There are mods that allow for both extra planets, planetoids, dwarf planets, large asteroids, etc, and extra orbiting moons, such as Kopernicus and Extra Planets Pack, not to mention certain packs that overhaul the Kerbol system or recreate the Solar System that Humanity calls home. And besides those 2 examples, there's also Interstellar bodies/systems packs, and it's not to say Matt hasn't used them before, although only sparingly.

Stumbled upon this by accident. Have few questions: -You start your gravity turn on takeoff quite early and in the upper atmosphere there's still air drag (burn) I always thought that's quite wasteful in terms of deltaV. Doesn't the drag play a huge role here ? -Why not use Mun gravity assist to get out of Kerbins orbit ? I allways thought that's quite a cheap way to increase speed. Used to play quite a lot, starting from 0.13 version if I remember. Back in those days getting to orbit was quite tough due to structural issues- the rockets wobbled like hell and there was quite a management. Plus no orbital calculators, had to do calculations using 3rd party solutions and eyeball the angles in map and hope to get in to sphere of influence - fun times 😅
I just landed the Kerbal X on both Mun and Minmus in one launch. Only modification was to drain the monopropellant. Version 1.0.5. Took about a half dozen tries and wound up with 8m/s to spare. You know you're on the right track if you can get a Mun encounter prior to jettisoning the main booster.
Wow... Broken right hand.... Ouch! Thanks for pushing through and getting the commentary done on this. It's a fascinating mission and really pushes the boundaries on utilizing gravity assists. I tried to do a couple of missions in my career mode using assists, but then realized that it was just far more simpler to build for direct transfers.
first time I ever used a gravity assist was after a solar swandive rescue (17 kerbals in an encounter transfer!), burned for a straight in Kerbal re-entry, ran out of fuel... right on course for a Mun polar slingshot, which put me on a return trajectory around Minmus, aerobrake around Kerbin, another encounter with the Mun, which put me into a suicide re-entry and parachute landing on the KSC launchpad!
fun fact. kerbals have always effected the mass of the ship. or at least the center of gravity. i have tiny planes from years back with nothing but a command seat, and they lose stability WITHOUT a kerbal in them. they had to be specifically designed so the kerbals would move the COG in line with the COT.
I never knew that the Kerbal X was such a good ship! I could only make it to Minmus and the Mun, also I have an idea for a ksp craft, can you a big hotel on Duna??? Like the one on Minmus? I want to see what you can do!
My first gravity assist was pretty much the same. I built a rocket for the campaign's first mun landing and when i got there i realized i perhaps had enough fuel to go visit minmus as well. so i did. I didn't have enough delta v to get back from minmus but i managed to get a grav assist off the mun to dip me into the atmosphere. best mission i have flown.

Bradley: Are ya winning, son?

Matt Lowne: figures out gravity assists by messing around with maneuver nodes

I enjoyed this video with a nice spot of tea and some crumpets. Jolly well done Matt

This little maneuver's gonna cost us 30 years...
These are the best of the best Kerbals, they signed up for the sake of science and sometimes science requires you to wait for years. Plus in my head cannon that are green because they are plant like and absorb sunshine for energy so they not hungry
Matt could probably make an interstellar mission look easier than a Minmus mission based off of this video alone. Would've been more impressed if it was an Eve mission including getting back, lol.
Oh lol, Matt making Kerbals sit in command pods for years...
