@MrSteeleFPV, at 5:07 with your "pinky hold" you changed my FPV world! As a thumbs guy I tried many to shift to pinching, failing miserably. The second I sustained my radio with the pinkies as you show here, suddenly everything fell into place and my control over the sticks improved dramatically. Thanks man.

Thumb flying generally comes from a background in flying planes and pinching a background in flying helis. quads are new! gaming doesnt have much to do with it. Mode 1 flyers tend to use thumbs and mode 2 pinches because flying mode two is similar to holding a joystick where as mode one is detached from that.

Yeah, I haven't played much games before and I mostly used thumbs when I flew planes. I switched to the hybrid pinch/thumbs when I started flying fpv quads and its so much better.

+AndyRC I really disagree that gaming has nothing to do with it. There are a lot of people in this hobby in their 20s and older who grew up gaming. I don't think it's fair to say it has no effect on how people might hold a controller.

Love the episode! I'm a Preacher For The Pinch too. Came from a modest 3D fixed-wing background; like Steele says, your altitude control improves SOOO much when you go The Pinch. For anyone making the transition, I started off "guarding" the stick with the forefinger and gradually bringing it in to the control motion. Sim time helps.

I have heard Mr Steele mention the hybrid pinch. As a beginner, I am concerned about learning bad habits, so still struggling with both pinch and thumb only. Thumb only is really hard to be consistent with yaw and throttle. Pinching only my hands get cramp. Then I bit the bullet, and forced myself to use the hybrid pinch for a few hours in Velocidrone, and amazingly my hands remained relaxed with no fatigue, and fingers don't feel cramped up as they did when pinching or thumbing only. Thank you guys. So close to giving up fpv as a beginner.

Long time ago I read an article in the Model Airplanes Magazine about this and pretty much the consensus in order to get more precision was pinching, again, as you said, there is nothing wrong using just the only thumbs but definitely adding the index finger to the stick controls gives more feedback about the movements. Excellent info guys, keep going!

  • @xoticaddiction

I've been flying for a while now and started off as a total thumb flyer but as I developed a passion for 3D planes and my skills increased I found myself naturally moving to a pinch technique, it wasn't forced either I'd be flying and would just notice myself switching to get finer more precise movements. With my slower quads I still tend to thumb fly but fpv I can't fly thumb mentally I immediate move to pinch. Great video on an age old topic for flyers keep it up guys

Yes, I have a DX9 and the ergonomics and gimbals all feel very good, but what receiver do you use to get range when flying FPV? I find that if the receiver is small enough to fit in the quad, it doesn't have the range.

    • @circularly
      @circularly 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Agreed. I have fairly large hands and I still feel like the radios are way too big and it's hard to control the sticks I think it's especially bad for people with smaller hands (also makes the hobby less accessible to women, I think). Hopefully there will be more varied designs like the Turnigy Evolution.

THIS. On the long sticks of most radios, pinching is more comfortable and presice. If the sticks were shorter, thumbing would be the way.

so I started flying cheap planes and quickly found a love I had not known. I progressed to my first builds (f550 and a qav250 ) the fell in love with long range fpv..... along comes Chris Klick and Ritewing, after meeting him and talking in depth and finally building a Zephyr of my own, he helped me to understand the gain in accuracy you get from a more pinched type of control. Great video and good topic. Just a shout to Ritewing and the first ever flying Kilngon Bird of Prey.....Long live the Riot.

I too started with helis and transitioned from thumbs to pinch then to a hybrid. The weird thing is that when I fly fixed wing or planes I tend to use thumbs only but quads I use hybrid pinch. It took me a while to get comfortable with my radio as I changed from Heli to planes then to quads I could not use one method for all. I have to try the "close your eyes my son and feel the radio from within" method and might throw in a hummmm.

thank you for the advice! I just recently started flying in Sims using thumbs, and was punching the throttle to much or over correcting. so I woke up early before work tonight, and remember reading about pinch or thumbs(first day with s im tried pinch didn't feel natural). so i googled it to find out the benifits and if I should learn pinch of not. the hybrid way you explained In this video feels way more natural! another thing I noticed is flying in better control, so I spent 10 min freeflying to get use to it. went into a race course, and made it through with out crashing, but also cut about 45 seconds of my times from before! what a difference using the hybrid way!

Well I been practicing using the pinch method on the sim every time I practiced. I finally got out to fly and used it the entire time I was out in the real world. It became really natural feeling once I got over the nervousness of a major change of habit. The hardest part was getting used to holding the radio itself. At first it felt like I would drop it but it became a normal feel after only a few minutes. Thanks for bringing this up and talking about the hows and whys

I started thumbs but they would go numb from the adrenaline. Then they'd hurt from pressing even harder to try to feel them. So, I decided (in my head first) to go hybrid to offset that. Also because logically it seemed I'd have to have better dexterity involving my index finger. It took a few batteries to adjust but for me it was the definitely the right choice. Interesting to hear both of your reasoning and preferences.

  • @castin5244

I pinch the throttle/yaw stick and thumb on the pitch/roll stick. The reason is because I find it easier to separate vertical and horizontal stick movement with pinch because you don't want to accidentally yaw when you give throttle. And if you think about it the throttle/yaw stick is doing 2 different functions that arent all that related to each other, so it makes sense to have 2 fingers doing those 2 tasks. And for the pitch/roll I find using my thumb to be more fluid. like all axis have the same flow to them. Kind of hard to explain.

Great vid. I also learned thumbs for trainer planes, switched to hybrid pinch for 3D Planes and Helis. That hybrid method works great to access all the switches for flying complex planes. I thought about switching to a tray style radio but that requires moving my hands off the sticks to access a switch. DX9/DX18 feels so good to Hybrid pinch. The Taranis radio that I fly doesn't feel right but for the price it has some nice features.

I’m new. I suck with thumbs. Pinching is far more accurate but it’s hard for me to do while standing. Even with a lanyard I lose some control due the radio moving when I shift my body position. Trying to hold absolutely still gets uncomfortable. I think I should just bring a folding chair and pinch with the radio in my lap. Thats the most precise way for me. I don’t know how people get good standing.

In the early CP heli days (at least here in the EU) almost all pilots were using "desk/tray style" transmitter (like a MC24 with neck strap), so it was natural to pinch...but now 15yrs later I changed over to thumbing since I got myself a DX8 and moved away from the desk style transmitters and am loving it (sure I feel like I have less precision but not that I would mind and it's definitely worth the flexibility you get) :)

I inadvertently learned to hold the controller exactly like Steele when i was first learning FPV. The way it happened was kind of dumb luck. I bought a Mode 1 Taranis because all the Mode 2 controllers were sold out. I read that it was relatively easy to change the modes by taking it apart. I got my controller, took it apart, started screwing and unscrewing springs. I finally got it to Mode 2 BUT the left stick was super sloppy. So when I started to learn to fly my ZMR250 FPV, I was trying to fly thumbs but I couldn't track straight and was accidentally yawing all over the place. So I developed that hybrid just to struggle to fly straight without accidentally applying yaw. Then I finally went back into the controller and tightened the springs properly so the sticks had proper spring tension. That improved my flying experience greatly. But I still have that hybrid pinch... and even now when I try to teach people on a Syma X5 they look at me and are like... why are your hands all over the sticks (because the controller is tiny compared to a Taranis).

Coming from a 3d heli background too I fly the "hybrid pinch" it just allowed for fine control and quick movements when required. Can't say I've seen anyone use the full pinch style personally.

Pinching would always be “superior” as far as control. Thumbs is only done because it feels natural due to video games. But pinching is almost impossible to fly without a lanyard. If you have to hold the controller then thumbs will def be the better option. So it all depends.
Neither is wrong but pinching will always gain more motion and control vs thumbs. But do what ever is comfortable and let’s you have the most fun. That’s what it’s all about, don’t forget that!

First time I picked up my taranis x9d it felt natural with the small sticks to pinch and I feel like I have more control with a pinch. When flying cheap hobby quads with big mushroom sticks I tend to use my thumbs because its easier on the bigger sticks.

Very good explanation and comparison. I noticed I tend to twitch a lot on the thumb method. I'll have to try the pinch method. Thanks :)

Thanks +Steele, nearly poked my eye out trying to fly with my face! 😜 Great episode guys, good to know even the pros get nervous at events.

Just like Steele, I learned to fly "backwards", meaning I started with collective pitch helis. I then went to multirotors, and I'm now finally learning fixed wing. Funny enough, I also instinctively hold the transmitter the same way; thumb on top, index finger wrapped around the front. I held it this way naturally, but now that I am forced to think about why, I guess it does give me much more dexterity

thanks :) sitting at my PC with my radio feeling for different postion´s, tomorrow iam going to try the hybrid-pinch, got small hands and been flying RC planes for some years only with thumbs, so now iam going to try the hybrid on my kwad :) thanks for sharing info and showing :)

Dudes, you forgot tray-radio users.. Pencil grip! (thumb, index finger and middlefinger) This comes from a background in F3A and gliders.

I do hybrid pinching on the my left hand (mode 2) for better throttle resolution, but use only my thumb on the right and leave my other fingers on the mode switches. Not sure why it's more comfortable - maybe it's because I have big hands and come from a funk bass playing background so don't have a problem with the thumb dexterity or reach (slappin da bass).
I'm looking to try the hybrid pinch on the right though now that i'm doing more acro flying these days. Just need a decent strap and that extension that Steele uses for better radio balance.

100% switched to pinch as soon as I flew manual. The amount of control you gain is insane.

Would have been great to hear Chad's take on it, as someone who is sticking with thumbs, to balance the discussion. I personally switched to pinch for the same reasons as tommy, when I started noticing Steele and Skitzo's success with pinching. Great video.

I always used pinching when flying, automatically. the last time I used thumbs was when I was 10 years old and drove my old RC car with a flight-type radio not the wheeled one.

OK, I'm nearly convinced, I'll try to pinch next time...
As a thumb flier I see one disadvantage (in my case)- as I hold the radio comfortably it's hard to reach the switches on top with other fingers, while pinching moves the hands a bit forward and keeps fingers on the switches. Not that I need them switches from take-off to landing but still... As yas talked about both, I'll give a shot at pinching:)

I will try out pinch for more micro control, problem is a old..ish dog and new tricks.
BTW Tommy, grab 2 beers and a bottle of water 30 mins before a race, than everything is going a lot more smooth :-D

How about left hand hybrid and right hand 100% thumb? I need that freedom to move in the pitch/roll and more controlled over throttle/yaw mixing. And in fast forward flight, we dont even use yaw that much anyways.

I started with CP helicopters, then got into FPV quads. I have always used thumbs and even though I tried pinching occasionally (just for the sake of it) I could never do it effectively; maybe my hands are too small for the TX; it always felt odd. So I will stick (pun) with using my thumbs, thank you very much. :)Thanks for the episode, it was fun!

This is very insightful. As a somewhat noob pilot that flies thumbs, I'll have to consider pinching under this philosophy.

I thought I was the only one to do the hybrid thumb-pinch. I used that to teach myself pinch mode. but I still go back to thumbs when I'm really needing precise control.
