    Welcome to Peterson Family Farm. On this TH-cam channel, we plan to show viewers what happens on a real life family farm in Kansas. From working with animals, to planting seeds, to harvesting grain, to putting up hay, to fixing equipment, you'll get to see what farming is like! Our farm is a 5th generation farm started in 1882 by our great great grandparents. We grow wheat, corn, soybeans, milo, sunflowers, and forages and we feed about 1,000 head of cattle. To learn more about it, watch our channel intro video here: • Welcome to Our New You...

    I was always told Kansas was flat, until I moved my daughter, son-in-law and grandson to Denver 5 years ago. Drove I-70 east to west, Kansas City is around 950 feet elevation and Denver (the mile high city). Pretty straight road, but the 27' Penske truck and trailer had it's tongue hanging out when we got to Denver! Really enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing them as well as your Christian faith. Loved all 3 combines going in the earlier videos! Worked on a 6620 in the mid '80's and early '90's.

      Kansas is nowhere near the flattest state, going down I70 you only saw a little bit of what the state has to offer

    Is milo a good market crop and what is it mostly used for? I remember wheat stubble as being difficult to breakdown and decompose, is that a problem for future crops planted after the milo crop? Once again, enjoyed the video...

      Here in Kansas, we are no-till and feel like the more residue the better. Milo is used for nearly all the same purposes as corn.

    It does seem so hot there in Kansas now for you to be planting now in summer, but am glad you can get away with doing it every year and making it profitable! That makes a lot of planting and harvesting most of the year, except winter, of course! Love your videos and learn a lot!

    saw a case ih 7120 combine harvesting milo down my road today. Over here milo is planted in March and harvested in July and early August then the stalks are disked down a couple times and the milo will regrow and act as a cover crop for the rest of the year. Anyway great video and I really like your Kubota.☺

    When I was farming in Travis County, Texas, we could never raise fall Milo because of midge. They would blast out the heads in swarms. Do you have insect control issues with double cropping?

    I planted some double crop milo after oats here in NE Oklahoma on July 9 this year and some of it has sprouted. We recieved a 3/10ths and a4 tenths rain in the first week after planting.Do you guys bale the stalks after harvest and will the plan to be back to wheat?

    • @petersonfamilyfarm1778
      @petersonfamilyfarm1778  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have found that wheat after milo isn't the best rotation. We do not bale the stalks as we like the residue. Best to double crop once and then let the soil rest before planting again the next spring.

    Is there a particular reason that you dont bale your straw?

    • @petersonfamilyfarm1778
      @petersonfamilyfarm1778  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We usually do, this year we came across more hay from other places, so we had no need for the straw. It is just as valuable to us as residue and organic matter on the soil than in bales.
