First Time Riding The New Dirt Jumper At A Skatepark!

  • first time riding the new dirt jumper at the skatepark and trying to do technical BMX style tricks including 360 to fake and 540 airs! The bike is a lot different than a BMX bike but it has many positive take aways. This bike was not designed to ride these small tight ramps but Matty makes it look easy (sometimes)!

Having ridden dirt jumps bikes my whole life, I believe most of the challenge Matty has is because of the Fireball's "extremely" long chainstay measurement compared to other Dirt Jump bikes. It measures at 415mm, when most Dirt jumpers are in the 385-400mm range. So the chainstay length is basically an inch longer than a standard dirt jump bike. Matty's difficulty isn't because of the wheelbase, it is because of the chainstay length. Most dirt jump bikes are much easier to 180 and 360 because of the shorter chainstay. Imagine doing a 180 on a bmx bike with a full inch longer chainstay, its the same issue on the MTB.

Nice of you to take all this data. Im also and old street mtb rider with a Blackmarket riot. I was wondering this because Matty shouldnt have so much problem pulling the manuals. Also add some higher bars could help on that. My flat 360s always have the same problem that hes having.. I throw down the rear wheel so much sooner

Speaking of Pilgs, he actually put pegs on one of his old NS bikes a while back. He’s not a bmx guy, so his tricks were a little limited. But we all know Pilgs can shred a skatepark. Tom Cardy is another rider who does well in pump tracks and skateparks.

as someone who grow up riding dirt jumpers but is also a fan of bmx this is so awesome!!!!!!!! they are hard to find now cuz its kinda a old school dirt jumper thing but try finding some 24inch rims and tires that used to be a popular chouse for street dirt jump riders you also could find ridge forks like bmx forks but for dirt jumpers then that woud really turn your dirt jumper into a street jumper

Some tips for Matty on a dirt jumper: first off, pump the tires WAY up. Even though it's a mountainbike you should see it as a big bmx. I'd say at least 3 bars in each is what you need. For the rest, keep the front suspension very very firm. Like WAY over the manufacturers guide. It need to be stiff and responsive.

the rotation of the wheels has a bit more gyroscopic force plus the extra weight so if you do a spin or tail whip, you can pull the brake and it comes around a little easier.

3:40 - The reason you're landing back heavy is because you don't have the front fork locked out like it should be for "tech" riding on a dirt jumper.... Try locking the fork and see how that changes the bike. 😁

I have a feeling Scotty might end up on a dirt jumper as well, he has been riding a few different bikes lately and a dirt jumper is a lot of fun. At first with my bikes it felt weird jumping from bike to bike but now I swap from each one easily. It's fun to try the same route on the different bikes because of their different characteristics. Matty, I think will love having the choice of bikes to ride.

Especially now atleast at the Crankworx level, slopestyle courses changed ALOT recently. 3 out the 4 diamond series events had all sorts of BMX inspired features (dirt half-pipes, satellite dishes, all sorts of things). Innsbruck is still just a line of huge DJ jumps. But Whistler, Cairns, and Rotorua were all very unconventional / BMX inspired this year. Also urban events like District Ride are inherently very BMX inspired

hey Scott, I'm at a loss for words. around 2011 i picked up BMX and progressed slowly - riding a lot of street and park stuff locally slowly getting really good, I fell in love with a lot of creators and what I considered my idols in BMX and took it as inspiration to ride and get better. entering high school around 2016. I vividly remember attending a youth program for some shenanigans I pulled and got in trouble for and while riding in my parents car on the way to this I remember pulling up TH-cam for the car ride and seeing the video of your accident. I was heartbreaking and went to show anything can happen at anytime and I was saddened that one of my hero's probably wont be on a bike again. fast forward present time, randomly opened a yt tab and saw this as the first recommended! I can not believe the mountain of obstacles you've overcome in this recovery journey and the fact that your almost 100% yourself! congrats on the channels success and the success of your accomplishments along the way of your recovery and i hope for more goals to be crushed in the future. i no longer ride as i dont have the time with life things atm but i still am always interested to see what you guys are up to. where'd Stevie Churchill disappear to? xoxo - un11
