Low is one of the few analysts that actually understands how defense works. Fans seem to forget that if you are 7'2 you will not have the centre of gravity like a 6'6 guard so defending a tween tween guard is almost impossible
The problem with Rudy is he’s like a lockdown corner in the NFL like a Jalen Ramsey. You’re not gunna see or hear him a lot during the game because the qb is just not going to throw that way, but what you will see is the occasional 40 yard bomb thrown over him or him getting mossed over. It’s the same with Rudy where if Rudy is roaming the paint, players are not going go in it. The stats are there that whatever team Rudy is on the defense is always top tier but you never hear that but what you do hear is Luka hitting a game winner on him, Terrence Mann dropping 40 on his head top.
Legit bro. All that talk was “ohhhhhh, look how cool Luka’s step back was, wow”, and not realizing the closeness of the games and how much Rudy was still impacting even with it being a bad matchup. Personally I recognize the fact that Rudy is an all time defender I just think it’s his offensive game that severely limits him and his team, outside of right under the hoop he really can’t score (which normal for big men) but even then he’s offense isn’t that good in the paint and a lot of times it turns into a 4 on 5 when his team has the ball

Calling Gobert a team defender when he spent basically his whole career on *ABYSMAL* teams where he was the only interior OR perimeter defense is crazy. Guys were routinely walking to the rim, which is why there were so many clips of him struggling to guard the three ball because the Jazz’s defense (which was top 3 like every year) relied on “walk to the rim and run into the 7 footer” which even remained the case when his team had to guard 5 out.

Jure holiday, Bam, Caruso, Smart, Brooks, mobley, lu Dort, all should be talked about more for there switching versatility and actually impact than the anchoring on one end of the floor
Rudy could have 10 dpoys, we’re not too obtuse to not understand that there are other better all time defenders than him. No need to go on slander campaign to do so. Cause if Bam had 4-5 dpoys, y’all would be doing the same thing to him.
He’s literally every 90s big man lol , be a good rim protector and be food on the perimeter but back then bigs never got exposed on defense cuz it was frowned open to not feed the post with a mismatch instead of just attacking the hit from a switch
This past year with the T-Wolves was the only time he had sufficient defenders guarding the perimeter to help him. He didn't have great perimeter defenders on Utah and was still carrying their defense to the top of the NBA. Royce O'Neal, D-mitch, and Mike Conley wasn't getting it done. And questioning Rudy's ability to protect the rim is the dumbest thing you can do. The one elite part of his defense is rim protection and paint defense. His perimeter defense is another story, but Gil saying Rudy allows too many points in the paint screams "I don't watch hoops fr"
It's a stupid argument of course he won for defensive player of the year awards. He's playing in era where the NBA doesn't value defense. @@crepinhauser5274 defending the paint yes he was nice just like Rudy but no one calls him trash defensively or question his 4xDPOY. He couldn't guard perimeter guys outside the paint
The Rudy Gobert topic is simple. In the regular season, he looks good and his weaknesses do not get exposed because opposing teams are not putting in a full hand plane. Once you get your the playoffs, what you are and are not good at, adjustments are made by the other team. The problem with Gobert is his lack of offensive game and inability to defend in space is magnified by 100 because everybody watched the playoffs. The Mavs bigs could stay in the paint all series against Gobert because of his limited offensive game. That played a huge part in Dallas winning three WCFs.
McCants the most underrated and hated host on all podcasts combined. He be speaking from a good standpoint and what me, myself, even others agree w. Gil’s Arena need him 💯
Man, I hate that they have me out here defending Rudy. I don't even like Rudy, but Low was right in everything he said. I wish Rashad would have stayed on point.
I think with Rudy… his lack of offensive capabilities overshadows his whole defensive aspect. He came into the league being an RIM PROTECTOR so if you ever had high ass expectations for him to now shifting into a all around defender or just having mid perimeter defense is entirely unrealistic
I think Dwight said it best, altering shots is what defines a great center in todays game. Rudy only agreed upon skill among NBA fans is altering shots because of his height. People need to get off the 4 DPOY logic because ironically ain’t never heard DPOY count ever matter in the GOAT defender debate.
More people gotta preach how it’s different year to year. That example about Dwight playing in the early 2000s was spot on, bc he wouldn’t have won DPOY but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t DPOY those years he got them. But you have to look at everything not just “how many blocks” or bc “he’s elite”.
It was significantly easier to play good defense 20 years ago compared to now. Less talent in the league, worse shot selection, worse spacing, worse shooting, worse coaching, more contact allowed etc. It's no wonder teams back then struggled to score 90 points... It's not because the 2000s coincidentally had every team with multiple DPOY level players... It's just that it was easier to play defense... Even with that in mind, i saw the likes of Tim Duncan get lit up by Kobe, Steve Nash, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Dirk and Amare multiple times from 2004 to 2011 in the Playoffs... He even lost a series against Zach Randolph and Mike Conley when his team won 60 games in the regular season... Yet, i never heard Duncan is overrated and exposed defensively because of it, despite playing in much more defensively friendly eras. Sometimes you just have to be realisfic. Duncan and Gobert are both GOAT level paint protectors, but outside of that, they will have trouble guarding absolutely all-time great perimeter players. It's absurd to think guys like that can switch onto an all star level guard and not get blown by or crossed for a jumper. That's to be expected. If teams are playing run and gun basketball with lineups where 4 players can dribble and 5 players can shoot, believe me even Tim Duncan is getting lit up in these games... Because i've seen him get lit up in his prime. Amare averaged 37 against him in 2005. They only won that series because Phoenix couldn't defend and Spurs shot 42% from 3pt. Next year, Dirk lit him up despite playing with Dampier and Josh Howard and Devin Harris who couldn't shoot. In 2008, CP3 was dancing on him, took him to 7 games with a cast of role players etc.
The reason why nobody considers him a good defender is because in the playoffs teams don't put schemes to try get him out the play they scheme to take advantage of his weakness which are very glaring you never heard a team say yeah there whole team offense was designed to attack dwight howard, ben wallace, camby, draymond etc. and that the difference when those guys switched onto you your asking for a rescreen when rudy is in front its an instant iso
That is bullshit. Someone put up a clip showing that perimeter players shot 7-24 in iso possessions against Rudy during the playoffs. You can not just "instantly iso" against Rudy.
My only gripe with Rudy is, why in important games especially most recently the USA-France game is he on the bench. Like is he that much of a liability offensively and on the wings that it exceeds his defensive prowess?
Go see the game where he played. Yes, teamed up with Wemby, it was a turnover machine in a team plagued with turnovers already, Lessort was way more regular, a better passer and played better teamwork, so the option was between him and Wemby, which was somehow a no brainer. Not saying he wouldn't have worked in some other scheme, but in Collet's schemes he did not do well.
How, lol? Since 2017 he's been consistently the most impactful defender in the league according to multiple data sources. That's 8 seasons in a row. Marcus Smart winning one is a bigger travesty than Gobert winning 4 out of 8.

There’s an argument to be made this year about him not deserving it, but can we talk about how he was ROBBED in 2022? The Utah jazz defensive rating was over 120 with him off the floor, that was worst in the league. With him on they had a top 4 defense iirc. And like you saw in the video, his dfg% at the rim was UNDER 50%. At the RIM! With the jazz entire gameplay being to purposefully allow people to get in the paint because everyone was scared to take shots on Gobert. Still so bad that they gave it to Marcus smart who wasn’t even the most impactful defender on his own team
Imagine if Rudy Gobert played in the era of defense where when a big got beat they could just foul really hard AND wasn't expected to have ANY offensive impact. Like Gobert finds minutes in todays league with Dennis Rodman level offense and people trash on his defense? Imagine if he got to play in a league where bigs weren't expected to do anything on offense outside of 5-10 feet
Ever since that playoff series jazz vs clippers in 2021 that’s where the hate just got out of hand bcuz of Terrence Mann going off and “exposed” Rudy even tho Rudy had no choice but to play up bcuz they’re perimeter defenders kept getting beat
Low is one of the few analysts that actually understands how defense works.
Fans seem to forget that if you are 7'2 you will not have the centre of gravity like a 6'6 guard so defending a tween tween guard is almost impossible
They hate Gobert so much, they’ll say he’s 7’10 by the end of the segment
💯 good comp and analogy
I thought he would be like Champ Bailey, or Troy Polamalu.
Legit bro.
All that talk was “ohhhhhh, look how cool Luka’s step back was, wow”, and not realizing the closeness of the games and how much Rudy was still impacting even with it being a bad matchup. And ofc, lo and behold, Luka actually falls short against a better team, and that impact was severely overrated
@@Jonathan-A.C.or how about the fact that rudy isn’t a smart defender, is slow footed and block thirsty. All he had to do was chase luka off the 3 point line. Dwight was an offensive focal point other than the other 2
McCants cooking up a valid argument? Never thought I would see the day.
“His offense isn’t that good in the paint.”
Is he not consistently one of the most efficient finishers in the league.
On how many attempts though? Volume also matters here

It would make more sense to compare Gobert situation to Mutombo even if Mutumbo didn't play for his national team either. They pretty much have the same stats but Mutombo has more blocks so more highlights. lol I hate to break it to Dwight but literally every defensive big that shot blocks is a help defender and in Dwight’s prime years he wasn’t an insane pick and roll defender either
Been waiting on this one since I saw the video
Weren't strong centers exploiting Wemby's strength and weight deficits?
I love to hear facts!!! Most of these players talking points come from clicks they are a part of, jealousy and politics!
Rudy’s question is not protecting the rim. He does that very well. His question is being able to play on the perimeter & having any type of offense.
Rudy in Utah single handily made them a top 5 defense every year

I think Lexi actually kept saying the best point, but nobody was hearing her. It’s not that Rudy is a bad defender, he’s great actually. A lot of people just don’t believe he’s 4x DPOY level of a defender. The best defender in the game can’t be strictly a rim protector alone in today’s NBA.

There is nothing wrong about what Dwight said players old and new say the same thing he’s really good just not great

Daniel Li had the perfect video on Rudy, he made fantastic points and it feel fair. I'm not sire why I don't like Rudy BUT I understand the situation.
His problem is offense, and defensive versatility. Terrance Mann lit him up from that corner 3 in the Utah series a few years ago, making Gobert a defensive liability. He's got stone hands offensively, so he straight up sucks as an offensive big
I would argue that the biggest issue with Gobert is that his team's over-relying on him defensively to make up for his lack of value offensively.
That's what he's supposed to do ? He a rim protector and they have two ways 💯

This is the recommended way to watch gil's arena. Please continue to let us hate watch through your eyes 🙏🏿
Where is that shirt from👀? I wanna see the entire thing😂
So he’s getting taxed for using his height to play defense? 😂
@@palmpalm5663they do that any player they don’t like
More people gotta preach how it’s different year to year.
Don’t call Jaden McDaniels “JMac” bro that’s Jordan MacLaughlin
I thought the same thing! 😂😂😂😂😂
Rudy is the same rim protection as AD. And AD has to score and defend the perimeter
We done with the Rudy’s 😂
The reason why nobody considers him a good defender is because in the playoffs teams don't put schemes to try get him out the play they scheme to take advantage of his weakness which are very glaring you never heard a team say yeah there whole team offense was designed to attack dwight howard, ben wallace, camby, draymond etc. and that the difference when those guys switched onto you your asking for a rescreen when rudy is in front its an instant iso
Jaylen brown was attacking draymond in the finals. As for the other guys, hunting mismatches on the perimeter wasn't as normalized as today
That is bullshit. Someone put up a clip showing that perimeter players shot 7-24 in iso possessions against Rudy during the playoffs. You can not just "instantly iso" against Rudy.
@@lildroptop4178The Celtics were getting Draymond away from the rim so they could attack, just like the Mavs did with Rudy.
This is the only time i’ll agree with dwight howard.
