The Cartiers at the Victoria & Albert Museum

I heard someone say recently that this lockdown has been like the world pressing ‘Control Alt Delete’, pausing for a moment life’s treadmill in order to refresh it all. It struck a cord - this time last year I was frantically trying to finish my book after the publisher brought forward the deadline by 6 months (their reasoning- which came as a surprise to me - was that 2020 was an election year in the US so there might be limited media bandwith for non-political books). Turns out it was a prescient decision but for a far-more reaching reason than the one they were expecting. Looking back, I was pretty stressed at the time (my family would say that was an understatement… summer definitely did not mean a holiday last year!) but glad I managed it in the end, especially as I was able to squeeze in a few wonderful events before the world pressed pause. This one is a little snapshot of the London launch @vamuseum in November that I wanted to share with you as was such a milestone for me. Years mingling with the ghosts of my ancestors had been fascinating and all-encompassing but if I’m honest, the idea of finally sharing something so personal with the world was more than slightly daunting. I shouldn’t have worried - it turned out to be a truly special evening and I’m incredibly grateful to all those who filled that awe-inspiring theatre to the brim and were so generous with their feedback. Obviously with the pandemic, the next V&A talk that had been scheduled for April this year was postponed - as were various West Coast book events - but the lack of travel has opened up opportunities too. I’d barely even heard of a #jewelrywebinar six months ago, let alone attended one - now I think they can be great - an ingenious way to learn and share knowledge without having to jump on a plane, train or the underground!
