Well, that is mostly true. There's an old joke that goes something like this, "When I was a teenager I couldn't believe how stupid my mom was. Now that I'm an adult I am incredibly amazed how much smarter my mother got by the time I was 25". I admit I understood some things about my mother more after I moved out on my own. Now, I find myself sounding so much like my mother that I turn around thinking she's behind me. 😅😅

To all future parents: NEVER compare your kids. Especially with siblings. Doing this doesn’t encourage them, it only hinders their goals and breaks the relationship between both the parents and the person who you’re comparing them with. Doing this never makes your kid feel good enough, eventually it spirals them into depression.
My mom always told me to let her know if I think I was suffering depression. But it feels like My parents were the cause of my depression that they themselves are trying to cure from me.
Favoritism in families are the worst thing ever. It's like another form of abuse in it's own way. One child gets treated with love and makes their parents or parent proud while the other has to work harder and impress them just to get they're love. It doesn't matter how kids look or how they are as a person, they all deserve unconditional love from both parents or parent. I hope people could learn something from this. Like the best quote itself... "every child deserves a parent but not every parent deserves a child"

Like if one child does good in school the parent approves, but if the other doesn't do such a good job the parent tells them that they should do better or ask them why can't they be more like their sibling. Not to say that they need to be perfect or good at everything just saying that they shouldn't have to work hard just to make their parents proud
@Crumble well, if someone isn't there for you, I believe you should do what's best for you, whether that's cutting them out or ignoring it. Nomatter what type of relationship you have with them.
As an asian, I can totally relate! Our parents always want us to do well in the subjects they found most easiest. But you pick up strength along mistakes, thanks Dhar Mann, your videos are always so relatable and effective towards real life.
I am an Asian too and my family actually allows me to follow my dreams but they are a bit verbally abusive towards me and brother... So I suffer from depression and almost PTSD... I just feel bad about my self but I need to get used to it and get through all of this... So yeah... My life is more complicated and harsh than it was...

As a teen who does struggle with school, I do believe her mom has some points. Though it was not okay whatsoever to call her own daughter a "screw up" but taking away her phone and some things she does enjoy, is a very common consequence. I also believe it is correct, but parents also need to try to see the child's point of view. Some things to mother could have done, maybe getting her a tutor, helping her herself. As most parents do help their children with work and as they should. But if taking her phone every time she fails, and she continues to fail. The mother should be able to realize taking her phone is not the solution and she should resort to other consequences and solutions.
I'm dyslexic so, I kinda gotta pass on some things. But yeah, I still tried my best in school. I didn't pass every test but my dad knew I worked hard and I tried, so I didn't get punished too harshly

I like that she helped her mom even though her mom was really unkind to her. It shows what a good person she is. I also like how much her sister cares and that she doesn't have what I've taken to calling the "Golden Child Complex."
When I told my mom I reached 2k subscribers and my channel could be monetized, she was just excited and announced it to my dad. But not a single time have I felt their actual support towards my channel or even my future gaming career.
After watching this, I have to thank Dhar Mann for making me realise how lucky I am to have supportive parents, and well, good enough grades. I've been doing commissions for a few months now and I've helped my mother pay off her debts by using the commission money I've received from my art clients. My mom also doesn't have to worry about my grades because they're good enough for me to pass. I really feel bad for this girl but I'm glad it worked out in the end.

As an artist myself and an illustrator in training I would like to say that this video felt relatable, sure It didnt help me, but thats cause I dont need any emotional support. This is why school should be more interest based. More electives and freedom to choose, and you can learn a subject with things you are passionate about. For example, you can have a connect the dots assignment for the artists, or maybe for the readers you can do one where each correct answer gives you more of the story, like CommonLit, but more fun and atoned to your interests! :)

The point is some kids are prodigy and a genius at one subject like math, art, music or any other things. If you notice how your child has a really great gift that has been notice by lots of people even the experts like playing music or drawing, it's best to give them a direction, send them to a different school like art school where children and teens learn art who are prodigies.

Mom’s whole thing about “staying up late” is kinda sad because a lot of teens don’t consciously choose to stay up late. Our biology is different than an adult’s because of the hormones waging war with our bodies. Telling us to “go to bed earlier” doesn’t do anything-we just toss and turn until we naturally feel tired. Asking a teen to go to bed at 9 pm is the equivalent of asking an adult to go to bed at 6 pm, and asking a teen to wake up at 7 am is the equivalent of asking an adult to wake up at 4 am. Sure, teenagers do dumb things (because the last part of the brain to fully develop is the prefrontal cortex, which handles decision making) but that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve a little more respect and understanding. Every adult was a teenager once.

I really appreciate how they meant it's not bad to only have one good thing in yourself. I'm really bad at school (even though I try sooo hard) but I love to sing and I THINK others like it too. Get a proper job that can leave you financially stable then start turning hobbies into jobs. Unless you're already very popular and making bank, get good grades and get a good job before anything.

Dhar mann, this video makes me incredibly happy. My mother tells me the same thing, as in I am not going to make it as an artist. And even though the majority don’t make it, “nobody ever accomplished anything great by playing it safe.” So, thank you. This is the motivation I needed.

Though I didn’t like the mom just supported her when she made money and paid off her debts, what enraged me even more was that she kept the money for the phone and laptop.
This video speaks loud facts. My older sister graduated with a PHD, Masters, and a bachelors. Also studying in Korea and etc. She was very smart in school and gets 4.0 every semester. My parents are very proud of her accomplishments and treats her out to whatever she wants. Parents pays all her bills and tuition, shower her with gifts, a new car, and much more. She’s now working a minimum wage job and going out every weekend now she’s done with school. For me, I’m decent with school averaging a 3.8 gpa with two associates degree and a bachelors up coming. But it’s has almost took me 6 years to final to transfer to a UC. Regardless, if I bring home a test or academic achievement. It wouldn’t go noticed by my parents. I moved on to being a part time student and working part time where I am making twice as more than my sister. Started a business, TH-cam channel, and more. I told my parents about my accomplishments outside of my academic career, still no signals of my parents being proud or happy since I am not where my sister is at. At the end, I realized that I don’t need my parents approval or recognition of my success. I’ve worked hard to pay for my own tuition, bills, got my own job, started a business. I’m happy that my parents chose to focus and support my sister more than me because I realized how capable I am.

It is a trap we all fall as parents (or at least for most), especially in chinese families. I can relate to both sisters sides. One is pressured to keep getting good marks to honor parents. One gets pressured for why not getting good marks. And why not be like from the positive role model who gets good marks .?

That's so beautiful. As an artist myself, I'm honestly highly talented. But this video has taught me great that not everyone should be the same, but everyone has unique dreams to succeed. Sometimes, most parents would say, "Art isn't gonna make you live, and you might starve," which is really what parents say. We wish our parents would feel the same way. It also takes a big journey to success. Sucess requires patience. For example is when someone who enters the cave needs to keep exploring until you find the tressure. Just because someone doesn't get popular with their art means they give up. Everyone has dreams and they can suceed.
This is relatable with me.. When i was younger like 10-12 yrs old my mom always angry and unsupportive me like she always saying that art not bring anything in life but then i made really big suprise and make my mom regrets it that till im highschool 13 my grade improve cuz thx to my art and supportive teacher and dad.. Now my mom become supportive cuz im telling hwr what my teacher tell me that i have vision creative superpower means that my passion bout drawing that can help me improve my grades and release stressed and depressed.. The right to be thought of as adorable - (even if you have a face that only a mother could love). It’s sad most parents nowadays don’t hold themselves to these rules causing pain and suffering to children. And the mother in this video was seriously lacking point 2 towards her child.
I totally relate to this. Im an artist but im not that good in my school. I have a brother who has good grades but he doesn’t do art. I am very passionate about art because it makes me happy. My mom always compares me with my brother and always never supports me by my talents. She always complains on how im very stupid and how i should give up in my art so I can have good grades. And its still happening until now. Hopefully my mom understands how i feel about art.
Remember parents, you should never compare a child with another, all children are born with something special, and they can do whatever they put their mind to, if you want them to be successful you have to believe in them and never compare them to someone else, love your children the same and never choose a favorite.

As a kid that loves drawing I'm happy to have supportive parents, i may not be as smart as others I'm happy that my parents support me with the art i make. Being an artist I truly enjoyed this one and seeing how I wasn’t the child that was labeled a “Straight A Student”, I could also relate to how Kimmy felt for school wasn’t for me as well because I was passionate about other things which included art and music. I can sort of relate to this video. I have an A+ in art EVERY YEAR and I am so proud of it. My my average in my other classes are in 80s and 70s. My mom is proud of me for my art skills and always makes sure I do decent and pass in my other classes. I’m so appreciative with her and her encouragement

True story. I was the favorite daughter. My sister looked more like my fathers side of the family. Our mother didn't treat her the best. I used to cry thinking about it as a child. My sister was very, very smart. She eventually went to law school. Passed the bar the first time she took it. Was head of her class. I went to Respiratory school struggled to pass the exam. Was never much of a student. I'm very attractive. More creative and love to help and take care of people. We are very different but I always wanted to be close to my sister. It was never possible because of how she was treated. No matter what I do she doesn't like me. I will always love her but seems like she blames me for how she was treated. I'm not close to our mother. She still works hard to impress her, I could care less. Love your children the same it will affect them in the future.

Honestly all I saw from this one was the mom only being proud and approving of her daughter when she flashed money. The daughter went from failing to getting a C. The mom still wasn’t happy enough. She still compared her to the sister. Then she finds out the daughter has money and also paid off her debt, she suddenly loves her and approves of her daughter’s passion. Her sister was so amazing and supportive!
You guys will never understand. Immigrant parents just wants the best for their kids. They want to make sure that their kids will be set and successful and not have to struggle like they did. As hurtful and brutal this might sound but why do you fell the mother need to feel proud and appreciative of what the child should be doing when she is the only reason why the child is alive and has a safe and comfortable life and is not on the streets starving or being attacked by thugs. If she is always happy for her child then the child will have no means and motivation and purpose to improve. At the least this was not in the past where a parent can just sell their child or leave them to die in the forest if they wanted to. As long as the child is living under his or her parents roof they are their parents property and can be entitled to do what they wish.

Favoritism in families are the worst thing ever. It's like another form of abuse in it's own way. One child gets treated with love and makes their parents or parent proud while the other has to work harder and impress them just to get they're love. It doesn't matter how kids look or how they are as a person, they all deserve unconditional love from both parents or parent. I hope people could learn something from this. As a teen who does struggle with school, I do believe her mom has some points. Though it was not okay whatsoever to call her own daughter a "screw up" but taking away her phone and some things she does enjoy, is a very common consequence. I also believe it is correct, but parents also need to try to see the child's point of view. Some things to mother could have done, maybe getting her a tutor, helping her herself. As most parents do help their children with work and as they should. But if taking her phone every time she fails, and she continues to fail. The mother should be able to realize taking her phone is not the solution and she should resort to other consequences and solutions.
I'm dyslexic so, I kinda gotta pass on some things. But yeah, I still tried my best in school. I didn't pass every test but my dad knew I worked hard and I tried, so I didn't get punished too harshly

This is why school should be more interest based. More electives and freedom to choose, and you can learn a subject with things you are passionate about. For example, you can have a connect the dots assignment for the artists, or maybe for the readers you can do one where each correct answer gives you more of the story, like CommonLit, but more fun and atoned to your interests! :)

Mom’s whole thing about “staying up late” is kinda sad because a lot of teens don’t consciously choose to stay up late. Our biology is different than an adult’s because of the hormones waging war with our bodies. Telling us to “go to bed earlier” doesn’t do anything-we just toss and turn until we naturally feel tired. Asking a teen to go to bed at 9 pm is the equivalent of asking an adult to go to bed at 6 pm, and asking a teen to wake up at 7 am is the equivalent of asking an adult to wake up at 4 am.
Sure, teenagers do dumb things (because the last part of the brain to fully develop is the prefrontal cortex, which handles decision making) but that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve a little more respect and understanding. Every adult was a teenager once.

My older sister graduated with a PHD, Masters, and a bachelors. Also studying in Korea and etc. She was very smart in school and gets 4.0 every semester. My parents are very proud of her accomplishments and treats her out to whatever she wants. Parents pays all her bills and tuition, shower her with gifts, a new car, and much more. She’s now working a minimum wage job and going out every weekend now she’s done with school.
For me, I’m decent with school averaging a 3.8 gpa with two associates degree and a bachelors up coming. But it’s has almost took me 6 years to final to transfer to a UC. Regardless, if I bring home a test or academic achievement. It wouldn’t go noticed by my parents. I moved on to being a part time student and working part time where I am making twice as more than my sister. Started a business, TH-cam channel, and more. I told my parents about my accomplishments outside of my academic career, still no signals of my parents being proud or happy since I am not where my sister is at.
At the end, I realized that I don’t need my parents approval or recognition of my success. I’ve worked hard to pay for my own tuition, bills, got my own job, started a business. I’m happy that my parents chose to focus and support my sister more than me because I realized how capable I am.

Being an artist I truly enjoyed this one and seeing how I wasn’t the child that was labeled a “Straight A Student”, I could also relate to how Kimmy felt for school wasn’t for me as well because I was passionate about other things which included art and music. So this one really had me cheering for her….I was so happy that she gained confidence and contentment And success from her art despite how her mother was treating her. Every child deserves a good parent
I can sort of relate to this video. I have an A+ in art EVERY YEAR and I am so proud of it. My my average in my other classes are in 80s and 70s. My mom is proud of me for my art skills and always makes sure I do decent and pass in my other classes. I’m so appreciative with her and her encouragement

True story. I was the favorite daughter. My sister looked more like my fathers side of the family. Our mother didn't treat her the best. I used to cry thinking about it as a child. My sister was very, very smart. She eventually went to law school. Passed the bar the first time she took it. Was head of her class. I went to Respiratory school struggled to pass the exam. Was never much of a student. I'm very attractive. More creative and love to help and take care of people. We are very different but I always wanted to be close to my sister. It was never possible because of how she was treated. No matter what I do she doesn't like me. I will always love her but seems like she blames me for how she was treated. I'm not close to our mother. She still works hard to impress her, I could care less. Love your children the same it will affect them in the future.

Honestly all I saw from this one was the mom only being proud and approving of her daughter when she flashed money. The daughter went from failing to getting a C. The mom still wasn’t happy enough. She still compared her to the sister. Then she finds out the daughter has money and also paid off her debt, she suddenly loves her and approves of her daughter’s passion.

As hurtful and brutal this might sound but why do you fell the mother need to feel proud and appreciative of what the child should be doing when she is the only reason why the child is alive and has a safe and comfortable life and is not on the streets starving or being attacked by thugs. If she is always happy for her child then the child will have no means and motivation and purpose to improve. At the least this was not in the past where a parent can just sell their child or leave them to die in the forest if they wanted to. As long as the child is living under his or her parents roof they are their parents property and can be entitled to do what they wish.
