Rodney is a super humble and cool guy, KC! Not sure if people knew it, but if anyone is a late bloomer on piano, Bruce Hornsby did not start piano until he was 17 years old, yet he remains one of the most important pianists of the 21st century, as he established a sound that is his own. It is a clever blending of the Americana side of jazz that you hear in some of Keith Jarrett's work, a big influence on him, as well as that pure cinematic western landscape that goes back to Dave Grusin and even Aaron Copeland. I don't think you can ever go wrong with that sound as most of us grew up loving all those motion pictures that used this kind of style on many of their soundtracks to better express the emotion of the stories being told. Because of that, it remains a kind of pleasant, thought provoking, and nostalgic mood woven into us without us even realizing it.❤😊

Yes sirrrrr Bruce Hornsby, Thats it! Thats why your chord structure speaks to me. Again, i am not a pianist; Im a guitarist. I was raise in a gospel home but listen to music like Journey, Air Supply, Bruce Hornsby and the Range and Steely Dan which wasn't popular in my demographic and culture when i was younger. I just loved music that spoke to me and music like Bruce Hornsbys did. So, when I came across Mr. East's playing i was like "man, i love his chord structure" but, i didn't know why until now!

I remember listening to Rodney East & Jason Tyson on youtube about 8 years ago, I kept seeing comments that Bruce Hornsby was a influence. I started studying his music and I became a big fan (I've been to two concerts). Bruce Hornsby has inspired alot of gospel musicians. I went to a workshop back in September, I got a chance to meet Joseph Pryor (Very cool guy) he said he studied Bruce Hornsby and a lot of Baltimore's Keyboard Players studied him too.

Interestingly I have found drop 2 easier to just feel versus thinking too hard about it. I never think about dropping the 2. It's more about the high (melody) note being a 3rd away from the bass note. When I first figured it out by ear, I thought of it more like a major sus 2 chord, with the major 3rd as the bass. Obviously minor chords can also be drop 2 so I i developed that a little later. So anyway I kind of relate to Rodney not knowing what it is, when I first heard the concept of drop 2, I was like "oh.... That's what it's called"😂

What’s funny about the drop two is I also see it as a #5 depending on the mood!!! When he stretch the A# chord it became a #5 depending on the context!!!

Great stuff but these are not drop 2 voicings, they are sus 2 or maybe add 9 if playing the full chord. Drop 2 normally means taking the second highest note and dropping it to the bottom of the voicing.
CMaj add2 is C+D+ *E* +G ...then drop the *E* to the bottom??? *E* is the second highest note... But glad you relearned what Drop 2 is... These are clearly drop 2 chords...

The only thing I don’t like with the name of “drop 2” is that it doesn’t go along with the rest of what’s consistent with musical numbers. It should be called “drop 3” but hey 🤷🏽♂️
I agree…. The only issue is - sometimes the second highest note isn’t the 3rd scale degree… Drop 2 works for any chord, you’re dropping the second highest note from the top down to the bottom… so it doesn’t matter what note or scale degree it is… Much love ☀️💚
