My main commuter car is already a 2017 Ford Focus SE. The reason I watched many of your videos was to educate myself on the most common problems so I could much more easily troubleshoot any given problem that comes along with Ford cars resulting in me being able to get the problem fixed correctly so I can know what type of money goes into these cars (besides your normal fluid changes, tire rotation, and inspection of the function of certain parts at Certian intervals).
@bryanx590 I already like where your suggestion about buying a Honda or Toyota is headed as far as these cars being very well built. However, When it comes to long-term reliability half of the battle does indeed consist of how well-built the manufacturer builds their cars, the other half of the battle is you the owner keeping up on ALL of these maintenance intervals. So, while it is a good idea to get a reliable car brand like Honda or Toyota, that alone does not necessarily mean that if you buy something like a Ford you are going to be out of luck because you can always INCREASE reliability by regular maintenance. So, the bottom line is, no matter how your car was built, no matter who built your car, and no matter what reputation the car brand has, if you the owner fails to keep up with regular maintenance ANYTHING other than actually doing your regular maintenance will NOT save you, therefore the ONLY WAY to truly have a reliable car is to actually do the necessary repairs and keeping up with your regular maintenance.
Good stuff! I remember my Dad cussing those things up when he was alive and a Ford tech...basically hard to get to a lot of components, then the transmission issues. But, this video has gave me more confidence in picking one up at some point. Maybe I can get one on the cheap needing a clutch? New daily driver for me...21' Raptor.
Thanks man! That’s what I do. I buy them dirt cheap when they need a clutch. People always say “transmission slipping”. All it needs is a $400 clutch. Buy them for 3K put $400 and half a Saturday into it and boom I got a $6000 car.
My wife had a 2012 ford fiesta that had issues with its transmission. It was the first car they bought, got it their freshman year of college in 2020. They put less than 10k miles on it. It went off to three different mechanics and none of them could fix it. They sold it for $900 at 91k miles. It was a shame too, they really liked it. We both drive buicks now. We're still in school. I have a 2000 LeSabre and they have a 97 Park Avenue Ultra. It uses premium so its probably half the fuel economy of their fiesta.
Everything you said is true, ive had 2.2010 Se,and a 2014 ST.Gave my grandson the 2010 ,at 101k.Hes still driving it.The ST was great,as it has the 6spd manual. Traded it on my current 2020 Fusion.
My wife had a 2013 focus. The transmission from day 1 had trouble shifting into gears below 30 mph. We took it to 3 different dealerships while under warranty. One said it was normal for it to do that. The other 2 did software updates on the transmission. Ford then sent us a letter admitting there is a problem with the clutch. They extended the warranty to 100,000 miles if I remember correctly. The problem is when you take it to Ford, they give you the runaround. They don’t want to replace the clutch if the car still runs with the faulty one. Lots of people have sued Ford over this. Some have gotten a lemon law settlement for what the car is worth at the time it finally goes to court which is minimal. And that amount is applied to the purchase of another Ford vehicle. We ended up trading the 2013 focus for a 2017 escape. Now we are learning of fatal flaws with it. Again, Ford is not going to recall the escape with the ecoboost engine that leaks antifreeze into the engine block. I enjoy your videos, but I will never buy another Ford again. Been burned by these bastards too many times.
Awesome video! I worked at a ford dealer from 2012-2018 and replaced many of these clutches. I had them down to 3-4 hours including programming and test drive. These cars are bullet proof. I own one now but went with the 5 speed manual. I also owned a 2003 and 2007 focus zx3’s. I find 2.0 and manual transmission in the 07 is very close to the 2012 I have now. Almost feels the exact same transmission. Cheap cars to maintain and great on fuel.
It is actually a dual clutch, which is effectively two manual transmissions together. He keeps talking about the clutch, it has two of them. And they're both junk. Ford cannot fix them.
I like the Focus, always have. My granddaughter has one now. But it is too small for me. My daily driver is a 2019 Ford F150 XLT Supercrew. And my son drive an 2019 Alunniduty.
Daily driver is a 2003 Explorer XLT 4.0 V6 with a timing replacement (as preventative maintenance!) with 300,000 miles. I like a real gas pedal and real knobs on the dash. Parts readily available. Also have a 2019 F-250 (gas) to pull my 10,000 lb. boat to the coast.
we have a 12' with manual trans, its pretty bulletproof as all the painters use it and beat on it pretty regularly. the 2.0L DI motor is a miser on gas too..
I have a 16 titanium love the car has 44k on it I've done the trans once so far but have the extended coverage for next time I get almost 40 mpg in it 💪🚗🔧🇺🇲💯
daily is 2018 Explorer with 2.3 , daughter had a 2012 Focus. had some of issues you described. Got to around 60k and it broke down. Dealer said needed engine. Got 1500 off my Explorer for it. She bought a Camry.
Which year focus did the 2.0 duratec not have vvt and not the transmission you mentioned . Is the manual transmission in these cars good as my wife likes to drive a manual better anyway. You have a great channel and I'm impressed with your knowledge.
Sorry for so many posts. I'm having a transmission problem. It did shutter b4 the rear end wreck. When I picked the car up from the body shop the battery was dead and I have no reverse and won't stay in forward gears. The code was p2837. Relearn didn't work also the body shop owner. Took it to a guy that works with car computers. The only tcm available is the dorman. The car only has 38 k on it. Lots of videos that I've seen with cars that have the p2837 code have a internal broken case. Really worried drove ok b4 I took it to the body shop. Caused more problems than what they fixed. The tcm on this car is not on the warranty. Can you give me any insite into how I might fix this problem
Well I guess I will have to b happy with a Transit Connect. It has that lovely engine I believe and a very nice little “real automatic” transmission. But do not loosen the front crankshaft bolt, or u will b in big trouble. U can fix most everything in that transmission with it still in the chassis. It all comes out the side. And as for the twin stick, or what ever u want to call it, u can keep it. Great video though. The trans ruins any appeal for the car. You’re a Ford tech and u could replace it once a month and u would still have time to spare. But us poor slobs don’t have that luxury
@@FlyingWrenches13 Four Escorts and 5 Focus' and a 2004 3 valve F150. All manual transmissions. No issues. Maintenence is the key. Motorcraft oil and filters. Most are still running. We have 8 children + lots of grands and greats who are driving the early cars. Accidents are thinning the fleet.
Hey Mason, awesome job with your videos. I'm in the Southern California area and I keep seeing TCM failures after the have been replaced. Usually they are covered by emissions warranty but a few have been CP. So your not seeing that in your area?
I have owned may manual shift vehicles and a clutch is something that I never expect as needing service. That replacement at 60-80 thousand miles is bullshit.

2016 Ford Focus Titanium.....190,000 miles....still shifting well on original clutch and no issue with the control module.

Great educational Video, i did not know that the transmission is actually a Manual, and the 10y 150 000 mile warranty on the ecu is great news!

Alumniduty haha yeah I always feel weird driving a car. Luckily I’m only 5’11” so I can fit comfortably in most cars.
I have a 2016 Focus RS for my daily driver. I love it. 6 speed and of course just one clutch 😉

Just get a focus with a standard. Problem solved.
I'm looking at buying a 2017 Ford.Focus with thirty thousand miles is that a good deal
I had a 2012 with the DCT, I thought it drove wonderfully. You just can't slip the clutch 24/7.
Exactlyyyyy
@@FlyingWrenches13 just bought a 21' Ranger. When you gonna roast it?
Haha, they actually aren’t that bad. I haven’t had to work on to many of them.
Do they have a real auto trans for these cars?
They don’t.
Is the 2.0 an ecoboost?
There is a 2.0 EcoBoost, but the one I’m talking about in this video is a naturally aspirated engine.
@@FlyingWrenches132.0 ecoboost in the ST is it just as good as the N/A 2.0l?

I agree witht the 2.0 engine being a gem...but the auto transmission is garbage...put in a manual transmission and its dam near perfect
