NightFlyyer's 9 R/C Helicopter Tips and Rules of Thumb.

  • I wrote these back in 1980, before there were Cheater radios with power steering electronics. There were no PCs, Iphones, gyros, and we only 5 channel 72 MHZ radios. There were no electrics and so we had to know how to run and keep nitro engines running too. These tips were published in the magazines, as back then heli flying was hard without gyros and I learned to hover inverted without one, but was taught by John Simone Jr, the National Helicopter champion, so that really helped. Due to the tremendous amount of requests for my 9 Helicopter Flying tips and rules of thumb, I decided to present them this way.
*1. Never EVER let your friends fly YOUR models! It is always better to GET AN INSTRUCTOR for those first flights! They can tell if problems are you or the heli! Beginners can't tell! This is your best chance to not damage your heli. Most hobby stores know of clubs, so dont be afraid to ask for help.
#2. NEVER ever watch the tail rotor! Only watch the nose.
#3. DO not attempt nose in yet, (no matter what your friends EGG you on to do) . And DON'T let people watch you when you're learning.
They cause more crashes, because they always "egg" you on and you feel pressured to fly for them.
You see 4 of the controls are BACKWARDS in nose in. It will come naturally later on, so don't worry about it now.
#4. Never fly AWAY until you can hover, cause you will never get it back without crashing.
Those First landings are always expensive if you're IMPATIENT and you decide to fly away anyway!
#5. Always practice hovering at eye level. Lower is more difficult in ground effect.
#6. Get used to Pinching the left and most important stick (3 controls) with index finger and thumb. To be good at 3d, you cant let that thumb escape for a second, as any pro will tell you. It will pay off later, especially if you fly with gloves on, like we do in the Midwest..
    37. Never CHOP the throttle stick off. It must go down GENTLY or the blades will hit the tail boom, when the skids slam down on the ground and the blades keep going down.
#8. Remember what your last move was when flying, so when you get lost, just keep going through the motions (pretending to see it, till you see it again)
#9. ONLY fly as far away as you can comfortably see your heli and no more.
Remember, "He who dares nothing, needs not expect anything".
So "If you continue to do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always gotten!"
Thanks for subscribing and watching. Most of this is simply logic and common sense.

Thanks Dave, I started watching your videos before I bought my coaxial heli 6 months ago. Whenever I get a little frustrated I watch some videos and get a bit educated and motivated to keep trying. I've since upgraded my coaxial with xtreme motors and extended shaft to fly outside. I'm looking forward to moving up to a fixed pitch soon, please keep the video coming, I think I'll need a whole lot of motivation to get there. THANK YOU so much for your time and effort, you are an inspiration!!!

Wow I remember watching this video almost 4 years now. Listen to this man I watched all his videos and he helped me out tremendously. I am now employed as a UAV saftey pilot and fly and build different types of aircraft. Thanks Dave I can't even imagine trying to learn without your guidance. In the end it all comes down to practice and research. Do your homework and never give up.

Thanks a lot Mr. Dave or as we say here in Venezuela, "MUCHAS GRACIAS" I just bought a walkera 5-4q3 airwolf for me and a e-sky co-comanche for my 12 y.o. son. We are newbies on this and we are watching your videos and reading this 9 tips trying to avoid as many crashes as we can. Today in the comanche first flight we broke two rotor blades against a wall, but, it came with replacement and tomorrow we'll try again. Thanks again for all your knowledge and sharing of wisdom with us the RC-DUMMIES!

For me as a newbie, learn how the helicopter works. The theory lessons are priceless considering time and energy for repair. The good news is once i learned how to work on my bird i think i grew another feather and flew a bit better. NF's videos are generous info and i thank you for taking time to share your knowledge.

I find what works for me is to always watch the part of the heli that is furthest from me whether it be the nose or the tail. That part will always go in the direction the stick is moved in. Forward and back control I find quite easy even when the heli is nose in.
I find your videos very inspiring!

he is 100% correct on using a simulator, a major gigantic huge money saver!
I learned on the original DOS based 'Dave Brown' RC sim... not pretty to look at and the physics weren't exactly very high resolution, but I crashed $20,000 worth of choppers learning on this simulator just getting used to the control reversal of nose-in flight. Without sims, I doubt many could learn and become proficient without already being a millionaire or having rich and very generous parents.

You are doing some great stuff here and I want to thank you! It is all very informative and educational. I own a Nexus 30, stop flying it about 8-10 years ago (not exactly sure). I had some major family issues come up and I had to put it aside. Now it's an antique to me, never to be flown again. Too bad, I really liked that heli. I am now looking to get into RC Heli again and these electrics are impressive. You channel has help get me re-educated and I hope to be doing hover practicing soon.

Dave, if you didn't know, the new Phoenix RC 2.5 Simulator is very good. I think it is more focused on helis more than planes and it also has many Horizon Hobby products. For example, it has the Blade 400, Parkzone Corsair, MSR, 4-Site, MCX, CX2 and tons more. You should try it. I love mine and looks and feels very realistic. It also costs much less than Realflight. I've went from getting it on Christmas and now I can hover and fly helis in forward flight with proper turning. I can prop-hang too

Even after the guy at the LHS begged....and I mean literally begged me not to purchase the Blade SR as my first heli, I did it anyway! You name it, I've mangled it....BIG TIME! Anywho, going back tomorrow for more parts and to get the smaller SMR or whatever the little Blade version is. Gonna fix my SR up and park it. Starting where I should've started at in the beginning. I know it is an old video, I hope you are all caught up on your messages :o) I learned and still fly on a Nexus 30 back in the early 90s. The only club in the area at the time (Bay City RC club) was a bunch or retirees and they hated helicopters, they called it an egg beater, it was all in good fun. I had to teach myself how to fly, I did it with a book, I wish I could remember the title/author, but I just took it slow and practiced and practiced and practiced hovering until I could do it in my sleep from every angle and I only had one boom strike. Great advice and thanks for sharing.

You are an "original" heli flyer. Zero gyro, custom parts,...etc. You stuck with it. I'm curious what you think of the "latest greatest" with the industry forcing newbies to start with DFC and FBL systems? I still fly with FLYBAR and I don't see any "next level" improvement or "locked-in feeling" potential in everything I've read and heard from my heli-buddies at the field. Just see a lot of money wasted(everyone keeps revolving 3G > BeastX...etc. I feel sorry for the beginners who "don't read the manual or internet research" which is about 90% of them. Result. Crash. Also, feel sorry for the experience pilots on the field losing "fun/flying" time doing set up for weeks. However, I "do appreciate" all my FBL buddies giving me their old rotor head flybars parts!!!

Thanks for the tips Dave, I've been flying coaxel's for about 3 weeks and just purchased a Blade 120SR. Got it trimmed finally and flew out the whole battery charge, mostly in hover. Kinda feels like I took my first step in single blade fixed pitch. (solo). My dream is to advance to collective pitch.. I am 61 years old and hope I have the reflexes to do so. .

I spent ages trying to pinch as I took your experience and words for Gold.
Then I found SmaktalkRC, Bert and Tariq and went back to thumbs. Pinching was really holding me back. Feels so much more natural but you got me on the gloves. I had to cut holes in my thumbs :)
Otherwise, I dig your vids, loads of inspiration, cheers
I think you should link some Hard 3D with thumbs just in case your avid noobs are killing themselves and their fun by sticking with the pinch of doom.

Some simulators so not simulate the real thing. Aerofly RC 8 does, meaning it puts drag on the landing skids, like real flying. Helis like to slide and if you do not immediately compensate, it can tip. If I am in tall grass, I punch it up pretty quick and that is what you may need to do. Get it up and right out of ground effect. If it is not that, I suspect a faulty gyro or improper setup. Check your cyclic and make sure they are moving. Always allow the gyro to set for 10 seconds after setting it down. Flybarless helis need time to align. Have you seen this? It may interest you. Thanks. th-cam.com/video/fu-v27iTygg/w-d-xo.html

Do you have to be able to hover side in before you can fly around? Or is it ok if you fly around if you can do tail in hover?

One of these tips is questionable, at best... another has been affected by time.
    1. To suggest pinching the left stick while thumbing the right seems like bad advice to me. The pilot is generally going to favor one method over the other, but will typically stay symmetrical with respect to the left and right sticks.
    2. Hands-down, Phoenix has taken over as THE heli simulator. End of story.

Dave is that free FMS RC simulator safe to use, it has the name FMS2LPHA85.EXE, remember your warning video you made on the FMS virus, it had the same name. Only this file I downloaded straight from the FMS site not Aerofly.. please give me a reply..
