Legendary Jamaican dancehall/reggae duo, Steely & Clevie recall playing together professionally as kids, appearing on classic tracks backing singers like Hugh Mundell and Gregory Isaacs.
As an umbilical link between the roots and dancehall eras, they devote much of their time keeping the old flame alive. In this talk at the 2005 RBMA in Seattle, they explain why, expanding on the magic of the old songs and how they have to remind the youth of their islands musical history. They also relive that past, with some great anecdotes about some of reggae’s most famous figures.

Legendary, these 2 have made hit after hit after hit. I was in Jamaica when their track "When" with Tiger first came out. It was incredible witnessing this brand new sound hitting the dancehall for the first time, the people were going CRAZY...

Bobby Digital Dixon who made Dem Bow from Shabba Ranks, was the producer of that song. Daddy Yankees producer heard that song and sampled it to make the very first Reggaeton songs. Hence the term Reggae-ton

To be very precise: Steely & Clevie released, in 1990, the Fishmarket Riddim. This is what most early Reggaeton recordings used to sound like. There was also The Pounder Riddim by Dennis 'The Menace' Thompson and I don't know exactly who wrote the Dem Bow Riddim. Also there was the Poco Man Jam Riddim - what was a slightly different version sounding almost like the Fishmarket Riddim.
Steely & Clevie have been one of the most likely riddim sections to be credited with laying the foundation for Reggaeton.
From 1994 onwards you'd often hear early Reggaeton tunes blasting out of Ghetto Blasters that Latinos carried around. These days the tunes sounded very ruff, the rapping by most artistes was not of a high level and it could be annoying after a while hearing that.
So: While in the nineties Jamaica created about four new riddims per week, the latin reggae world spent more than 24 years vibing on the same kinda thing - mainly the Fishmarket, Bam Bam, Dem Bow riddims. (#.=)
Since about 2016 the former reggaeton rappers focus mainly on singing and they have learned that art very well. So right now, Reggaeton music has matured massively and some tunes are sounding excellent and real nice.

As a hardcore Reggae and Dancehall fan, In no way has that music "matured" and "sound excellent" partner. That Reggaeton bullshit is garbage period. I could give to fu#$s, on how many views on TH-cam it gets and $$$ales. You must be either a young cat or just somebody with an effed up ear in music.

This is nice heen searching for their interview which is long and has alot about them This is it, but i dont get why you cut all their audio presentations. Those were so good as picturates of the events they were stating and you remove those. I dont know why you came to that decision. I would really love if you re-post one without those cuts. Please do. Thank you for this. iT has enriched me in my pursuit for been a great sound and acoustic engineer.

The interviewer is obviously somewhat knowledgeable about reggae but not enough so to be interviewing these two forces of nature. Pure cringe worthy questions you can see them navigating through. When he asks them to break down every musical form since mento (something done in a Bob Marley documentary we have all seen and clearly where he got the idea to waste these people's time with such a pointless question) I about turned the interview off.
