This just sums up my childhood growing up... Nostalgic... The best era of illuminations and so many more back then.

This video is like an out of body experience. I watched the VHS of this endlessly as a child.

So did I! I kept the VHS and when I recently got the opportunity I converted it. Glad I wasn't the only one

I absolutely use to love watching Blackpool videos as a kid too! Use to have so many VHS tapes that my grandparents gave to me when I was little of the illuminations and the pleasure beach 🥰

Back when it was a Holiday Town and worth a visit, good times, not a perfect world back then, but simpler!
Still remember visiting that year, September weekend 27th 28th and some of 29th

I wondered if my childhood perspective of the illuminations was overinflated, but watching this confirms that the were magical, vast and tapped into many of the cartoon characters I loved... ninja turtles, postman pat, thomas etc. And all the weird alice in wonderland type characters. I loved visiting in those days and wondered if I could recreate that magic. I watched a video for this years... it was super underwhelming. Where did all the investment go... I guess the town may struggle these days, which is a huge shame.

Sadly the illuminations in Blackpool started to go down hill when Morecambe got rid of theirs.

Now these are the illuminations that should still be around today. So much variety, different colours and flashing lights.
It's a shame that the illuminations in Blackpool today are not what they used to be as they have less variety, colour and are just plain boring.

I ran new features and maintenance in those days, we used to typically make 3 roadsections ( each 24 poles long ( pairs)) and 3 large tableaux...it was a challenge and we sometimes missed deadlines but the department was very proud of its work which was innovative creative and often groundbreaking technically..

Blackpool in 1991 with Derek Jameson and Judith Chalmers switching on the illuminations. The Big Dipper on the Pleasure Beach before the Pepsi Big One was built, but sadly the famous Fun House was destroyed by fire just before Christmas.

Man this some nostalgia right here! That mummy popping out of his sarcophagus used to scare the hell out of me as a kid! It's still there but they took the mummy out years ago. I wish they still had a lot of these still showing. A lot of the ones hung up above the road either got nicked from the depot they were stored at or they were lost in a fire, I can't remember which. Not sure about the ones on the prom though, shame they don't put stuff like the Lego display out any more.

just watched someone do a bike ride through the 2023 lights and I was going this weekend for the switch on... was.... not a patch on the old lights, the total lack of imagination in the design and the soul-less cold colours of the leds just make it so so poor compared to the 70's to early 90's
