Talking The Cartiers with Wu Chen of the Economist China

  • Sharing a short clip from a longer interview I did recently with Mr. Wu from The Economist China in relation to the Chinese publication of #TheCartiers - or 卡地亚家族传 as it's now known in China.
    In this clip, Chen 吴晨 Wu pointed out the apparent paradox of Cartier's early business success in that they were so gifted both in product design - i.e. in creating icons like the Tank watch (in a way that even #Apple tried to learn from) - but also in marketing, especially 'word of mouth' and in understanding the power of building networks. I shared my own understanding of the reasons behind this - i.e. the complementary traits of the three Cartier brothers, specifically in this instance Louis' exceptionally creative mind allied with the business genius of the middle brother, Pierre Cartier. We also talked about the importance of alliances for the firm - in the form of strategic marriages, especially with the Worth fashion house.
