    Damn! That gap pisses me off. All it takes is one mistake. Reminds me of when I paid a shop to redo my front suspension. They installed a new wishbone upside down and I never realized it until a few years after when a shop put new tires on and couldn't get perfect alignment on the front. I hope you establish a homestead sometime soon. It's nice to have your own shop and know that your repairs are being done right.

    Jasper you say!!!? As a retired automotive tech and business owner I have had exactly two experiences with that company. Both were worse than bad!!! On one occasion we installed a reman motor in a Nissan PU. It developed a massive oil leak at the front cover. They requested that I pull the cover and inspect. Turned out there was a large nick in the block face and they has epoxied it as a fix. Took photos and had their man come out an inspect it. They denied the claim because they said that they would never use epoxy to fix a block. I appealed and after some time forced them to pay. That was the last time I ever used that company. Glad that you are on the road again. Here's hoping that we do not have a part 4 to this story.

    Just wanted to say that the rear end was going when you purchased the van. But most people ignore basic maintenance especially the transmission and never change the gallon of gear oil in the rear end, also the dont put additional transmission cooler and overheat the transmission!! Also the power steering is never changed!! A bad rearend will shorten the life of a transmission!! Antifreeze is a must to keep fresh. I'm guessing 15,000 in repairs

Older rigs have swagger and a cool factor that newer don't. I don't want to know how I have spent on my VW buses over the years cause it doesn't matter to me...I like them. I just started building a truck camper that is better suited for offroad adventures, and I could have probably got a slide in camper a lot cheaper, but the cababities of the rig would have beed afftered. You fared better than we did. While pulling a small pass from Brookings Oregon to Gold Beach we tore up our Ford transmission. My choices were Jasper, TRC out of Kent Washington or a three week wait for Ford. TRC was a little higher than Jasper. I went with the TRC unit. Gold Beach was a nice ten day stay. The transmission worked for 75 miles. TRC allows 50 dollar an hour labor rate unless I could get the truck to Kent Washington. I got it there on a nail biting drive. We spent two weeks waiting for them to rebuild our unit They refused to cover car rental or park rental for those two weeks. The never called back, In retrospect I should have waited for the Ford unit.

    Looks like someone forgot to tighten the u-bolts when they installed the new rear axle.... I also suspect having a rear differential with no oil, and pieces grinding metal to metal which creates extra load on the entire drivetrain helped cause the last two transmission failures. Without a crystal ball, we'll never know for sure. With all the extra "drag" in the rear differential, it certainly didn't help the transmission. Even you said it felt like it had extra pep when you picked it up from the repair shop. That "extra pep" is the amount of "drag" (or load) the bad rear axle was consuming just to operate normally under metal to metal conditions. The good news is the van should all set to go now for the foreseeable future!

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The van still coasted fine and the rear wheels were turning. I don't think that had anything to do with the transmission failure. I did have oil in the diff the past 20k miles. I do believe in their hurry to finish the job at AA someone neglected to do the alignment before tightening it down.

    Question: Since it sounds like this issue had been going on for awhile, would it have been better to have it inspected/fixed from the beginning when you first heard the sound? If so, would it have been cheaper?
    Also, you mentioned your van is 25 years old. RV Trader has a 1996 Roadtrek 190 listed for about $20,000, so maybe the repair is worth it.

    How can you recommend Best Buy Transmission when it took them 3 or 4 times to get it right the first time and it only lasted 16 months and 7000 miles

  • @kele1264
    @kele1264 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How could they make a mistake like that on the rear end?! How could they possibly let it out of the shop that way? All things considered (past history, your past experience, your expertise, your TH-cam...), how could they, including the owner, not go over their work like their lives depended on it? If they let things leave the shop in a hurry to save time (although the real problem was sloppy work), it will cost them even more time, and maybe money, when it comes back in, possibly in worse shape. That's the kind of thing that gives me the agita that never quits, even after the problem is "corrected". I'm glad that now that it's wrapped up, you feel that Best Buy was great and the shop wasn't too bad. I remember watching the first time around; I swear I had sympathy pains for you. As for a guess as to how much maintenance and repairs have cost you from that point, my wild guess would be $15-$20K. Split the diff, $17.5K. Hoping for you that nothing but normal wear and tear happens from now on.

    • @HOBOTECH

    Hello Professor
    Happy to see it's fixed. Hope that used rear end lasts.
    Wouldn't a new Ring & pinion gear, new bearings & seals, fix rear end. Why replace the housing. If axle bearings were so shot, If Axles wouldn't come out, the seals would have failed, leaking oil .Seems strange , he suggested buying a used unit, That's a heavy duty axle housing. I think u were stroaked on rear end. Either way. Glad your back on the road. Hello Heidi. Camp safe

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They said the housing itself took damage. I believe it was the carrier or pinion bearings that failed, but once you have that much metal and overheating you replace the housing too..

Okay, I think I understood correctly: we are to guess how much it's cost you to operate and maintain the Roadtrek since you've purchased it. I'm going to guess total cost for those items at $19,780.
