The one thing I’ve always admired about Leno is that he drives and enjoys everything in his collection. So many collector cars just get squirreled away in barnes and garages and never used. It’s refreshing to see a collector who isn’t afraid to take take his cars out and use them as they were intended to be used.
Plus: He buys cars to drive them - not as an investment or to brag about having the best, rarest, lowest milage concours car - although he could afford it easily, obviously.
Also, that storage has a reported tendency to destroy the engines, etcetera.

@@J.A.Smith2397 There is a man in Palmerston North, NZ who owns a Doble, as I recall. He claims, quite believably, to have surprised a few drivers at traffic lights by accelerating somewhat quicker than them🙂!

we went to car shows in LA, san diego growing up...my brother had 40 cars, etc....but LENO is so fun.....my grandpa took me to the classic shows at our local donut shop in HB, CA. so much fun and memories....THanks Leno....Oh and my wife's cousing works for LENO or used to as a valet manager....i think
In the 1960s, my neighbor had 2 - 1936 Bugatti race cars. One was red with a racing stripe. The other was covered. He also had a 1936 Bentley supercharged touring car. He drove that around town. Unfortunately, he died in 1967. His son sold the Bentley for college money but, I don't know what happened to the Bugattis. Good Memories.
They got sold for retirement money.

I saw one of these clones(?) in Orange County Ca. It was in a small exotic dealership that eventually got shut down by the Feds, go figure. The craftsmanship was amazing and I will always wonder who got that vehicle at auction - if it ever got to one.

I love Jay's passion. Even if you start off not really liking a car by the end of the video Jays sold it to you. The fact he drives these rare cars and keeps them roadworthy is incredible
The fact that he got paid 30 million a year at the height of The Tonight Show is what is incredible, and likewise, enables him to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
He has gone on record saying he doesn't like to think of himself as owning these cars. He's merely a caretaker. And wants to keep them in the best possible condition for the next caretaker.
i just hope when he inevitably passes he leaves his entire collection to making a museum of the entire history of the automobile

My favourite 'Garage' type of episode. No guests, or car companies, trying to get free advertising for their new vehicle. What a wonderful, informative episode. One of the best that Jay has ever done IMHO.

Heres an idea. Why dont you Jay go make an episode (split in a few episodes of course) on Ralph Lauren's garage like a walk around same as a lot people have done in your garage? That, would be the video of the year.

@@michaelbenardo5695these are fascinating to me because the engineering was all wrong, everything they stuck by ended up being backwards, but when set up right these cars are absolutely magical, to me it’s an evolutionary dead end in cars but such a cool one.
I love these cars. I saw a beautiful Voisin C25 once at an autoshow in Germany and it left such an impression on the young me. That was probably one of the experiences that led me to realize that automobiles can be not only well crafted, engineered or fast and loud, they can be works of art, looking like they are going 100mph while standing still. And that is something special in and of itself and its enough to justify a cars existence.
I hope you can someday find the time to go through your collection and do even a quick video on all your cars we've never seen. Thanks Jay for the close up tour of this impossibly rare unobtainable car, to see and hear it drive!

As a ten year old (I’m now 40) my dad took me to a model shop and I saw this and immediately wanted it over all of the countless others… it is still my favourite car! ❤ Thanks Jay for giving us a drive out 🎉
When I was about 13 I started buying a weekly car magazine. One of the first had an article about the Bugatti T57 SC Atlantic. The featured car was the one registered in Englandc as EXK6, now owned by Ralf Loren. It was a blue colour then. I was struck by its sheer elegance, and it has been on my fantasy car-collection list ever since.
Where's the missing one? I could use 100 mil right about now

Interesting note - the 4 chrome buttons on the bonnet/hood aren't decorations. They protect the paint when the bonnet/hood is open. They keep the two panels from rubbing on each other. I thought that was cool when I first realized that. 😎

I think the activated directional is to alert the camera car where Jay is turning. He mentioned it once after viewers mentioned the stuck blinker on a previous review.

Peugeot invented the twin-cam engine (winning the 1913 Indy 500 with it). Bob Burman bought one of the cars and when he couldn't get a replacement engine from Peugeot he got Harry Miller and Fred Offenhauser to build one for him. They learnt valuable info from that engine and were then able to redesign, refine and improve the layout over the years. BTW love all of the classics you have and thanks for sharing them and their history with us

@@Baard2000 Yes, in that L76 engine. The article by Peter Brock gives great detail about the innovations in that engine and car created by 'The Charlatans'. I did put a link up but seems to have gone. Search for Peter Brock The French rebels that revolutionized the racing world
Indeed, Peugeot had it first, their engine being designed by a Swiss engineer called Ernest Henry.

Yes, I didn't realise how good the paint is untill I noticed Jay's fingerprints on the spare cover as he replaced it.
Ralph Lauren's Type 57 was exhibited several years ago at the Cleveland Museum of Art, along with gorgeous Art Deco jewelry and furniture made by other members of the Bugatti family.
Bugatti Type 57, the peak of automotive legend without a doubt. I cannnot wait for that episode !
Jay mentioned Harry Miller and the dual overhead cam design. As Jay says later in the video, all the good ideas for early auto engineering originated in France. In fact Miller got the idea for his dual overhead cam design from the 1913 Peugeot Type L3 Coupe de l’Auto Voiturette Racing car. Miller’s designs ended up as basis for the Offenhauser and Meyer Drake Indy engines.

9:25 "the headlight is yellow because they did that in Paris..." No, not really a Parisian fad: those headlights are yellow because it was mandatory everywhere in France between 1936 and 1993. The rule was based on a 1933 study by the French Science Academy concluding that yellow light was less blinding and more efficient in foggy conditions (think of the British orange fog lights). The recommendation became law in 1936 with the added incentive it would help instantly identify French cars at night as opposed to foreign vehicles and specifically German ones in those times of heightened political tensions between both countries.
This information is totally correct, as opposed to most of the rubbish posts on here............

So many lovely things about this magnificent creation. One of the top things for me? The sound of the gear drive for the cams along with the supercharger.. Music of the highest order.
Mr. Leno's video here reminds me of Alain de Cadenet (RIP) and his Victory by Design series, when he was showing the cockpit, the starting procedure and such. The absolute appreciation all the way around for automobilia is inspiring.
That reminds me: It's about time for Donald from Adain museum to bring a Lancia or something old and Italian or French by Jay's shop.

I had a white Bugatti hot wheels when I was really little, 3 or 4, and it was the very first car I could identify and name at a glance. even at that age I could tell it was something special.
I see subtle things in the '63 to '67 Corvette from it. The split window vanished after '63 but the vestigial spine was there for the entire generation, and the slight cut into the roof for the doors as well.

Had a chance to visit his garage some years ago. It was a Monday. This car was not in its normal corner spot...looked like it had been driven recently. Looked inside and saw a ball cap and what i seem to remember as a Pringles can sitting on the seat. That's what i love...nearly priceless...but he's not afraid to drive them.

Oh, and in becoming an old dude myself (I'm only 68) I appreciate your shining example of courage under actual fire and your toughness of getting right up after being clothslined on your Indian. Helps me know I can still ride my KTM 790 Adventure like the wind etc.
Type 57SC in the Atlantic body style is my favorite car of all time :) Mad respect that you drive this, I only saw one once in a museum. To see (and hear) this in traffic would blow my mind.

WRONG!!! WRONG!!! Bugatti has NEVER been French;
First of all Ettore Bugatti was Italian, he was already building cars in Milan, (he presented one at the world fair) then he moved out to Molsheim GERMANY because a) family of his Italian wife had land in there and b) he couldn't pay the salaries that Alfa Romeo was paying in Milan. After the word war II. Molsheim bacame part of France also the French government nationalized all the companies so the French literally took away the company from Ettore he got so (understandibly) mad that he had a stroke that eventually took his life away. And "Jean" Bugatti.. son of Ettore is not Jean his name was Gianoberto Bugatti, Italian name, Ettore would die again if he knew his beloved car company is now known as French.
Jay, it's a stunning car. Thanks for sharing. One point about the car you may not be aware of, or you simply misspoke, the finish on the valve pans is not "Engine Turned". The process used is something called "Hand Scraping" . Typically seen on the ways of mills, and lathes. It's not only beautiful, but functional for getting the metal perfectly flat, and also giving it just enough texture to hold a film of oil. It takes a real master to do that type of work. As an old Machinist turned engineer, these kinds of things are what make me go "WOW!" Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

I'm going to get absolutely destroyed for this take, but I like the Duesenberg's more. Really neat car, but kinda looks like a greyhounds head, lol. Too bulbous in the backend. In my humble opinion, there's so many classier cars more deserving of "most beautiful." All subjective, though. I'm just some guy.
I recall seeing this Type 57 parked with one or two other Bugatti's when I had the pleasure touring Jay's garage, but to see it on the road brings it to another level. An incredible moving piece of art. Thanks Jay for this informative video!
For sure it is one of the most beautifull vehicles in the world - in one league with the Jaguar E Type, the Volvo P1800, the Citroën DS, the Mercedes 300 SL and so on.

I think it's fair to say that Ettore Bugatti may have inspired Miller, and Miller himself was inspired by the 1912 Peugeot GP engine.

Dear Jay, Electron is a mix between Aluminium and Magnesium; Volkswagen did millions of engine blocks from this material (aircooled Boxer).

Most beautiful? Well, I suppose beauty is with the apiarist ( in the eye of the bee holder) but this wannabe apiarist says the Type 55 is far prettier. Looks a lot less like a redback spider or other big-abdomened arachnid, and goes like a cut snake - for its time and era.
This one time, at band camp, a Type 55 owner drove his car interstate to a significant classic car rally and blew up the roots supercharger on the way. We stayed up all freakin' night rebuilding the supercharger (because we're talented plebs who want the damned thing to work, and the owner is rich as stink but didn't get that way by paying talented and devoted artisans by the hour) and our rich guy drove it in the rally the next day.
Opinion vs fact, or something. Like Boyle's law universally describing the relationship between a gas like nitrogen and the temperature at which it sits within a tyre being identical to other gases.
After spotting it in the background of so many videos, I'm glad Jay finally decided to show us this beauty in detail. It may not be an original Atlantic, but that sure doesn't make it any less beautiful. Thank you Jay, keep them coming!

there are many makes in the 30s that are beautiful cars. i have a picture on my wall of a Buick of that time period whose beauty equates to my mind a Bently. the Cord, the Auburn, Deusenburg. Mercedes, and more.

I too have been waiting a long time to see this car. My Uncle in South Africa had three Bugattis a Type 59, 51 and 37. He died a long time ago and the cars have been dispersed but to see one running so well was a real treat.

Bad Chad is banging one out a look alike for Jolene. He is working of pictures and doing it all by eye and taking his time doing so. It's quite interesting to follow his build as he is continuously refining the shape and creating something that looks a lot like the original, but given the method for designing it I wouldn't call it a real replica. Still there's so much work in shaping all those panels it takes a very special mind and an impressive set of skills to do it.
Time after time I'm amazed at his skills when he free hand complexly shaped body panels and it ends up fitting together. He makes something very complex look way to simple.
Note that I'm not on board with all his decisions when it comes to design, but I can't argue with his skills, and the results are way better put together than I would have imagined.
This was the film that got me interested in vintage bugatti s . Simon Kidston looking around Europe for his fathers 57c . 18:50 when I was 17 ( 2002 ) I begged my dad to give me a loan to buy a 1961 galaxy and when I got it I remember my mom and some friends saying i shouldn’t drive it so much because it only had 49k miles and I should keep it low and I said what’s the point of owning a car to just look at it and tell people people I have it? Screw that I want to drive it every day and I did in the summer.
