Apart from Connie (and I think also Leanne is brilliantly underrated), Simona is among the best one's up there. Shocking to see the feedback she is given over her accent. THE REAL MARIA VON TRAPP WAS AUSTRIAN FOR GOD'S SAKE!!! Her accent is probably closer to the real thing than any of the other's to begin with! Really, brutally unfair. Every word she says is crystal clear and no one struggles to understand what she is saying, and deciding that one particular accent should be superior over any other is making that industry narrow minded and frankly disgusting.
Hate to break it to you, but her accent IS the problem. Using the excuse that Maria was Austrian doesn't work - every production I've ever seen has only used British accents or similar. Plus Maria in the show is the same nationality as the Captain, the kids, etc. It would sound very out of place if she had a different accent to everyone else. And she's not one of the best either, she wouldn't have got through if it wasn't made for TV. They need a controversial contestant to add drama, THAT is why she got through.
@@FandubWorld you are absolutely allowed to disagree to my comment, but saying “hate to break it to you” as if your opinion is facts? By saying every production you’ve seen has only used British accents again proves what I said. There is an Anglo-superiority in the MT industry. Who’s to say she can’t have an Austrian accent? Just because every production prior hasn’t had it doesn’t make it a problem. As someone who works in Musical Theatre in New York, I can tell you that the industry (both theatre and film) is shifting. They are more accepting when it comes to accents like hers. It’s actually wanted! The same way the movie industry is shifting from using Tom Cruise in a fake German accent (ref. Valkyrie) to actually using German actors speaking German and the English have to read subtitles. The acting students for Musical Theatre today are told to embrace their accent. Because the notion that English is always better is starting to shift. But you are fully allowed to disagree, ofc. But this is what I experience first hand! 😊 oh on that same note: “In The Heights and West Side Story” is coming out soon. Strong accents in both movies. Spielberg refuses to make a whitewashed American version. So yeah!
@@FandubWorld I so agree with you, and the production of the Sound of Music that we all know and love so well, the movie version, was crammed from wall to wall with British and/or British American accents which to me happened because the movie was made for British/American audiences. You have made some valid points and I support you.
@@dianeshepherdlyricsoprano1394 Thank you! I'm honestly used to hearing British accents every time I watch this show, whether it be amateur or professional. The movie had American actors playing the kids, but they were all coached on perfecting their accents to sound appropriate for the location.
Haven't watched this since I was nine years old back in 2006. Looking back, can see how Connie was streets ahead of the other girls in terms of acting, story-telling and vocals (as a complete package) this first week. No contest. (Simona was my favourite back in the day. They'd never get away with giving her such a hard time for her accent now, just as they wouldn't get away with the incredibly uncomfortable sexualisation of poor Siobhan... These comments do impact the voting public, as well.)
I was 14/15 when this came out and it's funny how times have changed! I didn't think much of the comments to Simona and the sexualisation to Siobhan then. But now, dear me, absolutely awful! Glad we've moved forward! I hope Simona has found success elsewhere, she is so talented. The Sound of Music is set in Austria so I don't understand why her accent was such an issue! Poor girl! Also, I read on Connie's Wikipedia that she lost her voice?
Lenora Rose yeah she had to retire from singing for awhile because of tears in her vocal chords, i think she’s been training since surgery! but yeah I also wondered why simonas accent was such a big deal
I'm going to be honest and say that if this wasn't going to be a TV show, Simona would have stood no chance of getting through. This reminds me of The X Factor (a show I stopped watching years ago), they need a controversial contestant or two to create storylines where it's not needed. Think about it - would you honestly pick someone who has a very thick accent (there's no way she would have learned to control her accent in just a few weeks, the actual show was only about a month after the winner was chosen, it takes YEARS to learn/perfect an accent) over someone fluent in English? Encouraging her to do a show like Evita makes more sense - that show is entirely sung and the accent is less noticable. In The Sound Of Music, there's a large amount of spoken dialogue and obviously people would notice the accent. Yes Aoife is Irish and has an Irish accent, but she can also do an English one. They only picked her to create a storyline, with her accent constantly being brought up. In my opinion, Leanne shouldn't have got through either. She clearly looks younger than the rest of them, why didn't they keep her around to play Liesl? That would have made more sense? I know the age range is pretty close, with them all in their early to mid 20s, but they look older. Siobhan's only two years older than her, but she looks very mature for her age.
@@FandubWorld I agree. Showbiz doesn't have the same industrial relations laws as an office job. She would have been cut in the first call of auditions. Perhaps Leanne's dancing isn't great (Leisl has to be a great dancer) or they had a Leisl cast already or she doesn't look like the other kids. I thin they ept her there to play the "cure girl" role. Because I mean she could have been made to look older in some of the episodes but costuming seemed to be making her look younger. No party dresses and dewey eyed make up.
Man, seeing Simona so obviously hurt is horrible. She puts her heart and soul into her performances, she'd spoken previously about how her nationality always held her back from breaking through in England, and all they can hark on about is her accent. Actresses learn accents, right? If she has the talent, she can learn in time.
Yeah but they won't have time for the show. In the rehearsals you learn the songs, choreography and blocking of lines. There is no time for training. Her best bet would be to go away for a year and get some training. Otherwise she'll be confined to niche roles. But it's weird they got her to sing the same song as the other girl, so there was a direct comparison
She wouldn't have learned the accent in time. The show itself was less than a month after the winner was crowned. It takes YEARS to pick up an accent. Coming from someone whose uncle has lived in Canada since the 1970s and even then it took years for the accent to rub off on him.
I'm disgusted with how the show treated Emilie. I found an article that interviewed her and the show completely faked that letter and twisted her actual reasons for leaving (feeling out of her depth, being asked to sing with a damaged throat, and realizing that as much as she loved the experience she wanted to sing opera not musical theater). I'm glad Andrew at least defended her a little saying mentioning the potential damage to her voice as an opera singer.
I wouldnt believe that article either, she kept making up excuses in the show & was extremely rude in the first stages of the Maria school when Webbers chosen girls came back. Her attitude just wasn't humble enough to be a musical singer in any case.
I remember watching Connie as Maria onstage in 2007 and being blown away by how well she captured the part!! Nice to see her journey from here, imo she was a total standout from the beginning
She never wrote that letter, the producers interviewed her and took the bits and made it into a letter. 🥺 She left because she didn’t want to damage her voice.
Simona's voice is like a warm hug, I love it so much. The accent is a little tricky. Takes a lot of work to get to the preferred pronunciation, and time is money, especially in theatre.
I'm a little affronted at the way they treated Emily's departure, it seemed like nothing but pure bitchiness. I don't think anyone watching the show could have claimed to truly know why Emily decided to leave. These kinds of TV shows can be edited extensively to sway one's perspective, I imagine they were trying to make her seem a lot worse than she actually was. I hope this didn't cause her too much damage and she went on to become successful.
I'm so glad that Andrew defended her a bit saying that she is young and that she has a point as an opera singer that she could have hurt her voice on this show. I'm guessing that was the real reason she left and they show twisted it. She also just seemed very awkward socially and this kind of show can put a lot of necessary pressures on someone like that who just wants to work and not have to play to a camera.
So frustrating they harped on her accent rather than focusing on her talent. The Sound of Music Is in Austria. Most people from that region don't necessarily have an accent that is linked to the UK either so it's really irrelevant when most of your other choices have non Austrian/Hungarian/German accents as well.
