Inspiration and the Cartiers: Never Copy, Only Create

- I used to ask my grandfather, Jean-Jacques Cartier, how he found the #inspiration for his pieces. "Well that's hard to explain!" he would laugh. "There's no magic answer - I don't know where the inspiration is going to come from, it just comes. Like that vase over there," he pointed at a glass vase on an old Chinese table in his sitting room "now perhaps you see a vase, but that elegant curve there - I see a pair of earrings in that." Later, he would show me other important sources of inspiration used by not only him but his ancestors also- everything from books, to buildings to plants in the garden. Generally the idea was that everything around one could and should be used for inspiration except for existing jewellery: "Never Copy, Only Create" was the Cartiers' motto. Because, as effortless as they may seem, those glorious jewels weren't envisaged out of thin air - "everything comes from what has gone before," my grandfather’s father Jacques Cartier used to say to his young apprentice designers.
