- A playthrough of "Wily Tower" as it appears in Capcom's 1994 compilation title for the Sega Genesis, Mega Man: The Wily Wars.
This recording is of RetroBit's re-release of the US NTSC version of the game.
The Wily Wars was a compilation of the first three Megaman NES games, all remade with a new 16-bit facelift. But, apparently not content to provide a mere collection of three of the best NES games ever made with fully updated graphics and sound, Capcom had one final, awesome addition for the fans: a brand new Sega Genesis-exclusive game, Wily Tower, that could be unlocked by completing Mega Mans 1, 2, and 3.
So how well does this generous bit of fan-service compare to the remakes?
Quite well, actually, even going so far as to throw a couple interesting twists of its own into the series' formula.
You don't win any weapons or items from beating the bosses in Wily Tower. Instead, at the beginning of each stage you are asked to customize your loadout of eight weapons and three items, and your choices include every power that can be won from the bosses in MM1-3.
There are only three robot masters and seven stages to tackle, but the game is roughly the same length as the first Mega Man.
The stages have more enemies and hazards than you'll find in the NES games, but the game is much easier overall. The weapons buffet is a great idea - it ups the potential replay value and it's fun to experiment with different weapon combos - but it totally trivializes the challenge. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though. It certainly didn't stop me from enjoying it.
The new enemy designs fit in nicely with the classic crew, and the inspired choice to base the new robot masters on characters from Journey to the West makes Wily Tower feel like a "real game" with its own identity instead of a cheap and soulless asset flip. So does the excellent new music.
Wily Tower shouldn't be missed by anyone that enjoyed the 8-bit Mega Man games. It feels like a lost title in the original series, and its quality far exceeds what you'd expect from a unlockable bonus in a compilation title.
It's hard to imagine the Capcom of today going this far above and beyond to please their fans. I mean, why give away what you could sell as a $20 piece of DLC?

The ability to bring in a number of weapons from all three games is beyond cool. This was a nice finale to an already-fun package.
Wily Tower is an excellent Mega Man game that would be able to stand just fine on its own. Pretty amazing for a bonus feature on a compilation cart, huh?
Wily Tower is a good game, but kinda does a weird job of standing out without the other 3 remakes. You can’t have Tower without the other 3 because they teach you the weapons of where they come from.
I do love the music here, they play to the Genesis more by being original pieces than try to be the original mega man music, and it’s fantastic.
The music in this is awesome. I like Mega Water’s theme the most and the catchy Light Lab tune. Thanks for this video because I had never seen this game/bonus feature before. I’m still learning new stuff all the time about the Mega Man series almost four decades after playing the first one.

Has anyone tried to do an NES Demake of the Wily Tower?
Basically you just always bring along Crash Bomber, Hard Knuckle, Thunder Beam and Rush Jet.
To this day, still the only reproduction cartridge I own (with box of course), my friend and I had had someone make us each one many years ago. The guy no longer does repro carts sadly, as the one he did for both of us, was pretty high quality.
I feel like one day Wily read the 1592 Chinese Novel - Saiyūki, got to the part in Chapter 6 where Son Gokū fights Jirō Shin in a battle of 72 Changes & then was like, "I've Got It! I know just the group of Robots that will destroy Rockman once for all!" and thus The Genesis Unit was born!
Though, he clearly didn't read enough since both Mega Water S & Hyper Storm H neither possess a Subdue-Yō Staff or a Nine-Teeth Spike-Rake, with only Buster Rod G having his signature weapon, the Comply Gold-Hoop Rod. Classic Wily...
Mega Water’s head looks like a pineapple with a sunny-side up egg on top of it.
It's a kappa thing since he and the others are based on characters from "Journey to the West".
In the Original 1592 Xiyouji Novel, Sha Wujing (Japanese: Sa Gojō) wasn't a Kappa! He was described to be a 12ft Tall, Red-Haired, Dark-Indigo Sand-Monster (implied to be or at least resemble a Yaksa / Rakshasa) with Razor-Sharp Teeth! He wore a Necklace with Nine Skulls, a Light-Yellow Robe with 2 Strands of White Reeds tied around his waist & wielded a Wooden Stick Weapon covered in Pearly Threads with a Golden Hub called, "Subdue-Yao, Precious-Staff"! And just like Zhu Bajie & Sun Wukong, Sha Wujing was also tonsured after joining Tang Sanzang on the Journey to the India...
Him being depicted as a Kappa is an odd Japanese trope that stared somewhere during the Early 20th Century (prior to that, he was depicted as an Ugly, Bald Humanoid Ogre, such as 1864's Tsūzoku Saiyūki) & was popularized in Japan thanks to Nippon TV's Saiyūki (1978)!
And most people don't see it but it's literally Megaman vs. Saiyuki

Ha! I see multiple Metroid on a Sega Genesis! 21:30-21:46. What is really neat is they are not some small easter egg. They are full size enemies and there is more than one.
Addendum- This is not the first time a Metroid can be seen on a Sega console. The very first game to ever feature a Metroid in it was R-Type for the Master System. The arcade original has Metroid in it as well. I wonder if the TG-16 port of R-Type has a few Metroid in it as well? :)

The music for Wily Tower is so catchy! My favorites are Wily Tower Stage 2, Wily Tower Stage 3 and Wily Tower Stage 4. What is your favorite, NintendoComplete?
They're all good, but Wily 4 is my favorite. That's why I did the little dance at the beginning of the stage.
