  • Mass transit is on everyone in Middle Tenneessee's minds right now as Nashville closes in on it's May 1st referendum. We talked to some of the people involved in the start of rail service in Metro Nashville former congressman Bob Clement, former mayor of Lebanon Don Fox, current mayor of Wilson County Randall Hutto, and current mayor of Nashville David Briley. They gave us their thoughts on Nashville's only existing commuter rail line, The Music City Star.

"CSX wouldn't cooperate." In other words, CSX was saying, our needs to make money is more important than what the people of Middle Tennessee needs for their population growth.

Yeah, that's essentially it. I mean, I guess I understand. They're a business. They need to watch their bottom line. Seems like a missed positive PR opportunity, though. As well as a missed opportunity to be, as Bob Clement puts it, a good corporate citizen

@@5folds389 It goes past that, a few billionaires like the Koch's are invested in CSX and other highway companies and are making money on this transportation mess. They even used their money for donations to church's to spread their lies about rail service. Other railroads work with passenger carriers. Improvements for passenger benefit all trains. With PSR railroading many routes now will be abandoned by CSX and other railroads very shortly.

I think it would be cool if they could connect the MCS to the Amtrak city of New Orleans station in Memphis so people could catch Amtrak without having to drive or take a bus.

They should buy their own tracks, it’s expensive, but it will definitely pay off. Plus, we need to connect Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville again. They are our biggest cities in Tennessee they’ll bring the most income.

Wrong, tracks are taxed and taxes are added to use taxes for other forms of transportation. Music City Star is a tiny operation. Unlimited money including railroad tax money is spend on other forms of transportation. While people like the Koch's lobby against rail. So they can keep the profits rolling in for them. Many lines will be abandoned by CSX under this PSR program soon. Just a few billionaires control much of the government and plans for our country. I do agree with you.

Just the way the Koch's want it. They make money on all this. More traffic? The answer is always unlimited funding of more roads, which bring more traffic.

OMG it’s so funny seeing old Metra cars especially cabs in service. Do the bathrooms work in those cars? Metra has disabled bathrooms in these old cars. Also, they need to buy some ADA accessible cars with wheel chair lifts.

So true. I wonder if they have the power to seize the property alongside the rails to build what they need. It’s crazy that CSX was handed the entire New York Central Tracks on a silver platter. Not sure that included grand central terminal. But CSX is famous for being real assholes when it comes to commuter rail.

@@Harveycartoonlvr11 Not true, ridership is held back by lack of service and connections. Chicago is only for the super rich that work downtown, to go anywhere across the region you have to change trains, stations across town. When you drive you don't go downtown first! It's a old system with newer cars. For the super rich to commute downtown and the getto people to go out and clean their houses in the afternoon, watch the kids and walk the dogs. Has nothing to do with population. Nashville's issue is government is controlled by the billionaire Koch people.
