  • In this video, I analyse data collected from the Duna System and then try and come up with a theory on its history.

    I never see too many people talking about Ike. It's such an odd shaped moon, it's like a 20 sided die or something. I always like going there. Pretty easy to get to, you can catch an encounter back to Kerbin from right there without having to orbit Duna, you can do it fairly cheap, and landing on Ike is always an adventure.

      Idk, to me Ike seems like going to the mun or to Dres with extra steps. Dres and the mun each have features to differentiate themselves from other planets, but Ike seems identical to the mun to me, so I’ve only visited Ike twice.

    A satellite as large as Ike most likely formed as an independent body that was captured by Duna through a collision - not the same as how the Moon came to be, Ike probably would have much less of Duna's material incorporated in it. That's how Pluto and Charon came to be, and given the huge mass ratio of this system I think that's the most likely explanation.

    I gotta be real pimp I don’t think Duna is tectonically dead. Ike has to be pumping out some pretty powerful tidal heating effects given how large it is as compared to Duna, and that atmospheric pressure and temperature at the equator is well high enough to sustain exposed liquid water. Plus those bigass ice caps a good chunk above the freezing point of co2

    my most insane theory I could come up with, Duna was a kerbin-like planet in another solar system, A few million years ago, Kerbol formed, the other solar system system passed by Kerbol, causing chaos to unleash, During this chaos, Duna was stolen by Kerbol, along with Dres, Eeloo, and the binary system of Val and Minmus, Val and Minmus were separated by Jool, one being brought in because of Tylo's gravity, and one being ejected and eventually influenced by the Mun's gravity, One day, a moon of Jool was ejected, it was the size of Moho, This moon crashed into duna's surface, wiping all life from it, The debris from that became 2 moons, Ike, and Gilly, Gilly was under the influence of Ike's gravity, so it was flung out, passing Kerbin and The Mun on its way, being captured into Eve's orbit.

    • @Joshs4stro

      the SENTINEL telescope can also find asteroids near a planet's orbit, and I think Eve should be no different

    Well done, one of your random video seems to have gone well with the algorithm.
    Imo most of the small planets that orbit biggers ones could have possibly been asteroids from the asteroid belt that hit each other, wondered for ages before being captured by bigger planets (i.e. gilly, possiblt minmus, Ike and most of Jool's satellites)

  • @Joshs4stro
    @Joshs4stro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    MY CRAZED THEORY:
    Ike could have been very volcanically active, with a moon-wide lava ocean covering any impact craters, only recently cooling down enough. Maybe because it was once too close to Duna and was being heated up by the gravitational forces, meaning it could have been formed outside of Duna and was later captured by Duna in a close pass of it. Possibly from the Dres system as both have a similar smooth surface with light and dark grey spots. Ike could have been formed by a collision between Dres and a now long gone planet with the remnants of that collision being in the Drestroid belt.
    So the timeline goes like this: Dres and the mysterious planet collide. Ike is created in the blobs of molten debris and is flung out of the Dres system leaving the Drestroid belt behind. Ike makes multiple close passes of Duna before finally capturing, giving Duna a slightly eccentric orbit and Ike a very toasty volcanic surface. Ike is pushed out to a relatively higher orbit of Duna and as the surface cools down no impact crators from before the capture remain.
    EDIT:
    The planetary collision also gave Dres its highly inclined and eccentric orbit.

    • @AstroChara
      @AstroChara ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with the lava ocean part, but honestly the rest kind of escapes me. I'm kind of used to actual planet formation theories though so I guess I'm used to searching for the simplest explanation possible.

    • @Joshs4stro
      @Joshs4stro ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AstroChara My original logic was Dres and Ike look similar lol.
      Dres also isnt an asteroid and is a planet, as it has cleared its orbit as theres no asteroids between Jool and Duna, with the only asteroid belt in the game between Kerbin and Duna. Making it's eccentric and inclined orbit rather unusual, which could be explained by either interference from Jool or it being hit with enough force to change it's orbit significantly.

    • @AstroChara
      @AstroChara ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Joshs4stro I do think it’s less of that Dres cleared its orbit or not, and more of how the asteroid belt was simply omitted because there’s not much use to it gameplay-wise when the asteroids are already supplied by the near-Kerbin asteroids. Its orbit also seems normal enough for me, with the eccentricity being higher than Ceres or Vesta, but still lower than, Pallas, and inclination being smaller than any of the three objects I mentioned earlier.

    • @Joshs4stro
      @Joshs4stro ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AstroChara but compared to the other planets in the game (except moho and eeloo, who hasn’t cleared its orbit making it a dwarf planet) its orbit is very different, and there are no objects or asteroids between jool and duna making it by definition a planet (because it’s round and has cleared its orbit) the planetary collision would explain ike, dres’s highly unusual orbit, the dres ring/ drestroid belt.
      but ike could also very well just be a captured asteroid from the belt between kerbin and duna, and dres’s orbit was influenced by jool or some other object.
      or even dres was once a moon of jool and was slung out by tylo or laythe
      or dres was also an asteroid in the belt between kerbin and duna and got a gravity assist from kerbin or duna

    Duna is Mars, and like Mars, it's moon (Mars actually has 2 moons) is supposed to be a captured object, just like Phobos and Deimos are thought to be captured objects. Deimos (the one they are almost certain is a captured object) also orbits ALMOST in a synchronous orbit.
    Also, nitpicky moment: Geo = Earth. You can't have a Geostationary orbit in KSP as they aren't around Earth. They are synchronous orbits or "Keostationary" for Kerbin specifically, which I guess would make Duna's a "Duostationary" orbit.
