    Interesting thought KC. I used to be hung up on it, but the more I learn about music I realize Gospel music has been a mixture of sacred and secular styles from the beginning. I think culturally speaking, some song mixtures are more exceptable than others. Personally, I blend in songs from every genre in our worship sets a lot!
    Every once in a while I will get a side eye from someone in the pews when I go just a bit too far, ie; Flash light from Confunktion, or the riff from Stevie Wonder, Living for the City. Nonetheless, all glory to God!

    Nice call out on Udo! Like seeing this 👍
    There's no surprise that the progressions are similar and potentially invoke thoughts of other songs. That's not a problem nor does it represent some misuse or theft from another song. Rather, it's about the melody and the feel that will make it distinct, which is a really great thing to keep top of mind. The choices we make are informed by what we hear and connect with... we can't choose anything else! 😁
    Great job, KC

    Once a upon a time, I had a problem with it but as after playing for nearly a decade on the piano, I’ve understood that there’s only so many progressions you can do. Gospel borrowed from RnB a lot and vice versa! A lot of RnB singers and producers came from church. Just has to make sense

    Music evokes emotion..
    so it depends on what emotion is being evoked.. This is why one must be sensitive to the Holy Spirit during worship... you wouldn't play hard rock.. as long as it's not creating an inappropriate emotion in the service... it's ok..
    But remember when playing R&B in service and you're trying to set the atmosphere and bring ppl to Christ, there will be someone who knows the tune is from a secular song, thus making it harder to set the atmosphere for true worship for that individual..
    All music is not good music.. imagine having someone play a scene from Chucky during altar call.

    Progressions are progressions. There’s a 2-5-1 in almost every song. Words is something different. Everything is being recycled, that’s why you have the cats like you that can still expand and create an atmosphere no matter what.

    God created everything… “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” Man put titles and categories. If something was used for something other than God’s Glory… we’re not the one who took it, we are just repurposing it back to what it was intended for.

    A chord progression is a chord progression. The cadence is what gives gospel music it’s vibe. If the R&B song had flopped instead of being a hit and not been on anybody’s radar, would that make the chord progression safe to use in church? What if your congregation is mixed and composed of people that don’t listen to R&B music? Does that cause them to be convicted if they love the music, enjoy the worship and have no connection to the source because they’re not familiar with it to begin with? Change the rhythm and timing or any other creative techniques to make it original and you’re fine. Besides, all this does is expose the fact that church folk (musicians and congregants alike) love listening to music other than gospel.

    • @SmallAxeMP

      Don't think? Nothing is wrong with it. If something is wrong with ut something is wrong with it then something is wrong with all the chords on the instruments, the tones and all.

    Lucifer was in charge of the Worship, originally in Heaven and so now as satan, it longs for obedience as worship, in this fallen world. I Believe that our ABBA FATHER LONGS FOR WORSHIPPERS, WHO WORSHIP IN THE HOLY GHOST, SPEAKING TRUTH, FROM THE WORD OF GOD. This is Received by SINGING IN THE SPIRIT, TO FAITH INSTILLING TUNES. FINALLY, AN ACT OF FAITH IS REQUIRED, TO BRING YOUR FAITH TO LIFE. I GIVE ALL GLORY TO MY ABBA FATHER IN ALL THINGS AND FOR ALL THINGS.

  • @SmallAxeMP
    @SmallAxeMP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you think something is wrong with it then something is wrong with all the chords, runs, sounds and instruments in music. Instruments are made by non Christians and Chords are formed everywhere in this world and not by Christian musicians alone.

  • @tonylancer7367
    @tonylancer7367 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It really depends on the type of gospel you are talking about. The more "modern/contemporary" gospel music will be influenced by what those singers/musicians grew up listening to. Kirk Franklin and Tye are easy examples of this ("Stomp" with references to Notorious BIG phrases; Tye in his GA days mixing elements of rock, R&B etc). Unless you are strictly traditional (sticking to hymns, played on a single instrument etc), then there's a chance you will be influenced and bring it into gospel.
    Case in point: I was today year's old when I realised the vamp in John P. Kee's "Rain On Us" is actual from the song "She's a Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)" by Carl Carlton, and that's a R&B/Funk record! John P. Kee must have enjoyed it so much in his younger years that he brought it in "Rain On Us".

    God has given every Creature an Creation its sound an 👂 ear, even Water,Wind and Rock, all 🎶 🎵 sound/music in the earth comes from God, every situation, has a sound track given by God.

    You really don't have a choice whether or not to use R&B chords and progressions.
    After hundreds of years of music, and only 12 notes, whatever you put together. . . is already out there somewhere LOL
    The only thing I can't agree with : is what Dottie Peoples did with Michael Jackson's song!! She completely stole the music from "Beat It" and used it as her vamp lol, lol, lol, lol, That's a no no LOL
