Put a little cup inside of Joe and then put the drink in so he’ll still get used and he’ll technically still be holding the drink but make sure the cup is secure and tight so the drink dosent fall out . LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
That still wouldn't work as she would need to put a mug that doesn't have the handle part. Upon putting it if she held the cup from the handle, it would be crooked and the drink would spill.
Wax will melt when in contact with warm or hot things like coffee. I would try something that is able to handle heat without melting. I would try dipping it in whatever you use to then cover the whole thing and internally creating a good barrier
A metal shaped like the inside of the cutie cup crochet with hard plastic outside the metal!!! I have a cup made of metal and plastic. And its my favourite. Its cheap but I've been using it for more than 7 years and its still in shape (except the spiderman print has now washed off of it)
What truly works, and theres an artist that does something similar, i forgot their name. But it works: glazing the cup with liquid ceramic clay, then firing it. When you fire it, the wool burns but the clay keeps the shape, making a mug that looks like its made of crochet
But then it defeats the point of the cup being made of yarn not from. I know who you are talking about though great idea but wouldn't meet the challenge goal
Try a ceramic cup that can withstand heat. Just send your measurements for the inside of it to a maker who can fire and make the cup if you can't do it yourself. The crotchet piece can be use like cover to keep it warm longer.
One idea, try soaking Joe in food safe resin and letting it set. He will be a usable drinking cup that can be used over and over! I'd be willing to bet that Peter Brown would try it for you.
im a crocheter or a person that crochets and I make functional crocheted coffee mugs and what u need to do I grab some glue liquid glue and every layer u make u need to glue it but like make the base and glue that then do like three more stick layers and let it dry before u repeat the process and u have a functional crochet coffee mug
Beeswax should work if it’s a solid enough coat with no holes. It’s used to coat the inside of drinking horns (made from actual animal horn) and with leather tankards (wood base and iron handle), but it would take way more than you used to make the crochet hold a liquid since the yarn absorbs liquid and there’s so many spaces between the strands. I think I would use a spoon to pour a little wax in working section by section, until the inside is fully coated. Then pour more wax in and rotate the cup around to get a solid layer. You’d have to build a full layer on the inside. The spoon and work in small sections first I think would reduce how much leaks through before cooling. You also probably could just dunk the whole piece in beeswax to absorb, remove, let set, then do another layer on the inside, but that would take more wax. Thing is you can’t put a hot drink into something lined with beeswax cause the wax will melt so you’d have to do an iced coffee.
Maybe an air dry version of glaze should be put on the inside (glaze is something normally used on ceramics and usually get cured by putting it in a kill, so an air dry version should not only be able to withstand the coffee heat, but also not burn up Joe
Use plaster on the inside and let it dry Use clay on the walls and bottom of the inside of the cup and let dry 3D print a insert for it Sew it tighter and try to use thicker wax
The warm coffee will melt the wax. The only thing I can think of is maybe coat the inside with like clay water and wait for it to solidify? Or put a small plastic cup inside the crocheted coffee cup, like Joe can be like a cute cover instead.
She can use a glass inside of it or a mug without a handle of a similar size . We use something like that it is a cover for our mug so it is easier to hold and cuter lol. It looks like i am drinking from a crochet mug . Cute and functional 😊
What I've seen to achieve the hard but yet still has the yarn pattern is fully covering the piece in glaze the firing it. The yarn will burn on the inside only leaving your piece perfectly how it was but now hard and should be able to hold your coffee:) hope this helps
There is an artist that crochets her work, dips it into ceramic liquid, then fires it in a kiln. The kiln burns away the material, just leaving the hard ceramic behind. Its a really beautiful process. Maybe if you know anyone in the pottery industry you could try it out
Use resin. It will probably leak through the material but it will still be pretty and you can always pick out the small details. It will also stay and it will look cute
just put a plastic insert, the coffee will eventually get onto the crotchet so putting the crotchet in resin or some form of sustainable & safe material to keep the shedding from effecting the drink would be best
There is a type of 3d printing that uses liquid resin that cures under uv light. Paint the inside with the resin simaler to this video, possibly curing it ever so often so it doesn't just become a gooey mess. You can use a UV light, or letting it sit in sunlight is enough to cure it. However, I don't know if bare cured resin is food safe, so you may want to paint over the cured resin. Keep in mind, since this resin cures in UV light you need to make sure you do this in a room with no exterior windows as sunlight will hardened up the paintbrush and even the container holding the resin fairly quickly. I guarantee this would work if done correctly.
Try sewing in a waterproof fabric, make sure it will also not melt with hot coffee, the reason the wax probably didn't work is the heat from the coffee probably melted the thin layer of wax way too fast.
You gotta dunk the whole thing in wax, just dunk it in their, and probly do it for a couple layers, also hot coffee will probly melt tight through the wax so its probly best to use cold or room temp coffe
Coat insides by using atomiser. Or, alternatively, weave using hydrophobic crochet. Don't forget to give your crochet a hard skeleton, or it will bend and spil.
Do layers of wax also another thing you could do is hot glue if you just put hot glue on the bottom and then you slowly spiral your way up joe and if you do it correctly, it will create a cup inside of a cup and it will be fused to Joe
You could put beeswax paper inside two layers of crochet or you can make the inside with thinner yarn that is more closely stitched and the soak in in the wax or at the wax with a sponge
Brush on the wax inside and out, then reward the whole cup so that the beeswax soaks in and fills all the holes. Maybe an oven on the lowest temperature on some parchment paper. Kinda like how beeswax wrappers are made
The main issue here is the fact that it's a loose weave. No matter how you go about waterproofing the material, there will always be holes it can leak through. A very tightly woven material would have better luck. You might try waterproofing something like a silk or satin and then line the cup with it.
Add plastic cup that fits perfectly inside of it or a ceramic coating to the inside to make it functional mug don’t use wax or anything that has a melting point that is low like that use stuff that has a melting point of 258°F or higher
Put a little cup inside of Joe and then put the drink in so he’ll still get used and he’ll technically still be holding the drink but make sure the cup is secure and tight so the drink dosent fall out . LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
That'd make it a coozie, and not a cup though. Thus rendering it a fail for the thesis of crocheting a functional coffee cup.
That still wouldn't work as she would need to put a mug that doesn't have the handle part. Upon putting it if she held the cup from the handle, it would be crooked and the drink would spill.
Why would you want to put Joe inside a cup?wait who the hell is even Joe???
@DedektifPikachu you would be able to crotchet Joe around the cup probably

Well there are different types of wax so it might work if she used a high melt wax. She doesn't say what type of wax.
You should tried glue

Maybe cold coffee and more layers of wax? The hot coffee probably re-melted the wax!
Dude do you wanna drink wax?
💀💀💀
Bro they just said that they should use cold coffee so there ISN’T wax in the coffee 💀
@valentinehen I think what they're saying is when the wax is melted its easier for the coffee to get through the crochet.
i agree, i mean if the wax gets in the coffee, i dont think she would drink it, so theres really nothing to lose

Use iced coffee or a cold drink because if it is warm it will melt and fall through
I coated a drinking horn and you need to pour and turn the vessel it needs to be thick to work :) but it lasts a crazy long time after
You can sew a plastic bag on the inside and then Pour coffee inside
Wise words: "coffee coffee, dingle dingle". Just found my yearbook quote

You can use wax it and why the wax is still hot you can take a heavy doty plastic bag and put it in the plastic bag in the mug and cut the access off.

Lol
Find a pop bottle where the bottom can fit inside of Joe, the cut it to the right size, then glue it into joe. It should work. Good luck!
You should make a clear plastic mold or wax one to the shape of it so that it still looks like crotchet but holds coffee
You could try lining the inside with foil! (Maybe glue it down with something nontoxic)
Dip it in wax, then cold water over and over (like 8 times), like candle making
The hot coffee would just melt it
Crochet around a mug or make a sleeve 4 one
Use plaster on the inside and let it dry
Use clay on the walls and bottom of the inside of the cup and let dry
3D print a insert for it
Sew it tighter and try to use thicker wax
awww such a cute cup of Joe ☕️
Maybe 3d print a plastic mold or something like that or Use a silicone mold to keep the flexibility if you want that

You should use waterproof yarn, honestly I think this isn’t actually a bad idea.

Put resin on the inside of Joe let it sit, then put coffee in it (and yes, cover the entire inside with resin, including the bottom😂) ❤❤❤😊😊😊
Literally my first thought too!
Is resin food safe though?
@@piratepenquinn It probably depends on the type of resin, mostly not I think
