How to Make Your Own Sunset | Cinematic Lighting

- This video will teach you how to FAKE beautiful cinematic sunset lighting, and do so on a budget! With a simple small lighting setup, it is super easy to achieve a look of sunset even in the dark of night!
Lights I used were Aputure 120dii and some Aputure LS Mini 20's.
I also used a 5in1 diffuser reflector. All of these can be replaced with cheaper budget alternatives like work lights from hardware stores and sheets for diffusion and bounce. Do what you can with what you have!

I love that I get this often
Brady Bessette But unlike the real Nickelback singer, your videos are really good and informative.

Great way of explaining! Sub + Bell!!
So kind!!! Thank you
I haven’t checked out any of your other videos yet, but if they’re anything like this, I’m glad I found your channel!
I’m obsessed with lights and lighting too (as you can see by the million light reviews on my channel), but I have focused more so on the technical aspects of light up to this point.
I’d love to do more tutorials like this, so this was a great inspiration for me 👍
Hey thank you so so much !!
your mind is crazy cool! love seeing you share your gifts with others! you’re so inspiring and i am proud to know you!! love you babe! ❤️
Thank you hunny ❤️
Could you link that halloween Haze maschine down somewhere please?😅
OH BOY, I need to find what one, I got this one from a friend
hahaha jk i love being your model
Wow!!! Amazing! Great stuff here
Thank you so much!!
So if you have a simple fog machine you can use it like an expensive hazer? Can you get very similar result with some swing? :D
Not a perfect look but better that than nothing!
@@BradyBessette to me look like same. Maybe the time can be an issue because need often push again to the air manually, but for budget shots i think it will be my solution to. Hazers to expensive yet now for me. Thank you for answer.
Great tutorial! BTW what did you set your white balance to in camera ?
oh boy it's been a little while. I want to say 5500 range! sorry!
I'd love to see how you would light a close up of someone holding a small object like a coin! Thanks for all the videos!
This was an awesome tutorial. Shooting at sundown is challenging for sure (we do it for live music) so I think borrowing some of your strategies here to help supplement that light will give us a good combo of a perfectly natural look and a wider window of film time (along with a more consistent look throughout).
Love the DIY approach my dude.
Thank you a ton! I’d love if you tagged me in the next project you do this style with so I can see!
this stuff shouldn't be for free man....... So glad that I came across this channel. So helpful :)
Tips are always appreciated 🤣 thank you subham!
next could you show us volumetric lighting/shafts of lights with 120d
Can you clarify a bit more? I wanna always be able to deliver exactly what you want !
shafts of lights , light rays coming through the window
debasish naiding yeah that sounds fun!!!
Looks great!
Thanks Alex!
I'd love in your videos if you could explain what you set your camera white balance too and how that correlates to the kelvin temperature of your lights.
I can thank you! sorry for this!
i paid for my film school. here i get everything for free. Thank you so much
Did ya shoot it in a log profile...do i need to color grade it in editing...???...or the lighting was enough for the shot?
I did shoot in a LOG profile so I did color it to get the look. Lighting was enough though!
It's so cool seeing this video....i need more to know how trick convert day-light
practice makes perfect!
The haze is a big plus man
oh yes!!
nice bro, why not light up the candles for atmosphere, light and moving shadows ? :)
cool idea, I didnt think of it at the time!
Great video! Pro-Mist for the win!
Heck yeah! Makes me want the 1/4 and 1/2 for some extra dreamy things!
@@BradyBessette For sure! I really love using my 1/2 BPM on my GH5, paired with some film emulation in post and you can get a really awesome surreal look. Two weeks ago I went camping with my friends and decided to film a little bit, I used the 1/2 BPM and it gave the video a really awesome surreal vibe (and took a bit off the digital feel of my GH5). If you're any interested you can check it out here- th-cam.com/video/gDt3xL-eVE0/w-d-xo.html
ido Simchoni on it now!

Thank you kindly
Great explanations and results.
Thank you a lot! Hope they help. Lmk any other videos you’d like!
@@BradyBessette I'd love to see more of these scene break-downs! Some experiments, perhaps. Thank you
@MARZACpro I love doing them, any specific ones you’d like?
I wonder how the whole scene and mood would have been if you had lit the candles...
That’s a good question, I wonder too
Since this is supposed to be a morning or sunset scene, it wouldn't be practical to have candles on
@@njugunawainaina Well it's a sunset replica. And I don't see anything impractical about having the candles on when the 'sun' is going down.
While I can't be emphatic here, I still feel it would have enhanced the overall mood and vibe of the shot. Obviously not in any outstanding way. But, yeah, it is what it is.
Very nice 👍👍👍, thanks for video
Thank you thank you for watching!
when these are the only lights thet where used in this setup, why you don`t change your whitebalance
good idea, but wanted to show the flexibility with gels
Well done. I've decided to pay attention to you
thank you and welcome!
Putting the viewer in the frame itself, that’s what it’s all about! Love the knowledge🥳
Thank you for the support Yas!
Here from Reddit, what a great video bro

@@BradyBessette for sure bro! I'll be sure to keep up here and just followed your IG as well. if you are ever in Denver, let me know.
Guess now I’ve got a reason to be!
Quick question : Doesn't Haze cause fire alarm to go off cauee i am always afraid to use it indoor. Please reply. By the way great job 💥
It can, when able to with permission I will remove or cover smoke detectors, otherwise I steer clear to avoid liability issues!!
@@BradyBessette Thanks for replying 🙏
It's very usefull thanks...
Thank YOU
Good job, bro! Enjoy your channel.
Thank you!!
what smoke machine did you use?
One of the party store Halloween ones! Lol not the best but it works!
Love this breakdown! Super helpful. Added a 1/4 BPM to my bag this year, never leaves my lens now!
Isn’t it amazing how something so small does so much
@@BradyBessette it's amazing!
Hope it's not a 1.8 but 1/8th ProMist filter your talking about :-) at 00:46
YOURE RIGHT I NEVER NOTICED. Got it confused I am sorry

wowie wow your model is gorgeous
She really is isn’t she ?! My jaw 😱
thx......as usual, very good tutorial........i've learn alot from your channel.........
Thank you very much!!
Love this video! I definitively subscribe to your channel! Just a question about LSmini20, are them usable also in outdoors portrait photography?
Thanks for the well done breakdown!
Just one question: Did you happen to use this setup(s) on actual projects? I mean, yes, you did very well with the shot, but how would it hold if she'd stand up and walk to the (camera) right? Would you be able to pan with her? And how about the skedule? What if you were forced to shoot this scene over a longer periode of time - let's say from noon till midnight - any ideas on how you'd approach lighting when the sun's position and intensity change? Just curious.
Great questions, all shoots are different and deserve a different approach to the setup according to the shots. I would use this setup in an actual project but would change lighting for different shots whether they're mid tight or more wide.
Great video and good book that your gf is pretending to read in this breakdown lol. I randomly found that book last year and read it in like a day, was surprisingly really good. Keep up the good work
Hahahaha really!! Thank you lol
@@BradyBessette Yeah you should give it a read honestly. Its kinda crazy all the situations that the author goes through, its very inspirational. Plus theres a part where he meets Steven Speilberg and its pretty funny and cool. I'll bet you'll appreciate it, From one filmmaker to another, you know what its like.
Keep up the great work and lightning. Your lighting is very impressive and practical which i think helps a lot of the newer filmmakers out there. I remember when i first started lighting a decade ago and tried to find videos online. It was pretty difficult and most videos over the last decade dont really show very realistic/practical situations. Most new filmmakers DO NOT have amazing expensive lights/gear or an actual location that's meant for lighting lol. Nothing is more annoying than watching people who have all top notch equipment, perfect locations and yet still dont properly explain or breakdown what theyre doing. Cant tell you how many videos ive seen like that over the years in which i gained nothing of value or knowledge from...lol.
You're doing a good thing for people here and the results are showing. You're definitely earning your rapid growth of subscribers. Cheers!
Soooo Fire, your lighting is getting so good bro I gotta catch up 😳
Catch uppppppp. Thank you
Maybe it's just me but I'll light those candles to add a little bit practical lighting to the shot
You read my mind. But I decided to keep the focus toward the sunlight
Man this looks awesome with the sound effects, great breakdown and really easy to follow!
Thank you!!
Oh my, I wished I stumbled across your videos sooner. Rushing to buy those Rosco filters, and some more lights, I hope to get them in time.
Thanks for your videos, they have greatly improved my understanding of lighting.
here from reddit... great work! extremely useful stuff here, so thanks for taking the time to make this.
Ah thank you so much Nick, please suggest more video ideas!
nice videos , just subbed
Awesome thank you!
Nice. The fan placement was a little weird. For a while I thought you accidentally left a fan blowing up into the corner or that there was some heat blowing from an air register. Maybe redirecting the air horizontally with a piece of cardboard would help ruffle the sheers more naturally.
What a great tutorial, I don't have any of these lights and setups even don`t have a good camera but watched till the end while enjoying every second. love the way you explain everything in detail. Love from Pakistan 😍🇵🇰
Nice Video Bro, I have been checking your videos recently and its really fun to know these kind of techniques, really appreciate your stuff.
It would be very helpful if u let us know the cheaper version of the lights you use or any DIY lighting set up that you would recommend. A big Thanks from India.
Glad you like them! and thank you for the CC, definitely something to consider!
I love this type of content. You're amazing!. I'm a new italian subscriber and unfortunately I can't follow every single word but I catch the sense. Could you suggest me some books about creative use of lights settings?
Welcome aboard and thank you! I do not know of any books as of now, the internet is a huge resource
Can you please give some no budget cinematic lighting hacks please
sounds like a fun video!!! thank you!
@@BradyBessette waiting for the video man..🙏
What color temp was your camera set to?
I think it was maybe 5500k range.
Very inspiring. Thanks
Thank YOU!
Love these tutorials and the colors that you get!!! Keep it up Brady!! 💪🏼
Thank you David! Glad you’re loving it!!
Wow... love this.🙌
Thank you!!
you are a beast. awesome!!!

What would the purpose be of using haze rather than a promise 1/8 or 1/4?
I like your vids a lot.
thank you Benjamin
Bravo!!
Thank you!!
@@BradyBessette everything you explain on your vídeos, helps a lot!!
Beautiful! what colour tempererature did you use in the camera?
what iso where you at.?
400! The native iso
Promist one eighth, promist 1.8 isn’t a thing.
Correction^! Sorry , mistake
Brady Bessette word, solid videos.
Wow! Great work man! What was your white balance in the camera?
i love your cinematic style Brady!!! i think the most important thing in a video is the light, not quality of the camera, so i can only appreciate all your efforts to show us the real setup for scenes!! nice job
Thank you so very much, glad you enjoyed!
I'm so happy that i found you and my film journey is going to be beautiful. Thanks a lot❤️
Thank you very much
Beautiful
thank you. cheers!
Great Job man
Awesome video again! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I've had experiences where my Aputure would warp or deform the CTO gel. Just wondering if you had any experience with this! Do you just keep the power lower??
I did not on this particular shoot, but definitely have had that on other shoots with LED’s. So be wary of that!
working gaffer here, i dont even know how i got here but heres some feedback:
points for keeping it fairly simple and the fan idea!
if you were going for a soft look then you could have done better, the hard noseshadow kinda destroys that, my tipp:
change the direction of your sunlight so its coming more from behind her or from the side, its okay if it hits her face, just make sure that youre not getting that nose shadow, if you have to fill in the face, do it from camera right, that way, youre not loosing all the contrast. the fill you added is way too much for my taste, we are not shooting on film anymore, fuck the fill ;) , added benefit: the wall behind her wouldt catch that much light and she would stand out alot more, giving you the "depth" you are looking for.
Also, even if youre changing the angle of the light, its still a really harsh source to kick into someones face, if you dont have diffusion frames, just tape some kind of light diffusion material to the outside of the window so only she is covered, that way you keep the hard quality of the light on the set, while still getting a much more pleasing light for her face.
another point for depth:
right now this frame is just of wash of orange, if you want to avoid that, a bit of daylight (asuming your balanced to daylight) would help, for example using a very soft daylight bounce as your fill, simulating the blue sky at golden hour coming through windows outside of frame.
this is important because the viewers eyes get used to the color fairly quickly, so after a minute it will have lost all of its impact, if you give the eye a point of reference, the orange will continue to look highly saturated.
i went back to the start and honestly, the shot without any haze and fill just looks better. you were trying to make it look softer but made it look flat in the process.
your camera has range, use it.
or give the image back some contrast in grading (but then the shadows in her face will look the same again then).
sorry for long confusing sentences and bad english, one is because english isnt my first language, the other because my brain is kind of fried right now.
You are true in your points. The haze doesn't give "soft image", but remove contrast which makes, as you said, the image flat.
Unless there are clouds in the sky, the sunset is always harsh on your face because the sunlight beams hit you by being very low.
amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Can't get enough of these lighting tutorials, keep these coming! Loved the clear and concise explanations, congratulations!
Thank you kindly!! I will!

oh boy maybe one day!
this was amazing.. i just subbed you
That’s so kind. It made my evening better thank you !
Very enjoyable presentation of this lighting setup with great detail on your goals and how you achieved them. Once the frame is established, it might be a nice time to introduce another related aspect, how the constraints of your frame influence the light levels to be provided by your lights (e.g. to get the optical effect I want, I need to shoot with this aperture/ISO/shutter, and so the key needs to be at f/2.8). Just an idea. Thanks for the effort you put into creating these videos!
Thank you for the insight Richard!
@@BradyBessette yeah, please share your settings next time! Then your videos would be better than perfect
