Just did my first oil change on my '24 Tacoma last week, was trying to get it done at 1000, but ended up closer to 1500, still better than the manufacturer suggestion of 10,000 miles... sheesh.
The oil that comes with these new engines is break in oil and formulated so that all components wear in a predetermined pattern. By prematurely changing the fluids, you pretty much will glaze all of the mating metals. Read your manuals and do the research before you make your own maintenance plan.
When doing oil change on any of my vehicles, I always leave the oil fill cap on to prevent exactly your situation. Once it gets flowing, then get up and take oil fill cap off.👍🏻 Nice Tacoma.
You’re the 1st one to do an oil change video on the new Tacoma, thanks! You learn stuff the first couple times you change it. Please go to Harbor Freight & buy a 3/8 torque wrench so you can use the correct 14mm socket. A 1/2 torque wrench is more for torquing wheel lug nuts. That part hurt my ocd more than the oil mess. 😂
@@BrokenMachine85 The drain plug should only need 30 foot/lbs. That’s what I set for my 21 Tacoma. My 3/8 Icon torque wrench goes from 20-100 ft/lbs. and the cheap 3/8 Pittsburg one goes 5-80ft/lbs. either will work. I just checked, 40Nm = 29.5 ft/lbs. Thanks again for doing the video though.
I did my first change a few weeks ago at about 750 miles lol. I was actually considering trying to make a video like this because there was nothing on TH-cam at the time. Kudos for actually pulling it off. Almost the same exact thing happened to me with the mess! I even left my cap and dipstick on to try and give myself a chance at not making a mess, but nope, it still shot outta there like a stream of hot piss 😂. Next time I’ll have a funnel ready to catch it!
Yah… the same happened to me with this oil drain… just splashing around everywhere! Note… for your next change… get oil absorbing pads & place them everywhere!
Scrab 2-by lumber can work as wheel chocks. Also, if you don’t have jack stands, shove a stack of lumber under there in case one of those black plastic ramps collapses
FU**ing OIl everywhere! That was a surprising oil deluge. I wonder if keeping the oil cover on would make the stream tamer and more manageable. Thank you for the insight and sharing.
Yep. I found leaving the oil cap on in the engine compartment of my current Tacoma to allow for a slower drain. I open it when the flow calms down. Don't feel bad BrokenMachine. I only know that because I made the same mistake! Waiting on my 24 should be any day now. Best of luck.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q Yeah I own a 2021 SR with the 2.7. Its a work horse of a motor. But still easy to work on. I do electrical work so its abused daily; but I do my own oil changes! The spin on filter is half the reason why I went with the 2TRFE over 2GRFKS
Thanks for the video. I have my stuff ready to go for my 5000 oil change. The filter I have is really small but is the same one you used. That oil came out with some force! I may put some paper towels in my pan to reduce splash.
Hi this is Ivy from Muslogy. I LOVE your TH-cam videos so much! They are impressive. Recently we are working on the products for 2024 Tacoma like armrest cover, console organizer, door handle storage box. Wondering if there is an opportunity to collaborate with you to make product review😊
4:50 that oil pan that drain sit a bit higher than the lower part of the pan. Looks like still hold about 1.5qtz of used oil in. Could be wrong I don’t know. Others that that did a great job.
THAT was a drain - Niagara Falls! Beautiful sight seeing spin on filters used again on Tacomas (judicious cardboard use). Good luck w/ the rest of the issues popping up for the new design (and better luck than the Tundra! - wow - what dumpster fire they are having)
You did the correct thing by changing the oil/filter, this flushes out most of the break in that's floating around. 600-1K miles is when to do it. Toyota says 10k miles ? they are on drugs.. Never go beyond 5k miles, period. engine longevity is a Important thing, vehicles and parts cost to damn much money. Turbo engines run hotter so changing oil every 4k -5k is best.
Certainly not a new concept. I was taught to prime filters back in 2011 for my Triumph motorcycles. Also, you’re certainly not going to ruin your engine if you don’t prime a filter. Plenty of people with high mileage engines have never primed a filter. It’s just a technique to go above and beyond with ensuring 100% proper lubrication at start up after an oil/filter change.
Its not just you i watched this video and had oil splashed all over me too... And i need ladder to reach my oil cap lol. Next time u may try lifting a but less or just not jack it up ..
Car care nut is awesome! and yes the break in oil change for a brand new car?truck. is between 500-750 miles. so glad toyota went back to spin on filters, kool!
I have a brand new taco sport also. It says 5k first oil change. Never did that 1K break in period with my 3rd gen sr5 4x4.. almost at 119k runs like new.
@@noxnyc23 stay on the proper intervals and you should be find. But please do watch the car care nut guy he’s really good. He is a certified Toyota mechanic.
@@rockkstah2550 yes I love that guy. I’m currently at 2k on my new taco . I Check the oil color it’s still new lol. I will change it at 3k 👍🏼 there was no bronze oxide taco sport when I was buying just underground and blue crush. Ended up with blue crush coz it had the most option I wanted .. congrats on your fine vehicle 👍🏼
Yea, that’s the main advantage of the fourth gen Tacoma in that it’s primarily designed and geared towards people that have never owned a truck before and are transitioning from a car to a truck that runs, drives, and interior/exterior performs like A CAR!👍🏻

Yep, such bullsh*t from them - the motivations for that are strange. Turbo engine especially as the Car Care Nut/s channel will tell you.

Nice Tacoma.
Brother this is too good! 💪 I LOVE IT. Beautiful sport in the BEST color!
The spill got me rolling 😆 I love it. I’m a huge fan of 10 qt plastic paint buckets 😎
The legend grows and I am there for it...
Honestly I think your oil change filter is one of the better ones out there because your “mistakes” will help everyone learn. I think you did great.
Got a good laugh, thanks for sharing the spill! Love your truck, the BEST color.
You're doing the right thing, in between 500 to 1k miles it's a good timing 👌.

I have a 3/8th torque wrench, but it only goes up to like 30 or 35nm.

You were right about the oil draining being hilarious, I've been there too. Good video, very enjoyable.
That underground color is sick!
It’s bronze oxide
so much for the “less mess drain pan” :-)
Interesting. Haven't seen an oil change done on the new 24 tacoma yet.

happy to see they are still using a spin on filter.
The 2.7 used a spin on, but the 3.5 used a cartridge. Toy has gone back to spin on, on every vehicle for MY25.

I saw a guy online using a solo cup with holes in the bottoms and a metal Brillo scrubber at the bottom of the cup to stop the splashing.
What oil you gonna use ?
Beautiful truck. How much did you pay for it?
Is the oil drain plug higher than the bottom of the pan ?
Wonder why they changed back to a normal oil filter........
Is there a difference in performance?
Splashing happened to me too. The fucking oil is like water so next time I am not even warming it up for long (maybe a minute or 2)
That mess you made, is how all my tacoma oil changes go and somehow it gets more messy after each oil change for me

What is the torque spec of the skid plate bolts?
use a short piece 1.5 " pvc pipe shorter that actual measurement will help alot.

shouldn't the car still be under warranty so why not get it done free at the dealer?
it takes 10 minutes to do it at home, takes hours to drive to dealer and wait.
