      Alessio Romano in fact most of the band only got the music a few days before the first show of the series where they recorded this album. And they only got skeletal midi demos. But they know bassplayer Michael League so well after years of working together they understand his compositional shorthand.

    • @williamhawkins102
      @williamhawkins102 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      To me that is the most amazing part of all of this - Michael hadn’t written most of the album when they landed in Europe - just rough sketches, and not all the tunes.That they function like that is a testament not only to their insane level of musicianship, but familiarity with one another but it still doesn’t explain how Lewis, who was last minute addition, a fill-in drummer for all practical intents, was able to do what he does on this....Incredible.

  • @FatCandyProduction
    @FatCandyProduction 3 ปีที่แล้ว +127

    This album was written in 4 days before this and then recorded in 4 sessions where they picked the best ones. The drummer wasn't there for the whole writing and rehearsing and learned it in 18 hours (including a 9 hour flight). This band is not human 😂

    Andrew - they started adding audiences to their recording sessions somewhere around the "Ground Up" album, because it gave them more energy performing in front of people. This crowd is some string musicians (for other tunes on the album) and fans that came out to see them.

    This song is the perfect example of “are you rushing or are you dragging?!”
    This song is such an amazing usage of dragging while still stayin together perfectly.
    And then the legendary key solo , the bass drum does that pattern where it rushes the 1-2 1-2 1-2-3
    It’s just amazing how this entire song is a percussive masterpiece. Like even during the keyboard solo - it is incredibly percussive
    Like imagine this same song but with a basic back beat and if you “corrected”
    The dragging pace of the horns. The song would just have an entirely different vibe.

      With some other band. So they they gave him their set list - and he was able to fill in for the remaining shows on the last 9 days of the tour. And then they just said hey. Wanna be our new drummer??!

    Cory's solo is so off the charts that it is easy to lose the sax and trumpet solos. Their tones are so beautifully close. The trumpet bends and squeezes the notes. Crazy good. Regarding whether anyone realized what they were about to hear....NO. Not even Cory did by his delighted expression towards the end. During live performances, Michael League doesn't notify who is to be doing the solos until a few bars before it's supposed to start. Keeps everyone involved and inspired. Shaun Martin’s reaction is priceless.
    Edit: it’s been 40-some years since I was a vocalist and horn player in high school. I have always had an appreciation for many (not all) genres of music. My personal playlist on my phone is considered a wild variety by my friends.
    But that list has grown so much in the past few years mainly because of this phone and TH-cam. I bet Michael League (bass player and founder of Snarky Puppy and composer/arranger of much of their music) doesn’t realize how much he has broadened many people’s music appreciation. I would never have found many new artists on my playlist without Michael’s creation of S. P. Cory Henry, Shaun Martin, Bob Reynolds
    Larnell Lewis, Mark Lettieri, and more are great additions to my musical world and have led to many other new (to me) artists. Thank you, Michael League for being the seed of a huge new playlist.

  • @soocool78
    @soocool78 4 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    I wasn't there, but this is the way they record it:
    They play through the entire album over a few different days, they then take the best versions of each of the songs and put it on the album. There's some clips of Lingus being played on the other days where Cory's solo is not as good (i mean how could it be?). If you watch all the videos from the album, you can see that the clothes of the musicians change as they performed it on different days...However each individual song is "one take". All the solos are actual improv solos and not written ahead of time (which you can see if you find clips of the other songs from different days)
    The crowd are paying for their audience. They release tickets to these live recordings. However they haven't done it since this album, and have since grown in huge popularity. They plan on the next album to be like this recording. I shudder to think what the price of those tickets will be.

    Sry for commenting again ;) I'm an engineer. And there's a common phrase (or prayer?) along engineers (at least in Germany :) - "Dear God, at least once in my life, let me work with professionals!"
    I so envy the Snarky Puppy members. They get to do that every day!

    Awesome reaction! I've been binging Lingus reactions all day, and in every one that I've watched (yours is about the seventh or eighth), people have the same reaction that I did when I first heard it: Either jaw-dropped mouth agape, or grinning from ear-to-ear during the whole 10 minutes of the song. This is a top five fusion song of all-time for me - I can put it on repeat for an hour and not get tired of listening to it (or watching it in this case). And, as a keyboardist, yes - Cory's solo is easily one of the top five synth solos of all-time. Maybe top three - maybe best ever. And I've seen transcriptions of that thing and it makes me quiver. Thanks for the great video!

    This album was recorded in a studio in Utrech, The Netherlands; I would assume the majority of audience members are dutch. This is the album Larnell was called in as a stand in for SP’s drummer “Sput” Searight (who had passport issues), and Larnell learned pretty much the entire set ON THE PLANE RIDE OVER.
    All compositions are created in Logic and each band member is given a file, with not just their respective parts, but ALL parts, so they can better understand how their part fits.
    I attribute the amount of talent in the room to where the band started, the University of North Texas, which has been attracting the best jazz musicians for approximately 50 years or so.

    So many "team building" events I had to partake in my live. So many activities to try to make people understand each other and work better together. When I was a teen, I played in a band (yeah, not good enough, thou ;). But I never experienced minds in a sync more than when playing with my friends. You want to teach people how to achieve a common goal ? Let them do music together!
    And Snarky Puppy is so exceptional good at this. Mind you, they're not playing by any notes. Those beautiful in-sync sloppy drags by the horns at the beginning of this song are all just by feeling that guy by your side. To me, "Lingus" - and Snarky Puppy in general - is not about some solo of some band member. It's about that beautiful sync of the band members. And that horn section is so unbelievable damn tight!

    When they played this at the java Jazz festival Cory Henry was not there so we got a guitar solo instead - epic - worth watching. Re teaching this track, there is a Larnel Lewis reacts vid where folks do drum along to the tracks off We Like it Here - very well as it happens...

  • @jimpemberton

    The brass are tight as anything and the trumpet / sax dialog is fantastic. Corey hit outer space with that solo. He didn't simply play to the chord progression, but invented a new chord progression over the top of the one outlined by the bass. It's insane how good it sounds. It's like Corey was playing a different piece inside of the piece that was playing. I don't know, "piece-ception"?

Wasn't as crazy as this one, but still full of so much talent and soul. He just pours his mind and soul through the keyboard, it is so fun to watch. Definitely one of the best soloists of all time

    So if you are wondering about the recording process for this song, I've done a bit of research, you may already know this though. The album was recorded over a few days in the studio, playing the entire album each time. The songs were selected for the video from which they thought was the best take. I'm not sure but they may have played songs more than once a night, but I've seen that there were at least 4 takes for lingus. You could buy tickets to the studio session, which got those people in. There is a dvd that I think has all the takes of each song over the recording process, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

    • @gilbertk
      @gilbertk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just did a check and the dvd doesn't have all the takes of each song, but a few different takes of some songs.

At least for the first minute or so 😄👍 I'd heard the name 'Snarky Puppy' already quite some time ago but listened to their actual Music for the first time only a few weeks ago, when their 'Tiny Desk' show was in my YT recommendations. A friend who'd already heard and also seen them play live here in NZ suggested I'd also check out Vulfpeck, whose Music somewhat goes in the same direction, just more funky rather than jazzy. Their bassist Joe Dart's name in particular has been popping up everywhere around me recently, too. Snarky Puppy are more my cuppa, though 🙂
