top 10 and have a ball ranking them! Ha! Why '73? Because Dealer's Choice, but we all know that. They were the culmination of all previous years, and THE BAR for all things to come. Anyway, Second Edition is way way up on the list, but the higher in the list we go, the torture compounds lolol. I think SE's arrangements and song choices are among the best of all. Just excellent arranging and delivery. "Mistakes" and "Jeanie" and some other ballads of theirs are just timeless. Oh, then when you resolve this, then you have to do the same from circa 1940's up to 1972. Some of them are super sharp, working within their own era say from late 50s to mid 60s or so. Amazing in fact...but the vision of the DC arrival just hadn't been quite figured out yet...thus the 72/73 Great Divide. Nevertheless, enjoy it all!
Mistakes is pretty solid but I’m sorry. The bass on the final goodbye, the way he sings bye sounds really funny to me 😂 Still an amazing group to win the crown :)
@Emergency051 That's Mike Scott's bro there. A great baritone himself (which every one is) who was a great chapter president for quite a time here in Algona, IA!
The ring is even better on their album version of this song. It’s literal perfection. It’s like you just pressed the keys down on a freakin’ organ. They’re so locked 100% of the time.

These guys are masters of vowels. Pure ring with edge.
THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!! WHAT A GREAT REMINDER OF HOW GREAT THIS QUARTET WAS...IF THEY COMPETED TODAY THEY'D PROBABLY WIN
This is like the 6th time I've watched this today
jackson! i didn't even know you had a youtube account
Wow! That is the Crossroads Tenor! Cool.
Fred Farrell - Tenor
David Harrington - Lead
Doug Harrington - Baritone
Jamie Meyer - Bass
My all time favorite - I would love to the CDs. I lost them over the years.
the four people who disliked this video were the guys who came in second place
That chord at 1:07 is nasty (in the best possible way)

I started Barbershop listening to them. I would love to purchase their CD's
Thanks for posting this!!! rare find.
Never heard a barbershop seventh chord being sung so low. It sounds, like you said, "crushing".
thats the tenor from crossroads, right?
Yes. That’s fred from crossroads
my favorite quartet
The lead's voice sounds so luxurious... like a brown felt coat.
1:03 is an amazing example of how to crush a chord.
dat "love" chord in the ballad
Best quartet ever

Am I hearing the chord at 1:03 correctly?, B-D-G#-E from bottom to top? Hard to tell because there's so much ring
It's a D7 in second inversion. A-F#-C-D from the bottom.

Wow, second edition is great! Does anyone know where I can get the PDF file for this song?
Hah love how they can just switch who takes the post of the first song.
They sang Hello Ma Baby again in '89, right? Was that in an earlier round?
+Wahl95 different round
what is the name of the second song here?
+James Monsour Mistakes
Fuckin 5:55 all day long
I have never heard anything like that in barbershop! That is crazy
I’ve always LOVED that chord❣️. I lost my bootleg tape years ago! Always a Favorite Quartet of mine❤️❤️❤️❤️
They are so dressed up, I would have loved to see them with a top hat and cane!
too much overtone in one set. . .
My favorite quartet
