    Secondary dominants is the technical name for this

    • @PlayitonPan
      @PlayitonPan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Matthew Loupe it’s only a secondary dominant if the chord you’re travelling to is also a dominant.
      In this video, when the destination chords that she was travelling to are not dominants, it makes the passing chord primary dominant (rather than secondary).
      That being said, thank you for reminding us about secondary dominants (V over V) as the trick in this video also works for those (destination dominants) as well.

      UrbanSmash SoulJah Accoring to Berklee press ´Arranging for large Jazz ensembles’ : A Secondary dominant seventh chords mvoves to any diatonic chord other than the I chord.

    • @PlayitonPan
      @PlayitonPan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Marc Ilunga Thanks for this. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information as to the exact definition of a secondary dominant.
      Here’s another, “Secondary dominant is a term which refers to any dominant chord within the chord progression which is not derived from a key signature of a chord progression. Therefore, every secondary dominant chord is a non-diatonic one. This means that, for example, in a diatonic major scale, any dominant chord which is not the fifth chord of a first chord falls into a category of secondary dominant chords. If the chord progression consists of Dm, G7, and C chords, then the seventh chord (G7) is a "standard" dominant chord. If, however, the chord progression consists of Dm, D7, G7, and C chords, then the D7 chord is a secondary dominant since the D7 chord cannot be derived from a C major scale.”

      the clue of passing chords is to use the quint of the endchord. u can even go further to use the quint of the quint of the endchord in this case C -> Bm7b5 -> E7b9 -> Am7
      another hint is to use the tritone substitution of the E7b9 that will be a Bb6(9) or a Bb13

    Great lesson. Cool trick, very applicable in many settings.
    True inversion happens in the bass, Here is what I mean - she played C-E7-Amin-F-D7-G, with inversions (on the passing chords - which are usually in the bass-very bluesy) would be: C-G#/E7-Amin-F-F#/D7-G -- the 3rd (or second note in a triad) is in the bass (lowest note) in 1st inversion.
    Another way to look at what she played (without passing chords is: I-vi-IV-V (C-am-F-G - lower case means the chord minor), with the passing chords this is: I-III7-vi-IV-II7-V.
    Sorry to geek out.

    • @superchickenx11
      @superchickenx11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A secondary dominant IS a 7th chord, you wouldn't "add the 7". In the video, she plays a C major chord (C E G) and she's moving to an A minor chord (A C E) so you're adding the secondary dominant of A minor, which is E7. (E G#/Ab B D)
      If you didn't add the 7, you'd be playing an (E G#/Ab B) which would be an E major chord.
